Traffic Jams: Ferrari F40
4x4 off-road safari. Egypt. Sinai desert
Car: Ferrari F40
Song: Tom Jones, “Thunderball”
Where: Highway 1, California – “Big Sur”
The guys on Top Gear said this was the most beautiful supercar in the world, so who are you to disagree? It certainly looks like it doesn’t care what anyone thinks about it – the only car with a rear spoiler more conspicuous was the Plymouth Superbird, and no one who ever wanted one of those could afford an F40, not if they robbed every liquor store in a hundred mile radius of their parole officer. The F40 is less a car than a statement of pure alpha male status, and it deserves to hit the road to the sound of Tom Jones’ Bond theme, sung so hard that the Welshman passed out after the final note. And what better place for it than Highway 1, carved out between mountains and crashing waves, each curve letting you accelerate past yet another loser in a rented Sebring or some schmuck delivering a trailer full of diapers to a Wal-Mart in Encino. No, the F40 isn’t a very nice car, but you’re not a very nice person, are you?
