Eye Candy: It's love at first sight for both car and wife

In Chatham Kent, I spied a beautiful metallic-grey 1949 Triumph Roadster Walton recalls. 'It was love at first sight, and said roadster was duly purchased for the princely sum, as I recall, of $300.

The car: 1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster.

The owners: Aline and Michael Walton, Sarnia

The story: In 1959, Michael Walton was serving in the Royal Navy and had just returned to England from Christmas Island, where the British nuclear bombs had been tested.

?In Chatham Kent, I spied a beautiful metallic-grey 1949 Triumph Roadster ? registration No. EFN 100,? Walton recalls. ?It was love at first sight, and said roadster was duly purchased for the princely sum, as I recall, of ?300.

?Shortly after, I was introduced to a young lady who was also serving in the R.N. What do you know? Love at first sight,? he says of his wife, Aline. ?On our second date, in the roadster of course, my proposal was accepted, and we were married six weeks later.?

The roadster, not being a family car, was sold soon after, but Walton kept a picture of it in his photo album. In 2004, he decided to find out if the car still existed by posting an enquiry with the Triumph Roadster Club in England: ?Does EFN 100 still exist??

?I was informed that it did indeed still exist, in England, and was given the name and address of its then-owner,? he says. ?I contacted him and received a thank you, and that was the end of that.

?Or so I thought. Two years later, I received an e-mail from the club archivist (who lives in Australia) that the car was for sale. My brother-in-law was dispatched with instructions to ?buy that car!??

The car was in rough shape, but Walton bought it anyway and had it shipped to his home in Owen Sound, Ont., in 2006.

My brother in-law was right; it did need some work,? Walton says. ?Being a not-really-retired person, the restoration spread over a few years, until finally in 2013, it was safetied, insured and licensed ? looking much the way it did in Chatham in 1959.

?Now I drive it at the least excuse around Sarnia, where I now live, and thoroughly enjoy it,? he concludes. ?Strangely enough, there are only six of these cars in Canada, and two of them are in Sarnia.?
