Brooklyn, NY: They’re Back! “Were sorry it’s a bit late, but we have been slightly incapacitated by age and decrepitude” apologized Captain Slowly at their surprise appearance in NYC to kick off the premiere of the second season of The Grand Tour.
The reason the show is late this year is no surprise to most, a major reason being Hammond’s Rimac Crash, but unsurprisingly enough all three of the hosts ended up in hospital somehow.
Jeremy had a run in with pneumonia, Richard almost died, and James… well let's just say he prefers not to discuss it.
But the show is back and they’ve added more of what audiences loved and got rid of what didn’t work.
The travelling studio tent is no more, but it will instead stay put at a walking distance from Jeremy’s house, but also equidistant from both Hammond’s and May’s residences as well. Presumably cause they’re getting old and not that willing for the weekly worldwide commute.
“There were one or two elements of season 1, that we got a distinct impression from looking at social media, were not that popular. Weirdly even over here, the American Driver we had… he’s gone.” expressed Clarkson. “Celebrity Brain Crash…that was an accident. It was crap, so we have actual guests on this season.” If anyone remembers the star in a reasonably priced car on the old Top Gear, well, this time around the car is not so reasonably priced, but instead it’s an expensive Jaguar.
Season 1 was by far and away the most popular show on the, fairly new to the market, Prime Video streaming service offered by Amazon.
And with all the anticipation and speculation over Season 2, not to mention the multiple delays, it is shaping up to be even more popular this time around. With all the changes and upgraded segments, the boys have brought The Grand Tour back to its roots, where it’s just three old blokes yelling at each other and typically not agreeing on anything.
Rumour has it that an entire episode is unscripted, but more importantly this is the global motoring show that audiences around the world know and love.
I don’t think the world was ready for the loss of the old Top Gear, which in its time was one of the most popular TV programs in the world.
At the NYC premiere Amazon teased us with an exclusive look at the first episode. It was so fresh that even our illustrious hosts were watching it for the first time.
Fitting with the times, the first episode of the Grand Tour aptly labeled “Past, Present and Future perfectly describes the battle of fuel types happening on our roads today.
Petrol, Hybrid or Electric? Which is best?
The Lamborghini Aventador with is giant fossil fuel burning V12 represents the past, the futuristic and high tech NSX reps the present and the otherworldly Rimac and all 1200 of its horses represent the future.
Yes, the same Rimac Hammond crashed is featured in the very first episode. Mainly because he would be in crutches for the rest of them, and it would stop people from asking too many questions.
Quite honestly the results and ensuing drag race are shocking. All set on a picturesque Swiss background that would make Julie Andrews jealous.
Celebrity Brain Crash is now Celebrity Face off, where the burning question of who is the fastest former talent show judge gets answered on this first episode. Is it the Hoff (David Hasselhoff) or The Voice’s Ricky Wilson?
We get more of our hosts being themselves this season, and the production values are unsurprisingly through the roof. Nowhere else on TV are cars made to feel so special and so relatable.
It's this ability to appeal to the masses, people that might not otherwise care about cars, that makes this show so good.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
