In a sudden announcement today, General Motors of Canada Managing Director and President, Steven Carlisle has been named General Motors Senior Vice President and President of Cadillac.

Carlisle is replacing Johan de Nysschen, who is “leaving the company effective immediately” to pursue other interests.

Born in Woodstock, Ontario, Carlisle began his career as an engineering co-op student at GM’s Oshawa truck assembly plant. In the years since, the Ontario native has held a number of senior positions within the company, including posts as Global VP of product planning, VP of U.S. sales and Managing Director in southeast Asia.

Carlisle returned home so-to-speak in 2014 to take the top seat upon Kevin Williams’ retirement.

During his tenure in Canada, Carlisle oversaw the best ever sales years for Buick, GMC and Cadillac as GM grew to boast the top automotive sales in the country in 2017.

“The potential for Cadillac across the globe is incredible and I’m honored to be chosen to be a part of mapping that future,” said Carlisle. “I look forward to building on our current momentum as we continue on our mission to position Cadillac at the pinnacle of luxury.”

Replacing Carlisle at the helm of GM Canada is Australian Travis Hester, who is currently Vice President of Global Product Programs.

Hester also has an engineering background, having started with GM in 1995 as a technical support engineer at GM’s Australian brand Holden. Moving to the United States in 2005, Hester stayed in engineering, holding a variety of positions including chief engineer of the Chevrolet Spark, Buick LaCrosse and the built-in-Oshawa Buick Regal.
