Last week at the Montreal International Auto Show, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada took the next step toward the 2023 Canadian Car and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards. 12 category winners were announced, with 11 different manufacturers moving one step closer to the two top awards which will be announced at the Toronto show next month.

This year Hyundai was the only brand with two category wins. The Hyundai Elantra N was voted the best Sports Performance car and the Ioniq 5 Best EV in Canada for 2023. Part of the same automaker group, Genesis was awarded Best Large Premium Car in Canada for 2023 with the G90, and the Kia Telluride was voted Best Large Utility Vehicle in Canada for 2023. This is the third year Telluride has won its category.

Toyota and Lexus both bring home category wins for the Corolla Cross and NX in their respective classes, with the Volvo XC90 returning as Best Large Premium Utility Vehicle in Canada for 2023. The XC90 also won that award back in 2016.

The Mazda 3 was voted Best Small Car in Canada for 2023, the third year for that model to win that award, snatching it back from last year's winner, the Honda Civic. The Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Maverick, BMW i4, and Ram 1500 all had class wins.

More than 1,700 ballots were cast by AJAC voting members located from Vancouver to Halifax. The jury includes some of our own regular contributors as well as leading professional automotive journalists from across Canada.

AJAC plans to reveal the two overall winners, the vehicles declared 2023 Canadian Car of the Year and 2023 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year at the Canadian International Auto Show in February.

The announcement and awards presentation happens on February 16th at the Auto Show, and there will be a display of the winning vehicles and the other overall finalists during the running of the show.
