E-Class Across Asia

In what’s described as an, “exceptional acid test for the new generation of the E-Class,” Mercedes will send 33 of its diesel-powered sedans on a 26-day journey from Paris to Beijing on October 21. Following a route similar to the first transcontinental car race 99 years ago (which took 62 days), the journey will cover some 13,600 kilometres over eight countries. Thirty E 320 CDIs and three E 320 Bluetecs will participate, the latter billed as the world’s cleanest diesel engine. Mercedes claims it consumes up to 40 percent less fuel than comparable gas engines. The 330 drivers, ranging from Benz owners to celebrities, will drive in stages and compete for the lowest possible fuel consumption. Mercedes recently began E-Class production at a new facility in Beijing.
