At the recent British International Motor Show in London, Mazda unveiled an MX-5 Miata that features a retractable hard top. Since its launch in 1990, and through subsequent revisions in ’99 and ’06, the MX-5 has only offered easy-to-use, manual-folding soft tops. Aside from the improved security and all-weather capability that panel tops provide, insiders say Mazda made the move because more competitors offer them, and people seem to like them. Though Mazda says the new roof has been designed to be light and space efficient, the new roof and its electrics do increase curb weight and reduce trunk volume. Why not simply build a real coupe instead?
