Mercedes Vision EQXX

Mercedes-Benz revealed the concept car for the next-generation CLA expected to enter production late next year. It's an electric hypermiler that takes tech developed for the Vision EQXX and transforms it into a road car that has an anticipated electric range of more than 750 km on the WLTP cycle. That range figure, and expected efficiency of 12 kWh/100 km would put the CLA at the top of the market for Evs. Benz says the vehicle's 800V charge system allows drivers to add up to 400 km of range in just 15 minutes. The car uses a new Mercedes architecture that will cover four different vehicle families in different body styles and sizes. It uses "almost CO2-free steel" and reduced carbon aluminum along with other materials that help reduce the carbon footprint of the supply chain by more than 40 percent.

Last manual Golf GTI

Volkswagen announced the last GTI with a manual transmission, called the Golf GTI 380. The name refers to the car's internal chassis code, and the package comes with black mirrors, Golf R wheels, and standard adaptive suspension. It will also be offered in yellow and grey paint. The GTI 380 starts from $36,895 and will arrive at dealers in the fall. Along with the announcement, Volkswagen confirmed that 2024 is the last year for the stick-shift Golf R, but the Jetta GLI manual should live for at least another year.

New electric GTI

Right around the same time, Volkswagen announced the first all-electric GTI concept car. The ID. GTI gets GTI looks and is built around the ID. 2all concept that VW showed in March. This is more than just a concept, VW said, because the automaker will build the car. This time the I stands for "intelligent" instead of Injected, but the ideas are similar. VW will give the car a locking front differential controlled by the computer. It will also have powertrain settings that are meant to simulate various classic GTI models. VW will add classic-look gauge displays too. The cabin golf ball will live on, as the drive mode selector instead of as the gear selector, and the car will have a new plaid fabric designed for the EV. While it is confirmed for production, just when it might arrive isn't clear.

Hyundai Sonata updated

Hyundai launched a refreshed 2024 Sonata that includes the addition of all-wheel drive for the first time. The Sonata gets more aggressive looks including new LED light bars front and rear. Inside, the car gets a new 12.3-inch digital cluster and same-sized center screen that are combined into one seamless bezel. The AWD system will be offered on 2.5L gas models, and Hyundai will continue to offer a hybrid model as well as the sporty 2.5T N-Line car. Expect the 2024 Hyundai Sonata at dealers this winter.

Hyundai Elantra refreshed

Hyundai also brought out a refreshed Elantra. Like its larger sibling, the 2024 Elantra gets new looks, though its new nose still bears a resemblance to the old one. Elantra adds new side airbags in the rear, a new rear seat belt reminder, and haptic feedback has been added to most of the driver assistance alerts. The cabin gets new soft-touch door panels with faux leather trim added to higher grades. There is a new 4.2-inch cluster display on Essential and Preferred trims, and Hyundai has added one USB-C plug in the front and a pair in the rear. The 2024 Elantra will also offer digital key, letting you open and start the vehicle with your phone. The high-performance Elantra N model lives on and sees enhancements including new 19-inch wheels, illuminated logo bucket seats, and changes to bushings and other hardware that should improve handling. Expect it at dealers this fall.

RAM TRX ending production

Ram has announced the end of the line for the supercharged TRX pickup. The 2024 Ram 1500 TRX 6.2L Supercharged V8 - Final Edition is the long name for the final special edition of the trucks. The 702 hp pickup ends production at the end of this calendar year, but Ram is saying goodbye with special satin titanium wheels and trim, patina stitching, and a special dash display splash logo. The Final Edition will also get most of the TRX option boxes checked including the 19-speaker stereo and all of the driver assists. Pricing starts from $150,720 in Canada and production is limited to 4,000 for the world. Non Final Edition trucks will also be available until the end of the year.

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+

Whether it’s a first-drive feature from the sun-soaked California coast, a quick news story about an off-road pickup that may (or may not) be coming to your local dealership or a review of a hot new sports sedan, somewhere Lee Bailie is writing about cars and car culture, something he’s been doing for almost a decade. A car guy to the core, he went on his first automotive plant tour at age seven.

Hard against the Pacific Ocean, with a backdrop featuring some of the finest cars in its storied history, Mercedes-AMG unveiled the second-generation GT Coupe at the Pebble Beach Concours along California’s Central Coast.

Like its predecessor, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe, which will begin arriving at Canadian dealers in the second quarter of next year, represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-AMG performance and comes packed with a wide array of advanced technology.

On the powertrain front, a hand-built 4.0-litre Biturbo V8 will power both models coming to Canada. For the GT 55, the engine will produce 469 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque, with a 0-100 km/h sprint of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 295 km/h.

In the GT 63, the 4.0L will pump out 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft. that shaves seven-tenths of a second off the GT 55’s 0-100 km/h time for a sizzling 3.2, with a top speed of 315 km/h. For comparison, the top-level GT R trim from the previous generation produced 577 hp and 516 lb-ft.

Changes of note for the V8 include a new oil pan, a repositioned intercooler and active crankcase ventilation. Power gains for the GT 63 were achieved via higher boost pressure, greater engine airflow and modified software.

Putting power to the ground is a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission that uses a wet clutch in place of a torque converter. The benefit is reduced weight and lower inertia, which improves accelerator responsiveness.

All-wheel drive is standard, but the 4MATIC+ system being used here is variable, meaning the engine torque split runs the gamut from 50:50 to pure rear-wheel drive depending on road conditions and driver inputs.

The GT’s chassis features a multi-link suspension set-up at the front and rear, with components that are made from forged aluminum to reduce weight. These include suspension links, steering knuckles, and wheel carriers. AMG Active Ride Control suspension with roll stabilization is also standard on both models.

A new limited-slip rear differential for improved rear-wheel traction and cornering speeds is standard issue, as is active rear-axle steering. The latter enables the rear wheels to steer in either the opposite direction (up to 97 km/h), or in the same direction (above 97 km/h) as the front wheels, which improves handling and control at the limit.

Six drive modes are available via AMG Dynamic Select, including slippery, comfort, sport, sport+, individual, and race. AMG Track Pace, also standard, is a part of the MBUX infotainment system that records more than 80 pieces of vehicle data during track usage.

On the design front, the GT Coupe bears a strong resemblance to its predecessor with flared front and rear haunches that house 21-inch wheels. The long hood-short deck fastback styling gives way to a massive front AMG radiator grille which, like the outgoing model, emphasizes the car’s wide, low-slung stance.

Flush-mounted door handles, hood power domes, a lower front air intake, and a deployable rear spoiler are among the GT Coupe’s unique styling details. As for lighting, the angled LED headlights feature three “light dots” as s daytime running light signature. The design is unified at the rear where the LED taillights form a 3D light dot element.

In the cabin, the big news is the GT Coupe is now available with optional rear seating, a 2+2 format for more useable space for objects including suitcases, briefcases, and bags, or for human occupants under five feet tall, such as children. Trunk capacity can also be expanded from 321 to 675 litres by folding the rear seatbacks down.

Elsewhere, standard AMG kit abounds and includes standard power-operated sports seats, and steering wheel, which is flat-bottomed and finished in Nappa leather.

A variety of options are available for items such as seating. AMG Performance seats, for instance, have integrated headrests and ventilated backrests, and side bolsters that narrow when sport, sport+ or race modes are engaged. Single and two-tone Nappa leather seating with diamond quilting is also available.

As for tech, the GT Coupe makes use of two large digital displays, a 12.3-inch configurable instrument cluster, and an 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen which features the MBUX infotainment system. An optional head-up display in also available, and ambient lighting is offered in 64 colours.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe goes on sale in the second quarter of next year. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

First Look: 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe

VIENNA, Austria – Although its appearance may not scream it, the all-new 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is, arguably, the most important car the Stuttgart automaker has launched in a period that has seen a flood of new models hit the market.

The E-Class, with a lineage stretching back more than 75 years, is one of the best-selling Mercedes models of all time, but the 2024 model also has the distinction of being the company’s last new model to be built on an internal combustion engine (ICE) platform.

Hence, it’s a car that serves as a line of demarcation, as Mercedes moves from ICE to pure electric propulsion. In press materials, the company describes it as, “a bridge between tradition and digitalization.”

The new E-Class will be offered in a wide array of global variants, including several plug-in hybrids (and a wagon!), but none will be sold on this side of the Atlantic. Instead, North America’s E-Class range will consist of ICE-only sedans with 48-volt mild hybrid assist.

Two models will begin arriving near the end of the year: a four-cylinder turbo 350 E (255 hp / 295 lb-ft.), and an inline six-cylinder turbo 450 E (375 hp / 369 lb-ft.). Both will be paired with nine-speed automatic transmissions and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Dimensionally, the new E-Class has a wheelbase that is two centimetres longer than the outgoing model, which delivers more interior space for all passengers.

Visually, the new E-Class has long, limousine-like proportions, with a short front overhang and a long hood that pushes the cabin further back, in what Mercedes calls “cab-backward” design. Long rear overhangs emphasize a sleek stance that has a smooth and slippery side profile.

Up front, new LED headlights, a power dome hood, new air intakes and a large black and chrome-trimmed grille give the E-Class a more aggressive appearance. Both Canadian-spec models will come with standard AMG styling cues, including the grille design which includes many small three-pointed stars flanking a large one in the centre.

Canadian wheel options are also of the AMG variety (21-inchers shown), and black trim, such as front air intakes are standard kit. Of note, the stand-up hood ornament will not be offered here, so we’ll have to make do with a flat hood badge.

A new LED taillight design wraps into the car’s corners with elements that are in the shape of the three-pointed star. Dual silver-trimmed exhaust finishers housed in a black diffuser insert add to the car’s AMG look and feel.

Inside, the E-class is a real tour de force, with a list of technological innovations as long as one’s arm. The showstopper in the new E-Class cabin is the MBUX Superscreen a feature that, as the name suggests, is a dashboard-covering digital glass panel that incorporates a large central multimedia touchscreen and a 10.25-inch unit for the passenger. The Superscreen shown here is optional in Canada, but the standard floating 14.4-inch multimedia touch panel is nothing to sneeze at.

The Superscreen, which is a part of Mercedes’ new digital infrastructure, is something to behold. The central multimedia touchscreen impresses with its pin-sharp resolution and remarkable map detail, but the passenger screen has its own innovations. For example, if the driver attempts to look at it the screen dims to reduce distraction.

The display itself offers a variety of functions, including navigation, games, music, and video streaming. Even though I was in Austria, several CNN clips were available, and I even watched a trailer for The Batman, dubbed in German, while riding along as a passenger.

As for the new digital infrastructure, it’s advanced stuff. Essentially, it’s more software-driven, which means that computing functions that were once separate are now controlled by a single processor in a powerful central computer. All screens, including the 10.25-inch configurable instrument cluster, have centralized control, with the main advantage being faster data transmission. The new E-Class is also 5G-enabled, which works in conjunction with a third-party data provider.

Other tech-related features of note include the presence of a dash-mounted selfie camera, which can be used to conduct remote Webex meetings. Webex is one of several apps that will be available for the central multimedia display at launch. Others include Angry Birds, TikTok, and web browser Vivaldi.

The new E-Class will also be available with Active Ambient Lighting with Sound Visualization that changes the light display based on the beats and rhythms of the music being played.

Voice controls have also been updated, so that when the “Just Talk” function is enabled, the “hey Mercedes” prompt is no longer needed. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also being deployed to learn patterns for features that are used repeatedly, such as ambient lighting and climate settings. Mercedes aims to use AI to automate these functions into pre-selected “routines” that users can choose from, or they can create their own.

So, the new E-Class has loads of impressive new technology but how does it drive?

Splendidly.

I spent about half a day driving a 450 E tester on local roads and highways, including the Autobahn, in and around Vienna, and come away impressed with the car’s level of refinement, performance and general driving dynamics.

The turbo inline-six works in conjunction with an integrated starter-generator (ISG), to give the E-Class a boost of mild hybridization. The ISG uses a new battery, which has increased the output of the electric motor from 15 to 17 kW, with torque output rated at 148 lb-ft.

In practice, this electrified boost helps the E 450’s acceleration from rest, and for inevitable highway merging and passing. The torque curve of the turbo inline-six is quite flat, with peak torque beginning at just 1,800 rpm, so the ISG delivers power in the meat of the powerband while also delivering improved fuel efficiency. It should also help with cold weather starting in our home and native land.

My E 450 tester delivered a smooth and quiet ride that often felt like gliding. Sport mode makes the engine growl a bit louder, along with requisite sharper throttle response and higher engine revs, but only by a degree. The car can be quite fast, but it’s also a very pleasant cruiser.

In sum, the E-Class remains the automotive equivalent of a custom-tailored suit. Everything is precisely assembled and works together seamlessly including the car’s finely crafted cabin, which I didn’t touch on, but the photos speak for themselves. It is as comfortable as it appears.

This is a time of great change for the automotive industry as carmakers, including Mercedes-Benz with its EQ lineup, shift from internal combustion towards an electric future. More than 16 million E-Classes since 1946, and this one, the last in a long line of internal combustion engine cars, is a fitting tribute to that legacy.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will begin arriving in late 2023. The E 450 will arrive early next year, Pricing and fuel consumption will be announced closer to launch.

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class First Drive Review

All-new Mercedes CLE

Mercedes-Benz is replacing the E-Class and C-Class coupes and convertibles with one new model called the CLE. The CLE is longer than both models it replaces and the same width as the E-Class, so customers won't be getting a downgrade in size. The CLE offers a long-nose and short decklid design, and it adds some extra sportiness to the car compared with the more elegant C and E cars it replaces. A four-cylinder offering will be the only one in Canada to start, badged CLE 300. It makes 255 hp from a 2.0L engine with 48V mild hybrid assist. One tech highlight is the use of AI to learn automated comfort functions. It will also include templates like "cold day" to switch seat heating on automatically or "date night" where it plays romantic music. The Mercedes-Benz CLE coupe hits Canada in early 2024, the Cabriolet in the middle of the year.

Canyon AEV

GMC has launched the AEV version of its 2024 Canyon AT4X. The Canyon AT4X sees GMC teaming up with American Expedition Vehicles to add off-road goodies like 35-inch tall mud-terrain tires, a best-in-class 12.2 inches of ground clearance, and some seriously rugged steel bumpers. AEV also supplies its steel skid plates to protect essential underbelly bits of the Canyon for off-roaders. It also has a bed-mount spare tire holder and AEV branding on the headrests and a few other places around the truck. Like the standard AT4X, the AT4X AEV Edition comes with a 310 hp version of GMC's 2.7L turbo-four. It also has Multimatic DSSV dampers like those on the standard AT4X.

Stellantis forging ahead with new EV platform

Stellantis, parent of Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and others, has introduced a new electric vehicle platform. STLA Medium is the first of four global EV platforms Stellantis is planning, and it says this one will be for “C” and “D” segment vehicles. This covers compact and midsize vehicles. Stellantis says it currently has 26 vehicles in those segments. The automaker promises more than 700 km of range from the platform with battery packs up to 98 kWh. It will be a 400-V platform. Stellantis says it will be used for cars, crossovers, and SUVS, and that it will be able to offer massive 29-inch wheels.

Windsor Gigafactory

At least some of those vehicles are likely to use battery packs built at the Stellantis Gigafactory in Windsor, ON. The automaker along with the federal and provincial governments have signed a new deal to resume construction of the NextStar Energy EV battery plant. Construction had paused while Stellantis negotiated for a better deal, and now the two levels of government have worked to "level the playing field" in the words of COO Mark Stewart, with US incentives. The plant is expected to start production next year with an annual capacity of 45 gWh.

Mercedes to adopt NACS

Mercedes-Benz is the latest to jump on the North American Charging Standard. The NACS plug, the one designed and used by Tesla, is suddenly the hot ticket. Mercedes-Benz is just the latest of half a dozen automakers to announce the switch in the last month. Starting next year, MB EV drivers will be able to access 12,000 Tesla Supercharger stations. The company will start putting Tesla plug ports on its EVs starting in 2025. Mercedes-Benz says it plans to continue to build its own network with more than 2,500 high-power EV charge stations in North America by the end of the decade.

ROAD TRIP GLE &amp; GLE COUPÉ; USA; April 2023

For over half a decade, Dan Heyman has written professionally about cars and car culture, specializing in luxury/performance vehicles, 4 x 4s and pickup trucks, with a micro city car or two thrown in for good measure. If he's not striking a spacebar, he's likely out photographing cars on the twists and turns of the Coast Mountain roads outside his hometown of Vancouver, BC, or cutting a line on a racetrack.

While the changes to the Mercedes GLE-Class SUV and Coupe were announced some time ago, there was no confirmation at that time whether or not the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) GLE 450e version – hitherto available in the US, but not Canada – would be making its way up here.

Well, that’s all in the past because today, Mercedes has confirmed that the GLE 450e will be joining the GLE 350, the GLE 450, AMG GLE 53, and AMG GLE 63 in the line-up in late 2023 for the 2024 model year. It will be available in three trims: Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle and there are additional AMG line options and other styling packages – the “Night” package being one -- so it’s looking like there will be a 450e for everybody.

“We believe that this plug-in hybrid vehicle will play a valuable role as a bridging technology as we continue to transition to fully electric Mercedes-EQ vehicles,” said Mike Maduro, national product manager at Mercedes. “It’s a great vehicle and we look forward to bringing it to Canada later this year.”

Available only in SUV form – there is no four-door Coupe version – the GLE 450e sees its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor (good for 248 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque) complimented by a 134 hp permanent magnet EV motor for a total combined system output of 381 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque.

The GLE 450e can drive under full EV power for a limited time; range figures have not yet been announced, but if the competition from the likes of the Volvo XC90 Recharge or the BMW xDrive40e are anything to go by, expect something in the 40-50 km range. The 450e has an 11 kW on-board charger and can be plugged in to charge at night so if your daily commute is a short one in the city, you’ll be able to spend much of your time in EV mode. It also gets a 60 kW on-board DC charger which not many PHEVs have.

In addition to the addition of the PHEV powertrain, the GLE line gets new exterior styling details for ’24, as well as the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available Dolby Atmos audio, music streaming, and a new steering wheel with next generation capacitive controls.

Built exclusively in Mercedes’ Tuscaloosa, AB plant (that’s on its way to becoming fully solar-powered by 2025), expect to see the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e in dealers in Q3 of ’23.

Mercedes-Benz is about to launch a new E-Class. The midsizer has been the heart of the Benz lineup for 70 years, but though the company won't confirm it this is likely the last one to be powered by gas. That makes it both a big deal and a bit of a farewell to a model that is a luxury staple around the world.

Though it might be the last, it really is new. That means longer, with an extra two centimetres between the wheel arches leaving more room for passengers. There is more headroom, too, with Mercedes-Benz pushing up the roof by 5 mm.

There aren't many styling surprises here. From the side it looks much like the other three-box Mercedes-Benz sedans. The nose takes some cues from the electric EQE model, but it is still distinct. At the back, Mercedes-Benz engineers clearly had some fun; just look at those taillights with their super-cool LED interior highlight.

The latest E-Class will be tech-heavy, starting with the new Superscreen. One up over the Hyperscreen just launched in some of the Benz flagships, this whopper has a screen for the driver, the centre, and even the front passenger. Though the driver's screen is separate, and not part of the ensemble.

That front passenger can watch movies or stream other videos. Even conference calls, thanks to the new 5G system. While the driver can watch the screens when the E-Class is stopped, some magic tech blocks the driver's view when the car is moving.

The latest version of the MBUX interface combines what used to be multiple features into one single (more powerful) computer. That gives Benz programmers more flexibility and more capability.

It also lets them link more systems. This E will get active ambient lighting that can let you see the audio you're listening to. The system can now recognize commands without the "Hey, Mercedes" prompt, too.

Then there is the new AI. It can learn about your routines and then respond to them before you even ask. Things like automatically turning on the heated seats at 10 degrees because that's when you use them. Or automatically rolling down the car's window when you get to the same parking pass kiosk every morning. Cool.

Mercedes-Benz will let you add apps to the system, including the controversial TikTok. Benz says if you don't want them you don't have to install them, and that it has confidence in the data security legislation of the EU and other countries where it operates.

Air and adaptive suspension systems will be offered. Rear-wheel steering for agility and stability will also be on the options list. The announcement from Benz didn't get into driver assistance, but the company did say that the E-Class won't get the Level 3 systems of the S-Class.

On paper, the engines sound the same, but Mercedes-Benz says they're new too. The E 350 gets a 2.0L turbo-four that uses the more efficient Miller combustion cycle. It makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, with the 48V mild hybrid system adding 20 horses and 148 lb-ft.

There will be a 3.0L inline-six, too, badged E 450. That one is also heavily revised from last year and makes 375 hp with 369 lb-ft. The 48V mild-hybrid boost adds the same amount of power.

Will there be an AMG version? The Mercedes-Benz execs we spoke with couldn't confirm. But we were told, "you see me smiling, so maybe that helps." Message received.

Europe gets a plug-in hybrid, but North America won't be. The reason, says Benz, is that there isn't demand. Its own market research says buyers want gas cars or full EVs. If that perception changes, the models are there to bring over.

Expect more about the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class as it gets closer to dealers. The E350 is expected in the fourth quarter of this year with the E450 to follow in Q1 of 2024.

Ericeira, Portugal - The crew in Stuttgart has been plunging with both feet into various all-electric segments, smartly serving up offerings in the popular (and profitable) SUV and crossover body styles. Their latest effort? This EQE SUV. It's a size smaller than the jumbo <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/reviews/2023-mercedes-benz-eqs-suv-first-drive">EQS SUV</a> we drove last year, though it shares platform bones with that vehicle – and much in the way of appearance. German car companies have always been good at creating different lengths of sausage, so it’s not unlikely onlookers may mistake this ride for its larger cousin.

A pair of models, both with all-wheel drive, will be on tap when this rig comes to Canada later this year as a 2023 model. The EQE 350 4Matic SUV ($94,900) can muster 288 horsepower and 564 lb.-ft of torque from its dual motor setup, while the EQE 500 4Matic SUV ($104,900) belts out a healthy 402 all-electric horses and 633 lb.-ft of right-now torque. Battery capacity is equal across both, at 90.6 kWh, but the more powerful twin ekes out a win in terms of officially stated driving range: 433 kilometres versus 407 clicks.

This is the opposite of what’s expected – typically one trades range for power in an EV – but Mercedes attributes the discrepancy to tire and wheel choice, meaning one may not see those figures if they opt for snazzy 22-inch dubs instead of the aero-friendly 19 inchers. Call it 400 kilometers of range for each trim, a number that seemed realistic according to vehicle readouts during our first drive, and choose your optional trim packages wisely if the maximum range is your primary bogey whilst shopping for an all-electric luxury SUV. This Merc can hoover up electrons from an appropriately stout Level 3 public charger to the tune of 170kW, meaning it can juice itself from 10 – 80 percent in about half an hour. An at-home Level 2 can do the deed overnight while all hands slumber.

The EQE SUV is immediately recognizable as an electric Mercedes, which is to say it bears an enormous tri-star logo the size of a dinner plate on its non-grille, sure to advertise yer new purchase to nosy neighbours across the street. And, before you ask – there is no frunk underneath that hood. Mercedes insists the space is better used for tech-laden cabin air filters and other unmentionables, like the utility floor you’re not supposed to visit at a fancy hotel. We feel the market will decide if this is the right approach, especially with some direct competitors choosing to read from the Book of Frunk.

One benefit of such an arrangement? A cavernous interior. Head- and legroom was ample in both the front and rear quarters for this 6’6” author, despite the presence of a retractable panoramic glass roof which – combined with underfloor EV batteries – generally scuppers headroom. In fact, your long-legged writer had to move the driver’s seat forward on its tracks to find a comfortable driving position, which is great news for second-row passengers who will have abundant space in which to enjoy their own climate controls and adjustable chairs. For comparison, the EQE SUV roughly splits the difference in length between the Tesla Model Y and Model X but is within a shout of the new Cadillac Lyriq in all dimensions.

The interior is loaded to the gunwales with sumptuous materials and bleeding-edge technology, as one would expect in an all-electric Mercedes. The brand’s expansive MBUX Hyperscreen is a treat for non-luddite eyes, with a pane of gently curved glass spanning the entire dashboard housing a trio of crystal-clear screens. Ahead of the driver is a 12.3-inch display that can be reconfigured a few different ways to serve up vehicle vitals, while the passenger gets their own 12.3-inch OLED display with a separate user interface in which whoever’s riding shotgun can call up driving info, maps, or even watch their own movie through a streaming service. This screen uses camera-based blocking logic to dim the display if it catches the driver taking their eyes off the road for a gander at what’s occupying the passenger. This is the type of luxury feature you don’t know you wanted until it is – literally – right in front of you.

In between these displays is an IMAX-sized infotainment screen, handling all manner of features and climate controls plus doing duty as deejay and navigator. The former can tag team with an optional Burmester 3D sound system and Dolby Atmos to create the type of musical atmosphere once exclusively reserved for elite home systems. We made sure to sample the standard infotainment as well, comprised of a 17.7-inch tablet that integrates well into EQE’s dashboard without looking like an errant tablet temporarily lodged on the console. Both systems displayed navigation information to such detail that it literally showed rolling surf on the ocean when we neared the coast.

Materials and finish were typically Mercedes, which is to say top-tier, save for a very un-Benz-like hollow sound behind the passenger-side dashboard trim panel when a Hyperscreen is not present. Don’t rap on it with your knuckles and you’ll never know this fault. Numerous materials are crafted from recycled resources to keep the environmentalists happy yet maintain the quality one expects from a vehicle wearing this badge.

Our drive routes took us out of a snarled Lisbon, up through a series of Autobahn-style highways, and onto the rural roads of Portugal. The stronger EQE 500 was very agreeable, unleashing all its torque with a simple flex of the driver’s big toe which made it a great tool for finding a gap in traffic or zipping up to felonious speeds on the open autoroutes. But it would be a mistake to call the EQE 350 a slouch, mainly because it trails big-bro by less than 70 lb.-ft of torque. In truth, most customers will be more than happy with the 350 unless they require the bigger badge to impress their friends. Wind noise was perceptible around the oddly huge A-pillars, a consequence of silent electric motoring that one wouldn’t even know was present in a traditional ICE car. Road noise was never pronounced, regardless of surface.

Depending on the driving situation and the power required, the EQE 4Matic’s powertrain will automatically decouple the front-axle electric motor to reduce rolling resistance and increase range. All-wheel drive kicks back in when the system senses extra traction is required, such as in slick weather or when the driver calls down to the engine room for more power during passing. This transition is invisible, which means it’s working precisely as designed. A rear axle steering system with a maximum steering angle of 10 degrees is standard on the 500 and available on the 350, a trick piece of kit that proved its worth in tight Lisbon traffic where drivers regularly displayed a terrifying mix of apathy and aggression.

With all this in mind, it’s arguable the EQE SUV is Mercedes’ most important vehicle right now. It is sized right for Canadian shoppers seeking a premium all-electric mid-size SUV, packs more real-world passenger space than its footprint might suggest, and offers two powertrain flavours paying service to either id or ego. A driving range of 400-ish kilometres doesn’t top the charts but should be enough to satisfy the needs of most families and its 170kW charging speed is as much as most Canadian public chargers are able to supply right now.

Add acres of typical Mercedes luxury plus optional AMG-line exterior styling for those of us who don’t live life on the greyscale and you’ve a strong competitor in what’s becoming a crowded segment. Look for both variants of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV to appear in Canadian showrooms during the month of May.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV First Drive Review

Mercedes-Benz is well on its way to stuffing its showrooms full of all-electric vehicles from each vehicle segment, now home to SUVs of several sizes plus a couple of sedans. The subject of this week’s Base Camp is the latter – and we’ll go on record as saying it’s pleasant to see car makers continuing to produce this body style instead of being blindly laser-focused on crossovers and SUVs.

The <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/first-look-mercedes-benz-eqe-suv-mercedes-amg-eqe-suv">EQE</a> is Merc’s midsize all-electric sedan, mashing the brand’s “EQ” nomenclature with the familiar “E” from the long-running gasoline-powered E-Class sedan. Hey, at least it gives customers a known anchor point on which to find their footing. A trio of trims are on offer in Canada, starting with the $85,600 EQE 350 4Matic. To put this vehicle in perspective, its size straddles the gulf between Tesla’s compact Model 3 and larger <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/reviews/why-i-love-my-vehicle-2022-tesla-model-s-long-range">Model S</a>. There are a host of paint colours available, including the tasty Patagonia Red shown above.

Canadian customers will find all-wheel drive on every new EQE sedan, which is not the case in many other markets. Its electric motors are good for 288 horsepower and 564 lb.-ft of torque, while its 90-kWh battery has an estimated range of just over 400 kilometres on a full charge. When it’s time to replenish those electrons, the EQE should be able to hoover up electricity from a 170kW Level 3 fast charger with sufficient vigor to juice the thing from 10 to 100% in about half an hour.

In its Exclusive trim, the EQE 350 comes standard with MB-Tex upholstery, a material which looks and feels much like real leather but historically has been so durable that it’s likely to outlive the car itself. A 12.3-inch instrument cluster serves up key information to the driver while a separate 12.8-inch OLED media display in the centre stack serves as party central for infotainment and ventilation controls. It is also host to wild and wonderful animations about the car’s power delivery and 4Matic all-wheel drive operation.

What We'd Choose

As with nearly all Mercedes-Benz vehicles, trim levels and option packages can quickly swell the EQE’s price tag faster than you can say auf wiedersehen to your bank balance. Stepping up to the EQE 500, with 402 horses and 633 lb.-ft of electric twist is nearly a $10,000 proposition – we’re not sure $87.50 per pony is a sensible spend of cash.

Sticking with the EQE 350, moving from the Exclusive to Pinnacle trim is approximately half that premium but does bring a host of excellent features such as a heads-up display, quad-zone climate control, and Mercedes’ trick interior ambient lighting system. It’s the latter which is most tempting, since it turns the cabin into an event of illumination, responding to changes in ventilation temperature and even subtle beats of music – yet manages to do so in a way that isn’t devastatingly distracting. For this author, selecting that trim on the EQE 350 is an easy choice.

Kia’s reveals three-row EV

Kia revealed its biggest EV yet. The three-row Kia EV9 will seat up to seven, with electric power and a shape that looks just like the concept. While the bold and blocky shape won't get the coach-opening doors of the concept, it will get second-row seats that pivot rearward. Or sideways. Wisely, the dash is almost identical to the rest of Kia's conventional cars, with dual 12.3-inch screens and plenty of console space. Expect more details, like range, later this month.

BMW HUD 2.0

BMW just announced that its next generation of electrics will have a full-windshield head-up display. Called BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW says the driver can see more information or project it to be seen by everyone in the car. The automaker says it should give drivers a new feeling of space in the Neue Klasse EVs. The tech is expected to come to market for 2025.

Mercedes GLA and GLB refreshed for 2024

Mercedes-Benz is giving the GLA and GLB small crossovers a facelift for 2024. The update consists mostly of new light signatures and grilles to bring them in line with the latest MB models. A 10.25-inch dash display is now standard and paired with a same-sized centre screen. Both models get the latest MBUX system and the centre touch control is gone. The GLA 250 and GLB 250 get 48-volt mild hybrid assist to help save fuel in certain situations. The GLA and GLB 35 models, the AMG vehicles, get the same 48-volt upgrade. Expect the models around the end of the year.

More Porsche EV

Porsche laid out more of its electrification plans, including a hybrid 911, electric 718 and Macan variants, and, now, a three-row electric SUV that will sit above the Cayenne. The electric Macan is still expected next year, with the 718 Cayman and Boxster "mid-decade." That fourth model will be based on Porsche's upcoming SSP architecture, developed with Audi. The brand says it will be sporty and luxurious, with Porsche performance. The Cayenne itself won't go electric just yet, but a new chassis and upgraded PHEV models are expected to be revealed this year. As far as the iconic 911, Porsche still says there are no plans for a PHEV and it is not talking EV.

Ioniq 6 sedan pricing

Hyundai has just priced the Ioniq 6. The longest-range EV for less than $120,000 will start from $54,999 when it arrives in Canada this spring. Just under the federal EV incentive cutoff. That's the Preferred RWD Long Range model, with a range estimate of 581 km. The Ioniq 6 will also be offered with AWD for $57,999 (509km), and the Ultimate Package brings the car to $63,999. Ioniq 6 will have 350 kW Level 3 charging, a full suite of driver assistance features, and sleek sedan style.

Michelin EV tires

Michelin announced plans to build more tires for EVs at its plants in Nova Scotia. The tire maker announced a $300m investment, including $44m from the federal government. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on-hand for the announcement along with NS Premier Tim Houston. The three NS plants will be upgraded to produce larger sizes of tires and tires designed to improve range for EVs and fuel economy for commercial trucks. Michelin says the investment will also help reduce plant carbon emissions.

The new GLC Coupé: The lifestyle model in the successful Merced

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is slightly larger, with more space for cargo. It also gets the latest big MBUX screens from the brand. But what has us the most intrigued is the fancy new LED matrix lighting system that can help you see better in the dark while also giving you warning messages and letting you know if you're about to run a stop sign.

Mercedes-Benz has stretched the bodywork at the rear by 31 mm. Now 4,763 mm long, the 2024 GLC has 545L of cargo capacity with the seats up. Fold them and you get 1,490L, which is 45L more behind the seats and 90L more overall. The roof is slightly taller and the wheels are pushed further out, though the actual width doesn't change.

You might need to see the two parked side-by-side to spot the differences, but the 2024 GLC Coupe has some big styling changes too. The latest Benz grille and new nose are the most apparent changes, but tweaking in the wind tunnel has lowered the coefficient of drag by 3 points.

Digital Light is what Mercedes-Benz calls its new headlight system. The GLC Coupe has LED lights as standard, but the optional Digital Light elevates the system. The matrix of LEDs inside the housing can be controlled individually. That lets Benz tailor the light to the situation for better visibility without blinding other road users.

The safety aspects of the light system are super cool. Mercedes-Benz says that it will be able to project guide lines, symbols, and even animations onto the roadway for the driver to see. Things like warnings to tell you you're entering the highway in the wrong direction or about to run a red light. The lights can also use a spotlight function that lights up pedestrians and shows an arrow so the driver can see which way they're walking.

A newly standard 360-degree camera system comes with features to make parking easier with a side benefit of off-road capability. The camera views include a "transparent hood check" that lets the driver see directly in front to get around large rocks or potholes. Parking sensors all around let the GLC park itself or help you to do it yourself with less stress.

Mercedes-Benz announced just one engine at launch. That's the 2.0L turbo-four with 48V mild hybrid system that will be badged GLC 300. AWD is standard. The engine makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, with both figures boosted slightly on demand by the 48V electric motor.

The cabin looks <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/features/the-mercedes-benz-c-class-is-better-than-ever-does-anyone-care">impressively high tech</a>, thanks to the 12.3-inch digital dash and the portrait-oriented 11.9-inch centre screen. That floating centre screen is angled toward the driver for a more cockpit-like feel. The screen operates with the latest MBUX system. Benz says voice controls and other responses are improved, with faster operation.

Last but not least, Mercedes-Benz says the 2024 GLC Coupe will have more standard equipment than before. That includes AMG Line trim, smartphone integration, power hatch, moonroof, and other goodies. Benz is also simplifying its options list, combining features that were frequently ordered together into packages. Paint, trim, and upholstery are all still widely customizable.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is set to go on sale in early 2024. Expect pricing, more details, and (probably) AMG variants as that date approaches.
