Visit these Canadian Drive In Theatres while you still can

Who doesn’t love movies under the stars? Perhaps you recall the scene in Grease with Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta in their red convertible at the drive in? Drive In theatres were most popular in the 1950’s and a great family adventure. The very first drive in movie theatre opened in 1933 in New Jersey. Although so many of these old theatres have since closed down, some retro theatres still exist in Canada. So grab your favourite lawn chair and blanket and pack up the car for a road trip to one of these great destinations. Just don’t expect anyone on roller skates to show up at your car window with food like they do in the movies.

The 5 Drive In Theatre - Oakville, Ontario 

Dogs love road trips, so why not take your dog to a drive in movie? All dogs are welcome at The 5 Drive In Theatre in Oakville. There are three big screens to choose from and they also have a volleyball field if you feel like playing before the movie. There are three screens to choose from, the largest being about the size of an IMAX screen.

They only take cash but there is an ATM on site. They are located at 2332 Ninth Line in Oakville, just north of the QEW.

Sussex Drive-In - Sussex, New Brunswick

Sussex Drive In at Town and Country Campground is the only drive in movie theatre in southern New Brunswick. It’s the perfect road trip voyage for warmer weather if you want to combine camping with the movies. They open on the long weekend in May and stay open until September. On long weekends it’s good for hours of entertainment when they present triple bills on their new digital screens. If you get the munchies there is a fully stocked canteen. They are located between Moncton and Saint John at 133 Aiton Road in Sussex, New Brunswick.

Saint Eustache Drive In - Saint Eustache, Quebec

This huge Drive In has five screens and is one of the biggest in Canada. Their movies start at dusk and every Thursday they have a different double feature in English, the others are in French. They are open from the end of April to the middle of September, and suggest calling first in case of bad weather. Kids 12 and under are free and there is also a restaurant and arcade on site. They are located 20 minutes from Montreal at 455 Mathers Avenue in Saint Eustache, Quebec.

Brackley Drive In Theatre - Brackley Beach, Prince Edward Island 

The Brackley Drive-in Theatre is Prince Edward Island’s only drive in and is one of the few remaining in the Maritime Provinces. It has been fully restored and has a cool 1950’s theme complete with a jukebox, Cocoa-Cola machine, and a 1950’s Morris Minor. Even the little ones will be able to see the screen, as it’s over 5 stories high and 72 feet wide. There is also a canteen and snack bar. If your road trip involves an RV there is parking available in the last row. They will re-open for the season in May 2016. Starlight Drive-In - Enderby, British Columbia

According to their website, the Starlight Drive In has the largest screen in North America at 6000 square feet, 15 feet off the ground, and 50 feet high! They have a snack bar including fresh popcorn to munch on during the movie. You can bring lawn chairs and blankets and set them up in front of your vehicle, and you can even bring a doggie bed for your dog, since dogs are allowed to watch the movie too. They will be open for the season on May 6^th . Starlight Drive-In is located at 5341 Highway 97A, just south of Enderby; it’s 75 Minutes from Kamloops and 20 Minutes from Salmon Arm.

Sunset Barrie - Barrie, Ontario 

Formerly known as the Barrie Triple Drive-in, it’s now called Sunset Barrie and under new management. This family oriented drive in is a great road trip and located east of Barrie in Guthrie, off Highway 11. Not only do they also welcome dogs, there are even K9 Refreshments provided by Woof’n Park! Their outdoor retro movie theatre also has a playground for kids. Speaking of retro, the Sunset Barrie still plays O’ Canada before the movie starts as well as old cartoons! They are located at 134 Line 4 South, near Oro-Medonte/Guthrie.

Twilight Drive-In - Langley, British Columbia

The Twilight Drive in is open seven nights a week starting March 24^th, just in time for a spring road trip through British Columbia. Once you pay your admission ticket you are welcome to stay for as many movies as you want that night. Drinks and snacks can be purchased at the concession stand – they even have sno-cones! The Twilight drive in is located at 260^th Street and Fraser Highway in Langley. The Trans Canada highway 1 Eastbound from Vancouver will get you there, check their website for specific driving directions.
