Canadian Toyota Kids Design Contest Finalist

Toyota has announced that 11-year-old Claire Kim from Alberta is the only Canadian finalist in the company's annual Dream Car Art Contest which invites kids from around the world to design a car they think makes the world a better place. Toyota received just shy of 800,000 entries this year from 90 countries. Kim's drawing was designed to "create a safe space of joy for families and kids to shield them from the negativities living outside of it". Toyota awards each finalist a cash prize and they are now eligible for the global grand prize. “The vision, creativity and innovation presented in the design ideas of Canadian children and youth is truly impressive. With the reoccurring themes of peace, environmental sustainability, and happiness, it’s clear to see that these are the leaders of tomorrow,” said Larry Hutchinson, President and CEO, Toyota Canada.

2024 Volvo EX30 From $53,700

Volvo's EX30 compact crossover made its Canadian debut last week in Montreal. The company's first dedicated small EV will start from $53,700 when it arrives in Canada, and the single motor extended range RWD model will offer up to 442 km between charges. A Twin Motor Performance variant makes 422 hp and hits 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds making it the fastest Volvo car ever. Volvo has also greatly reduced the EX30's total carbon footprint. If it is driven to 200,000 km, it will have a total carbon footprint of just 30 tons, 25 percent less than the brand's own C40 and XC40 EVs. Expect it at dealers later this year.

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQB Facelift

Mercedes-Benz is giving the EQB electric crossover a facelift. The compact three-row EV gets a new nose and new taillights, as well as new wheel designs outside. On the inside, the EQB gets a new steering wheel with touch buttons and a new centre console that drops the old wrist wrest. The latest MBUX infotainment system makes that possible. Other cosmetic upgrades include new dash trim designs including more stars and more lights, and there are functional changes to help users cut features to maximize range. The 2024 EQB line will start with the EQB 250 front-drive model, but Mercedes-Benz Canada hasn't decided which AWD model we'll get. It could be the 225 hp EQB 300 or the 288 hp EQB 350 that was offered for 2023.

2024 Toyota Tundra Adds Nightshade Trims

Toyota is enhancing the Tundra pickup for 2024 by adding its Nightshade black-trim grade to the now dizzying array of 40 different configurations available on the truck. Also new are power-extendable tow mirrors available on a few high-spec trim grades. The 2024 Toyota Tundra lineup starts with the double cab SR at $51,450 with two-wheel drive or $54,750 as a 4x4. That's about a $3,000 price increase for the base model, with similar increases across the lineup. The top-spec truck is the Capstone Hybrid Max for $90,690.

2024 Toyota Camry Starts From $31k

Toyota also announced Canadian pricing for the 2024 Camry sedan. The Camry has still not added Toyota's new multimedia interface, but the sedan remains an excellent value in a market where those can be tough to find. The basic Camry SE starts from $30,990 with the prices climbing to $41,490 for a Hybrid XLE. That's about $500 more than last year. Toyota continues to offer front and all-wheel drive gas-powered versions of the Camry along with the hybrid and a TRD-badged V6.

Lamborghini Lanzador EV Crossover

Lamborghini revealed the Lanzador concept, its look at a fourth model in the company's lineup. Lamborghini calls it a "high ground clearance GT," we call it a two-door crossover. This is a purely electric model, expected to make around 1,360 hp. It's loaded with active aerodynamic aids, has a third-generation electronic suspension system, and, well, it looks like a Lamborghini. Don't expect anything like it in stores until 2028, but the concept promises eco-friendly parts like recycled 3D-printed seat foam, synthetic yarns, and merino wool.

Kia EV5 EV Revealed

Kia revealed the EV5 electric crossover in China. The model looks like a scaled-down copy of the three-row EV9, while the company calls it "a holistic solution for sustainable mobility." We're expecting it to go on sale in Canada next year, though that hasn't been confirmed. The model is equally like the EV9 inside, which means loads of screens, plenty of space, and tons of tech. There's no range info yet, but expect more about the EV5 to come from Kia sometime in October.

GMC Hummer EV Earthcruiser Camper

GMC and EarthCruiser are offering a Hummer EV transformed into a camper. The GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser upfit will add a carbon fibre pop-up camper to the back of the EV along with a battery pack of its own (and solar panels) to power a fridge for up to a week without touching the traction battery. The overland-ready Hummer EV camper comes with a touchscreen to control most of its functions, and it has camping features like indoor and outdoor showers, 120V plugs, small kitchen, and a flat pack toilet. The EarthCruiser package is expected to go on sale next year.

Electrify Canada to use Tesla NACS plug at its stations

Electrify Canada, an arm of Volkswagen, said that it will offer Tesla NACS charge plugs at its fast-charge EV stations by 2025. Electrify Canada stations will also continue to offer the CCS charge plug familiar to most non-Tesla EV owners, so existing owners and other brands will not be left out. Electrify Canada currently offers more than 30 fast charging stations capable of up to 350 kW with stations in BC, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. EC says it aims to hit 100 locations in Canada by 2026. Electrify Canada is the second major fast charge network to announce NACS plugs, following FLO.

Volvo and Polestar also move to Tesla plugs

Volvo, Polestar, and Electrify Canada are the latest to announce they will begin using Tesla's North American Charging Standard plug for EV charging. Volvo is the first European brand to announce the move, coming just weeks after Ford and GM announced they would be using the plug starting from 2025. As with those two, Volvo and Polestar will have access to 12,000 of Tesla's Supercharger stations across the U.S. and Canada. Volvo will offer a Tesla adaptor for its CCS cars beginning next year, while once cars equipped with the Tesla plug go on sale, Volvo will offer an adaptor to let them use CCS charge sites.

Stellantis Free2Move

Stellantis, parent of Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and Ram, has announced plans to expand its own charge network and improve customer charging experience. Called Free2Move, Stellantis says it will help deliver at-home charging solutions to customers including charge cables and wall boxes with a look toward wireless solutions in the future. It will provide charging solutions for business customers and Free2Move Charge Go will be the publicly accessible charge network.

Mazda3 to lose base engine

Mazda, back in gasoline-car news, is upgrading the 2024 Mazda3 Sport and sedan by ditching the 2.0L four-cylinder in favour of the 2.5L four that was previously an up-level option. The six-speed stick that came with that engine is also gone, so all 2024 Mazada3 models will be automatic with the exception of the GT hatch. The 2.5L engine makes 191 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, 44 more than the 2.0L. Mazda says it delivers better fuel economy as well, at 8.4 L/100 km city, 6.3 highway. The even more powerful 2.5L turbo engine will still be offered Also new this year will be the Suna Edition, which gets Zircon Sand metallic paint with black wheels and trim. Along with a Teracotta interior, it will be the top of the Mazda3 lineup. Pricing for the 2024 Mazda3 starts from $24,200 when it arrives in the fall, $1,000 more than last year's 2.0 automatic. The Sport hatchback should be here in the summer and starts from $24,950 and the Suna Edition tops out at $38,900.

IIHS finds mid-size pickups lacking in certain areas

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a U.S. safety advocacy group famous for its crash tests, has put mid-size pickups to a new test and found them lacking. "Our updated moderate overlap front crash test proved to be challenging for small pickups,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “A common problem was that the rear passenger dummy's head came dangerously close to the front seatback, and in many cases, dummy measurements indicated a risk of neck or chest injuries. All these things tell us that the rear seat belts need improvement.” Five crew cab pickups, the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, and Jeep Gladiator were tested with only the Frontier getting "acceptable" on the test for rear seat passengers. The other four were rated "poor." Of note, these were the outgoing versions of the Colorado, Tacoma, and Ranger, and the upcoming new models have not been tested.

New Lexus GX

Lexus has just revealed the third-generation GX, the first of two big SUV reveals for the brand this week. The GX 550 gets seriously boxy styling and a new twist on the company's signature spindle grille. As before, the GX is a body-on-frame SUV, this time built on the same chassis as the larger LX. The new platform allows towing up to 8,000 lbs. GX 550 means a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 and a 10-speed automatic. 4x4 is standard along with a locking Torsen limited-slip centre differential. The new Overtrail adds an electronic locking rear. Adaptive suspension is optional. Lexus has added a new Overtrail model aimed at Overlanders. It includes multi-terrain select, crawl control, and other off-road features. The 2024 Lexus GX is set to go on sale early next year.

New Lexus TX

Lexus has just launched a new big crossover called the TX. The 2024 Lexus TX is a three-row model that also becomes the brand's second PHEV. Based on the <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/reviews/2024-toyota-grand-highlander-first-drive-review">Toyota Grand Highlander</a>, the TX has room for seven carry-on bags behind the rearmost seats and enough room for adults in all three rows. The standard engine will be a 2.4L turbo-four, and there will be a hybrid system using that engine called the TX 500h. At the top of the line, a 3.5L V6 is paired with a battery that delivers 53 km of electric range in the TX 550h+. The TX will offer a large centre screen and tech features like a standard digital key. The TX 350 and TX 500h models go on sale this fall, the PHEV "at a later date."

Volvo reveals smallest and quickest new EV

Volvo revealed a new small electric crossover that will also be its quickest vehicle to date. The Volvo EX30 also has the lowest carbon footprint of any vehicle the company has ever built thanks to changes throughout the entire production process of the vehicle. The EX30 will be offered as a single motor Extended Range model that promises 445 km between charges and the 422 hp Twin Motor Performance that can hit 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. On the extensive list of safety assists is a new version of Park Pilot Assist that can even handle parking along a curve or fishbone-style spaces.

Mazda Suna edition

Mazda has just announced new special editions of the Mazda3, <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/reviews/2022-mazda-mx-30-ev-review">MX-30</a>, <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/vehicle-reviews/review-2022-mazda-cx-30-turbo">CX-30</a>, and CX-5. It's called the Suna Edition, which is Japanese for Sand and is based around the exclusive Zircon Sand Metallic paint. Inside, the cars will have terracotta seats with black suede inserts and gunmetal accents. All three gas models will come with Mazda's 2.5L turbo-four that makes up to 256 hp. These follow in the footsteps of Mazda's Kuro edition, which introduced Polymetal Grey paint and Garnet red leather inside. Pricing for the Suna Edition models will follow.

GM to get Tesla plug

General Motors has announced it will be integrating the Tesla Supercharger plug into its new EVs starting in 2025. This comes just weeks after Ford announced similar plans. GM says the collaboration will give GM EV drivers access to 12,000 Supercharger stations to start and brings the total number of compatible stations to more than 146,000. Starting next year, GM EV owners will be able to use the stations via an adaptor. In 2025, the models will have a direct plug for the stations. The Supercharger stations will also be added to GM's in-vehicle and mobile apps to allow drivers to find and pay for charging sessions.

New York, NY – With the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90 all-electric luxury SUVs heading to North America around the end of 2023, based on similar drivetrains and identically large batteries, the market race between these two closely related vehicles arguably becomes a choice of style and seats.

Which whispers more alluringly to you: the upright, classically conservative and practical Volvo seven-seater? Or the sleeker, less spacious but spicier five-seat Polestar 3?

The Polestar 3’s North American debut was conspicuously held the week before the New York International Auto Show, which Polestar did not officially attend. Noted enviro-conscious movie star Leonardo DiCaprio also helped bring some celebrity shimmer to the event, posing for photos with Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. And while Ingenlath acknowledged some technical similarities between the Polestar 3 and upcoming Volvo EV, he also stressed more than the visual differences between the two corporate cousins.

“It’s not just the same vehicle with a nicer top hat on it,” said Ingenlath at a technical deep dive on the Polestar 3 with other senior execs hours before the DJ and models showed up. “We have more of a pioneering role within the company,” he said, noting that the Polestar 3 will arrive first, and those first-year units to arrive are set to be produced in China, before its plant in South Carolina starts producing them around mid-2024.

Having globally introduced the 2024 Polestar 3 in October last year in Denmark, the luxury EV maker quickly started taking orders for the vehicle in Canada and the U.S. in November. It also released a surprising amount of information about the vehicle early, including its base price in Canada of just under $100k, especially considering that Volvo as of this writing has still not announced its EX90 price, which traditionally is held to just a few months before the first units arrive.

The Polestar 3’s six-figure price may sound expensive, especially when you consider that the EX90 will offer three rows of seating, which is currently still a relatively rare offering amongst any BEV models, at any price point.

But there was a strategic reason for this price in Canada, and it actually helped make the $99,900 starting price (after delivery charges) notably lower than the Polestar 3’s announced launch prices in both the U.S.($83,900, or C$113,417) and Europe (89,000 Euros, or C$131,711).

“We purposefully brought it in just under the ($100,000 vehicle) luxury tax,” said Hugues Bissonette, the Country Manager for Polestar Canada. The launch models come fully loaded, as they include the Plus and Pilot packages, with only a few available option packages that would push it over the six-figure luxury tax threshold.

One is a $7,000 Performance pack option, with which horsepower jumps from 489 hp to 517 hp, while torque increases from 620 lb-ft (840 Nm) of torque to 671 lb-ft (910 Nm). And all from a software upgrade, with more rated horsepower than the EX90, but the same torque in both regular and performance versions. Handling is also sharpened by stiffer springs and semi-active dampers, with rear torque-vectoring acting on wider 22-inch unique wheels. And distinctive yellow Polestar Engineered seatbelts.

Both the Polestar 3 and the EX90 will share the same large 111 kWh lithium-ion battery, of which 107 kWh will be usable, with a max charge speed of 250 kW, which is very high for a 400-volt system. Polestar says a DC quick charge will take 30 minutes to go from 10-80% charged, which is quick for a battery this large.

But it’s worth noting that you’ll need one of the relatively rare 350 kW DC quick-charging stations to achieve this max speed, and likely ideal conditions as well, since a 400-volt system will be working very hard to reach and keep anywhere near that 250 kW max charging speed.

It will be fascinating to DC quick charge these upon its arrival in North America, currently slated for the last quarter of this year, where Canada and the U.S. will be among the first markets to receive it.

Maximum range in the Polestar 3 will be 482 km, as rated by the EPA, which is notably lower than its 610 km preliminary range target originally communicated on Europe’s much more optimistic WLTP standard. Speaking of daily range, the company recommends charging it daily to 90% or less for ultimate battery longevity, although company engineers say it’s not going to be an issue to charge it overnight to 100% occasionally if you’re going to need the range.

“Sometimes people are afraid to charge their EVs to 100 percent,” because of the NMC (nickel Manganese Cobalt) chemistry of the battery, said Beatrice Simonsson, the international head of product management. “Though we recommend normally to charge to 80 or 90%, if you’re going on a trip and need the full 100, customers are totally fine to use it.”

If there are any issues, there’s a very generous eight-year, 160,000 km warranty on the battery. Some driving range reduction over the years due to lithium-ion battery degradation is expected and normal, as with all current batteries, but Polestar includes a battery capacity guarantee of 70% over those periods.

The Polestar 3 and its battery can also handle some tasks that aren’t normally strengths of BEVs, such as towing, up to 2,200 kg (4,500 lb), while offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from launch. Regular over the air (OTA) updates will also be provided.

Helping with winter conditions in particular, the Polestar 3 comes standard with a battery warmer, a heat pump, and interior pre-conditioning, either from an app or settings inside the vehicle. There’s no ability to manually switch on battery pre-conditioning for a quicker charge, which is unfortunate, but it will automatically pre-condition (warm up) the battery when you select a DC quick charger in the GPS system to navigate to, after choosing from three different levels of high-speed charging.

Many EV fans will be happy to know that there is also a one-pedal driving option, as well as a selectable creep-forward mode, which more closely mimics the feel of a gas vehicle, and is useful for folks with a steep driveway.

There will be some major capabilities that won’t be available right away. The most notable is an optional LiDAR system that for $7,000 adds extra cameras and an advanced laser “pod” on the roof similar to the one that comes standard on the EX90. It will help its driver-assistance technologies perform better in bad weather and at night (auto emergency braking and smart cruise especially), as well as increase its self-driving abilities in more areas and situations.

Ingenlath believes it’ll likely be two to three years before this system will achieve “unsupervised piloting,” as he described it, and likely first in California or other areas where similar systems are now being tested and up for legal approval.

Of course, the 2024 Polestar 3 will also have other luxury rivals in this class, such as the five-seat BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. But if it comes down in the end to a fashion choice between any BEV luxury SUV in this near-six figure segment, the Polestar 3 has little to worry about.

Volvo first to use HD Maps

The Volvo <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/volvo-ex90-marks-a-new-generation-of-electric-swedes">EX90</a> will be one of the first vehicles on the market to support Google HD Maps. A new and more comprehensive map that's designed just for automakers. The perks? Highly detailed and more up-to-date road information. Details like lane markings and the location and meaning of road signs. The new maps will be used along with the EX90's LIDAR, cameras, and radar sensors to help make its advanced safety features work. Volvo says it will allow semi-autonomous driving features like lane change assist and Pilot Assist. Volvo says the HD maps will support Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving technology once the L3 system becomes available.

Dodge Last Call Reveal moves to March

Dodge has rescheduled its Last Call event to showcase the final special edition of the current Dodge Challenger and Charger. Originally set for last November, it has been pushed to March 20th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The six prior Last Call models had been mostly small trim and feature changes. This one has us anticipating something big. Not just because of the delay, but because Dodge is now planning a car show, drag racing, and a showcase of the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT electric concept.

2022 was a slow year for auto sales

Canadian Auto Sales in 2022 were the lowest since 2009, but this time it's not just the economy to blame. A total of 1.49 million new cars and trucks is 9.1 percent less than last year, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. Sales trends have been all over the map over 2022, based largely on how an automaker is navigating global supply chain and inventory issues that particular month. Ford was the top-selling brand in 2022 with 240,325 vehicles sold. GM was second with 228,003, up 4.8 percent from last year. If inventories improve over 2023, as expected, sales could continue to grow, though that is largely hinging on the economy and rising interest rates which are causing monthly payments to climb.

Noisy Law

That funny noise that comes from hybrid and electric cars at low speeds is now the law. Though most EVs, hybrids, and PHEVs have already made the noise since U.S. regulations came into play in 2018, it is now also the law in Canada. As of December 21 2022, all new hybrid and EV models must make the sound at lower speeds. The vehicles were found to be so quiet at low speeds that there was an increased risk of collision for cyclists, pedestrians, and persons with disabilities. A study by US regulator NHTSA found that hybrids and EVs were 20 percent more likely to hit a pedestrian than a gas model and 50 percent more likely to hit a cyclist.

A Canadian EV

Say hello to the Arrow. Project Arrow was revealed at <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/top-ten/ces-2023-eight-of-the-latest-reveals-in-automotive-tech">CES last week</a>, and it's a showcase of what the large Canadian automotive industry is capable of. Beyond the big automakers who build cars here, Toyota, Honda, GM, Ford, and Stellantis, there exists a huge number of suppliers who help not just build the parts but develop the innovations that go into to those vehicles. Don't expect to see it on the road anytime, but do expect the components underneath that bodywork to end up in future EVs from automakers around the world.
