DETROIT, MI: The much-awaited BMW X2 compact CUV bowed at this year’s North American Auto Show in Detroit closing an obvious gap in the brand’s SUV/CUV strategy.

The first-ever, 2018 X2 is packed with the power and technology consumers expect from the brand starting with a 2.0-litre TwinPower (twin turbo) inline four-cylinder engine producing 228 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque that sees it accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

An eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission is coupled to BMW’s xDrive AWD system that routes grip between the front and back axles as required.

For those wanting a more aggressive ride, the M Sport X Package includes the Sport Automatic Transmission with faster up and down shifts.

X2 driving response can be selected by pushing the Dynamics Control button that offers three modes – Comfort, Eco Pro and Sport with the latter giving enhanced powertrain and steering.

Optionally available is the M Sport suspension with stiffer springs, shock tuning and specially adapted anti-roll bars along with the X2 being lowered by 0.4 inches.

While is sits on the same wheelbase of the X1, the X2 is actually 3.2-inches shorter and 2.8-inched lower giving it a chunky, more purposeful look.

If you look closer, the iconic twin kidney BMW grille is different now being wider at the base then the top which is the opposite what has been the case for decades.

It is the first time this treatment has been used on a BMW but it won’t be the last.

Full LED headlights are available as standard for the BMW X2. The bi-LED light for low beam and high beam is extremely bright and effective at illuminating the road.

The standard rear spoiler can be replaced on the M Sport X model with the even larger M Rear Spoiler.

The X2 runs on standard 18-inch, Y-Spoke alloy wheels but 19-inch, Y-Spoke alloys are optional.

Utility was not forgotten with a cargo volume of up to 50.1 cu ft.

A nice touch is standard ambient lighting with the driver able to choose between Orange, Lilac, Mint, Bronze, Blue or White.

The dashboard does away with traditional dials and gauges for Black Panel Technology with a black screen facing the driver where only those instruments chosen by the driver which he/she thinks are relevant are visible when the start button is pushed.

Central to all BMWs is the iDrive controller which is now in its sixth generation using cloud based voice control and optional touchscreen operation for the Control Display which can also be used by the front seat passenger.
