Seeing Eastern Canada Behind the Wheel of a Porsche

In my wildest dreams I couldn’t think of a better way to see Eastern Canada than sitting behind the wheel of one of the finest cars ever built.

Luckily, every now and then, our dreams come true and recently I got the chance to sit behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S for the first two stops of the Porsche Canada 150 tour.

The tour made nine stops in Eastern Canada, starting in Toronto, and ending in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The idea behind the tour was to see some of the places that make Eastern Canada one of the most picturesque places in the world and to show off some Canadian pride during the year Canada turned 150.

Each morning, two people would climb into the Carrera and drive to the next adventure for the night. Along the way there were stops for driver changeovers, lunch and an event to show what the region has to offer.

While in Kingston, the tour drivers took a three-hour boat cruise in the 1,000 Islands.

During the stop in Ottawa, a walking tour with a very knowledgeable Ottawa University law student, gave the drivers some insight into Canada’s history. Other stops along the tour included Montreal, Quebec City, New Brunswick, Prince Edward County and finally Halifax.

On this tour was a couple from Australia who had wanted to see Canada and had done other Porsche tours in different parts of the world, including one recently in Scotland, a couple from Winnipeg, a woman from outside London, Ontario and a man from China who had recently moved to Seattle.

They were all Porsche enthusiasts, eager to get behind the wheel.



I only had two days with the Carrera but to say I enjoyed the ride would be an understatement.

This was one of the best-looking, best-handling cars I have ever had the luck to drive.

Unfortunately Hwy. 401 between Toronto and Kingston didn’t offer the greatest opportunity to see how the car drives. I did get the chance to put my foot down on the accelerator as we drove on Hwy. 7 to Ottawa, including using the push to pass button.

Hit that button in the middle of the drive mode selector and the transmission is dropped into the lowest gear, the engine revs and the turbo kicks in.

It lasts for 20 seconds or until you push the button again.

It made getting around slower moving vehicles a breeze. The first time I used it I thought the front end of the car was going to lift up.

It didn’t but I did hold the steering wheel a little tighter to keep the car on the road.

During my two days I had about two hours behind the wheel, enough time to show me why Porsche drivers are so loyal to the brand.
