BMW Gives 530e More Range
A bigger battery adds nearly 50 percent to the car's range
BMW has juiced up the plug-in version of the 5 Series. A bigger battery adds nearly 50 percent to the car’s range and now the rest of the world gets the all-wheel drive version we’ve already had. Though we don’t get the rear-drive version they’ll continue to have on offer.
The boost comes thanks to a new generation of battery cell technology. It’s not physically larger, but the lithium-ion pack can now store more electrons. That raises pack capacity from 9.2 to 12.0 kWh. In a pack that’s stored under the rear seat so that trunk volume is only minimally impacted compared with the standard car. Well, BMW calls it minimal, but plug-in hybrid buyers get 410L of space instead of 530 in the conventional car.
The battery can charge in six hours with a standard plug, or can use a BMW i Wallbox to cut that to three and a half.
The range with that extra power is now up to 66 km. On the rear-drive version. That’s up from 45 km before, giving this latest model a much more practical amount of electric capability. The extra traction of the all-wheel drive version comes with a slightly reduced range figure. Up to 58 km.
Both the 530e and the 530e xDrive use a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo gas engine that makes 184 hp. It’s combined with an electric motor that’s integrated into the eight-speed automatic and puts out 113 hp. That’s a total of 252 hp and 310 lb-ft. BMW says it’ll get the rear-drive version from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds with xDrive taking a tenth longer. Top speed on electric only is 140 km/h. Interestingly, the top speed when operating as a hybrid is only 110. Gas only, it’ll go to 235 km/h.
The plug-in fiver is available with most of the usual BMW options. Like an adaptive suspension to add comfort to your near-silent ride. And Driving Assistant Plus and Parking Assistant Plus driver aids as well as the BMW Live Cockpit digital dash. The 12.3-inch digital display gains some new hybrid-specific info screens, like range, charging status, and location of public charging stations.
BMW says the 530e xDrive is available now, but since it was already available here, we’re not sure when exactly the extra-range version will arrive.
