Song: Deep Purple, “Highway Star”
Where: Sebring International Raceway, last hour of the 12 Hours of Sebring
There’s a new Corvette, and they’re launching it with all the fanfare of a new Rolling Stones album, which is to say we all knew it was coming, and something will have gone terribly wrong with the world if there isn’t another one. You remember the first time you saw one – a metallic green Stingray owned by the spoiled son of your dad’s boss; you hated him, but man you loved that car. It’s nice the way GM treats their halo car like it’s a new Ferrari, but we all know that the ‘Vette is and will always be the poor man’s sports car, two seats and a whole lot of power for guys who worked hard to afford one. You can style it like an F12 but it’s still more about ragged glory than fine wine, ridiculous at Monza but meant to be driven hard on the pitiless, terrifying corners of a place like Florida’s Sebring Raceway, by guys who once owned denim jackets with Machine Head written on the back with ballpoint pen.
