A somewhat alarming report out of the U.S. says automakers have had to increase the width of their vehicle’s seats to accommodate grossly enlarging North American rear ends. The article from USA Today says that most of the domestics are already wise to the bloated bottoms, and now the import manufacturers are getting onboard. Honda reported adding 3/4 of an inch to the new Civic’s seats and the Mercedes R-Class has seats 1/2 an inch wider than its M-Class SUV sibling. Ford is even using a model of a rotund man in its computer-based design programs. The report quotes a study saying some 62 percent of American adults are overweight.
