On December 11, 2017, BMW driving instructors set a new Guinness World Records title for drifting a 2018 BMW M5 for 8 hours straight travelling a distance of 374.1 kms. They set the record at the BMW Performance Center in South Carolina.
This was no easy task! They designed a custom refuelling rig and practised a dual vehicle drift so that they could gas up mid-drift without stopping. Crazy! They had the actual 2018 M5 on display at CES with all the dents and scratches left from a mid-fuelling collision.
With the newly found confidence in their M-series cars, BMW decided to show off drifting with their M3 at CES 2018. They had five M3 vehicles at the show and gave lessons and rides to three people at a time. They drifted figure eights with willing participants non-stop during show hours for four days.
I decided to take a lesson and see what the M3 could do. Check out the video below. Screaming passengers sure made it more interesting.
Ladies and gentlemen, don’t try this at home at your local parking lot. Leave it to the experts, in a controlled setting, because in the hands of the inexperienced, driving like this could be dangerous and will likely result in a ticket that is sure to affect your auto insurance rates.
