SANTA MONICA, CA: Volkswagen is going at the heart of the North American seven-seat SUV market with the 2018 Atlas unveiled last night (Oct. 27) on the fabled pier in Santa Monica.

To be built in Chattanooga, TN, it will be the largest Volkswagen ever assembled in North America when it comes to showrooms in June.

It will be available in Canada in four trim levels with a choice of front- or 4Motion all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Atlas is based on VW’s Modular Transverse Matrix platform.

While VW calls Atlas an intermediate SUV, it is longer and wider then the current Touareg at 198.3 inches and 77.9 inches respectively.

The rear of the intermediate-size Atlas features finely chiseled lines.

At the reveal, VW officials were being coy about pricing with the official press release stating it would be at, “a price designed to draw customers’ attention in the family SUV segment.”

Power will come from either a 2.0-litre turbo direct injection four-cylinder with 238 hp or a 3.6-litre VR6 engine with 280 hp.

The 4Motion system has a Driving Mode Selection feature that allows the driver to select specific parameters based on driving conditions.

Cargo and utility offers space for seven adults and their baggage with access to the third row made easier by a second row seating system that works even with a child seat in place.

Atlas will feature a driver-centric instrument display or the optional Volkswagen Digital Cockpit which allows the driver to configure vehicle information.

And for those who enjoy music at its best, Atlas is available with the Fender Premium Audio System with 480 watts, 12 channel and 12 speakers.

Driver/safety aids include: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist); Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert; Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), which actively helps the driver steer the car back into its lane and Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist).

More information is expected when Atlas is officially unveiled at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
