BMW’s new 7 Series is one of the most remarkable cars on the road with cutting edge technology. It’s a flagship vehicle for the German automaker, but many of its features will find their way over the next few years into much less expensive BMWs and even into regular, more affordable cars. Here are some of its standout features that could come soon to a car near you.

Remember when Pierce Brosnan was James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies and he drove his BMW 7 Series with his phone to escape the bad guys? The new 7 Series does that — sort of. You can get out of the car and then let it drive itself into a tight parking spot, using the key fob to start it and shut it off. The car does the steering and avoids all obstacles. No other production car can do this, yet.

All of the car’s functions are controlled by a variety of inputs. There’s the touchscreen at the front, voice controls, the now-conventional i-Controller knob, or a removable tablet for the rear that’s stored in the centre console. With the tablet, you can even control the ambient light colour scheme of the interior, the sunshades, or just use the tablet as a camera. Plus, you can use the device like a conventional remote control to use the TV on the backrest screen.

There’s no need to reach for a button to control the volume of the sound system. A camera under the rear-view mirror detects the movement of your hand, and if you twirl a finger clockwise while pointing at the dash, it will increase the volume. Twirl counterclockwise and it will decrease the sound, or just point two fingers at the screen to mute it quickly.

Everything is adjustable to your taste inside the car, including the smell of the air. Two canisters of fragrance are loaded into a dispenser and then your choice of scent is released through the cabin’s ventilation system to your chosen intensity. Why have that new car smell when you can appreciate the aroma “Naturalness of lush grasses”?

The heating and cooling of the leather seating is adjustable in both intensity and placement, but that’s only the beginning. All seats include full massage functions with a selection of programs, and you can even calibrate the rear seats to provide the “BMW Vitality Program.” This massage system works its way over your entire seated body and rewards you with onscreen stars upon completion.

Choose the long-wheelbase model and the Executive Lounge option so the front passenger seat will slide forward to provide a footrest for the passenger behind. This rear occupant can stretch out completely while the chauffeur does the driving. There’s even a pattern of stars etched on the sunroof for nighttime contemplation. It’s the automotive equivalent of first-class airplane travel.

The 7 Series will drive itself for short periods of time, detecting cars in front and holding to their speed while keeping the car within its lane. It’ll warn you with a red image on the head up display if you’re speeding, or if it’s time to put your hands back on the wheel to resume driving for yourself.
