Sitting comfortably in the Volkswagen family as the bread-n-butter of its lineup, Tiguan does much of the heavy lifting in terms of sales volume and profits. In fact, it compares pretty well to most of its direct competition in this country, handily outselling machines like the Subaru Forester and Jeep Cherokee in the second quarter of 2021 (it’s still a fraction of the RAV4 which is the beyond-dominant segment king).

VW has decided to give the Tiguan a nip and tuck for 2022, revising its front and rear styling while adding improvements to the interior. There are four trims this year, starting with the Trendline model at $32,995. For this sum, one will find themselves in command of a machine with active driving assists such as autonomous emergency front braking, pedestrian detection, and a side-view assist with rear traffic alert. Combined with an optional third-row seating package for $800, it’s clear the demographic Volkswagen is targeting with the Tiguan.

No matter how much money one spends on this VW crossover, it’ll be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 181 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard in Canada for the 2022 model year, so keep that in mind when cross-shopping its competition to compare starting prices. An 8-speed automatic is leaps and bounds more pleasant than the sad-sack CVTs which are depressingly common in this segment.

There are a few comfort omissions in the Trendline worth noting including the absence of a power tailgate, power adjustable seats, and dual-zone climate control. However, the steering wheel and cloth front seats are heated, as are the side mirrors and washer nozzles. This is handy for our Canadian winters. There is no shortage of USB ports and 12V outlets, though wireless charging is not included on this base model. Infotainment also gets a downgrade on this least expensive Tiguan.

The lack of any paint selection off the greyscale is irritating, but at least all four options are no charge items. With that in mind, choosing a shade containing a bit of metallic flake is a no brainer. Those are 17-inch alloys wrapped in 215/65 tires, and the blacked-out window trim is shared with the more expensive R-Line Black edition.

What We’d Choose

Making a $3,800 walk to the Comfortline trim is not a small decision, since that amount of money will add at least $60 per month to the family budget depending on financing terms. However, the leap will bring a better infotainment system (with a larger screen and satellite radio capability), marriage-friendly climate controls, wireless charging, and privacy glass. It does ditch the cloth seats, which can be a deal breaker for some customers.

If you can live without satellite radio – and remember to bring your charging cord on each morning’s commute – the base Trendline represents a pretty good value in the new-for-’22 Tiguan lineup.
