Following up on the well-received QX Sport Inspiration concept launch at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, Infiniti has moved to the next level and brought it closer to production in the form of the QX50 concept.

It had its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Externally the QX50 Concept is slightly larger than the QX Sport Inspiration in both height and length and represents the latest interpretation of Infiniti’s ‘Powerful Elegance’ design language.

Infiniti describe it as being comprised of taut and muscular lines, giving the QX50 Concept a commanding presence that incorporates a wide, muscular stance that accentuates its versatile capability.

The artistically designed passenger cabin is graciously liveried in premium, authentic materials and features a more modern application of wood, leather and stitching rather than the traditional high gloss woods and soft touch plastics.

As with the QX Sport Inspiration the dashboard is focused on the driver while the centrally mounted touchscreen HMI (human-machine interface) is capable of displaying to all occupants the current status of other technologies in the vehicle as well.

What makes the QX50 Concept special is what is has hidden under its hood – the all-new VC-Turbo 2.0-itre (variable compression turbocharged) four-cylinder engine.

The engine is expected to produce the same power as a V6, but with a 27 per cent gain in fuel efficiency.

It is able to adapt its compression ratio according to driving conditions to deliver optimal levels of performance and efficiency.

The QX50 Concept is giving us a hint of future Infiniti autonomous driving technologies.

Infiniti ensures us that drivers will retain “ultimate control” over the vehicle while “delegating certain elements of driving to the car.”
