We’re always a fan of the station wagon, no matter what you call it. And that definitely applies to this one. Mercedes-Benz has taken the CLA four-door coupe, a body style name that doesn’t always make sense, and transformed it. Into the CLA Shooting Brake. Or as we’d label it, the CLA Wagon.
The CLA is a good looking car, even if the four-door coupe name is a little strange. And transforming it into a wagon, sorry, Shooting Brake, does nothing to take away from that. In fact, it adds to it.
This is the second generation of the CLA SB. The first launched in 2015, and no, you didn’t miss it. We didn’t get it in Canada. The new one gets the long hood and compact greenhouse of the sedan then adds that extended roofline. Better for rear-seat access, better for cargo space, and better for looks. Mercedes says it has “muscular shoulders” and “a supplely crouched rear.” Oh my.
It’s 48 mm longer and 53 mm wider than the old CLA SB, at 4,688 and 1,830, respectively, though the total width including the mirrors is actually 33 mm narrower at 1,999. So there’s more space inside but you won’t take the glass off on a narrow road.
The car offers the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with “Hey Mercedes” voice command functionality. Punch the right buttons and it also has the MB Energizing and Energizing Coach features that tweak the seats, lighting, and AC to wake you up. The Coach feature can even link with your fitness wearable to decide how drowsy you are.
The CLA’s top engine will be a 225 hp 2.0L turbo four. The same as the one in the CLA 250 sedan. When the new car arrives in the fall, there will be a load of other gas and diesel engines to go with it.
If you’re wondering how there are diesel options, something Mercedes dropped in Canada, then no, this isn’t confirmation they’re coming back. That’s because once again this CLA Shooting Brake appears to be a Euro-only, or at least a Canada/US no-no, car. We haven’t gotten a confirmation from MB Canada that it’s coming here, but we’re not expecting one.
Which is too bad, because this is a very good looking car. So good looking that we wanted to show it to you, even if we don’t see it on the road. You’re welcome. But hey, at least Mercedes-Benz offers us the C 43 AMG wagon, something that American buyers don’t get.
