OTTAWA — It's not a great way to wake up, but it's definitely better than not waking up at all.

A man who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel woke up submerged in water early Thursday morning. He had driven his car into the Ottawa River.

The 33-year-old from Val-des-Monts drove his car into the river near the intersection of Rue Saint Louis and Rue Jacques-Cartier shortly after 1 a.m., according to the Ottawa Citizen.

He was able to swim to shore and report the incident to police, who arrived on scene shortly afterward.

Gatineau police said they do not believe the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They suspect he fell asleep at the wheel.

The man was not injured, but was taken to hospital to be treated for symptoms of hypothermia.
