Insider Report on Schumacher's stellar career
Insider Report readers may have noticed that I have been very slow to weigh in on Michael Schumacher and the injuries he sustained while skiing.
Insider Report readers may have noticed that I have been very slow to weigh in on Michael Schumacher and the injuries he sustained while skiing with his Son in France over the holidays.
The reason is twofold. First off, I tend to get rather emotional when someone in my small sport is seriously injured or dies. While some have a lot to say in that state, I have a tough time putting together meaningful words. Perhaps more importantly, my views of the seven time World Champion are less than popular at the best of times.
Throughout his career, Schumacher has proven to be a ruthless competitor who often resorted to dirty driving tactics and behaving as if the rules don’t apply to him. When the other shoe dropped and another driver got a bit rough, the seven time Formula 1 World Champion was quick to push officials to penalize the offender. In my eyes, this behaviour is not the mark of a sportsman and a championship is less meaningful without fair play.
All that being said, there is no question that Michael Schumacher was one of the most talented drivers to ever set foot into a Grand Prix car. I have never met the man, but those I know who have tell me that he is a most gracious, respectful and thankful man once a competition has come to an end. As a philanthropist, Schumacher has donated tens of millions of dollars to a variety of charities over the years.
As Schumacher fights for his life in hospital, let’s look back at some of the highlights of his stellar career.
