Road trips are great, but guess what’s even better? A road trip with an exciting destination to look forward to! The summer and early fall is a great time to pack up the car and spend the day exploring new places and attractions. These ten road trips are some of my personal favourites or destinations that my family and friends have traveled to. For complete driving directions please do additional research or ask your friendly GPS to help you out. Many of these trips have multiple ways to drive there, so choose what route is best for you. Each trip is packed with adventures around every corner.

 	<li><strong><a href="http://prince-edward-county.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Prince Edward County</a>: </strong></li>
</ol>
I hear from friends this is the “IT” place to be - and it’s only two hours from Toronto in South Eastern Ontario. There are five entry points to the County. Take exit 522 for Wooler Road / Country Road 40 toward Trenton. Many families I know have taken their kids to the Sandbanks Provincial Park and absolutely loved it. There are three sandy beaches, sandbars, and coastal sand dunes. Definitely bring a pail and shovel! You can also hike along the trails, swim in the shallow water, go boating, biking and even camp for the night! If you have time check out their theatre scene, museums, studios, galleries, or go shopping for antiques or the latest trends! And if it’s an adult only journey, you will have your choice of 40 awesome wineries to choose from. (Have a designated driver!)

Tried, tested and true, my son and I have been traveling to Niagara Falls annually and are never disappointed. From Toronto it’s about a 90-minute drive. Take the Queen Elizabeth Way and follow signs for Niagara/East Hamilton/Fort Erie. We love the excitement of Clifton Hill such as mini golfing with dinosaurs, the massive SkyWheel with spectacular views, the little souvenir shops and the crazy wax museums and haunted houses! You will have no shortage of hotels, restaurants or activities to choose from. We also love riding the Maid of the Mist in our rain gear. Definitely bring your camera!

Located in the Waterloo Region it’s about 90 from Toronto, on Highway 401, Exit # 278 Highway 8 Kitchener. St. Jacob’s County is home to Canada’s largest Farmers Market that is open year round, where you can pick up fresh pastries, bread, fruit, veggies, flowers and maple syrup (How Canadian!). You can also browse through original artwork, jewelry, and various craft vendors. St. Jacob’s is a great place to spend the weekend and you can choose from hotels, bed and breakfasts or camping!

Multiple friends of mine with kids drive to Barrie to enjoy the water, beaches, and parks in warmer months. Barrie is located in Central Ontario on the Western Shore of Lake Simcoe. We love going to Barrie because it’s not too far yet it has a totally different vibe than Toronto. There are several ways to drive to Barrie; one route is the 400 North and takes just over an hour. If you get hungry and didn’t pack a picnic lunch, check out the delicious Boon Burger - Canada’s first all vegan burger restaurant. <a href="http://boonburger.ca">http://boonburger.ca</a> - located at 112 Dunlop Street East.

 	<li>Bradford: Wishing Well Sanctuary</li>

Why go to Bradford you ask? For the 66 rescued farm animals of course! <em>The</em> <em>Wishing Well Sanctuary</em> is our favourite way to spend the day <a href="http://www.wishingwellsanctuary.org">http://www.wishingwellsanctuary.org</a> We love hugging the sheep and goats, patting the pigs and feeding the cows. All of these animals have been rescued from death or abusive situations. It is also a center for humane education, healing and personal growth through seminars and workshops, all which share the goal of promoting emotional well being and peace. It’s a private residence so you can’t just drop in; there are specific visitor days. Sanctuary tours are held on the last Saturday of every month and the second Sunday of each month from March through November. It’s about an hour drive from Toronto on Highway 400; Wishing Well is located at 2710 10th Line on the North Side – look for the Wishing Well Sign!

 	<li>Vineland:</li>
</ol>
&nbsp;

Vineland is a community within the Niagara Region and the Town of Lincoln and just over an hour drive from Toronto. The QEW/403 towards Hamilton and then Beamsville will get you there. Vineland is known for the wineries, vineyards, orchards and restaurants that feature local produce. If you want to check out Vineland Estates Winery this may be one of those road trips without the kids. <a href="http://www.vineland.com">http://www.vineland.com</a> The winery is open all year and there are tours of the vineyard, wine tastings, seminars, historic sites, restaurants, stone houses and stunning views. It’s beautiful to go in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

Muskoka is known for it’s adventurous yet relaxing cottage life. From Toronto, take the highway 401 East to highway 400 north towards Barrie and Orillia, and it’s about a two-hour drive. Once you are there if you want to enjoy scenic drives there are specific driving tours such as Muskoka’s rugged coast or Muskoka’s heart. Or if you have reached your final destination take your pick of things to do; there are beaches, boat cruises, waterfalls, golfing, biking, entertainment and museums. If it’s a special celebration and money is no object, you can splurge and go to the spa – there are plenty to choose from. There are also enough restaurants to guarantee you will find something that suits your palate! Many people choose to stay overnight at family friendly lodges, bed and breakfasts, cottage resorts or hotels.

There are multiple ways to drive North to Collingwood, such as highway 400 towards Wasaga Beach or Airport Road North. Choose your route depending on the time of year you are traveling and if you prefer scenery or the highway. Collingwood is home to some great parks, an arts and culture scene, museums, relaxing waterfront, a conservation area; and the Collingwood Scenic Caves Nature Preserve that is great for visitors of all ages and known as one of Canada’s great natural wonders. <a href="http://www.sceniccaves.com">http://www.sceniccaves.com</a> A friend suggested checking out the Elvis Festival that runs for a few days each summer – something to look forward to in 2016!

This national park is located in Essex County in Southwestern Ontario. The driving directions are complex so please refer to the “How To Get There” section of the website. My adventurous parents took a road trip to Point Pelee this summer and because it’s about a four-hour drive, they decided to stay for several days in nearby Leamington. <a href="http://www.leamington.ca/en/index.asp">http://www.leamington.ca/en/index.asp</a> In Point Pelee you can go hiking, walk along the boardwalk, bird watch, rent bikes or canoes, swim and enjoy a picnic on the beach. Point Pelee is the southernmost point of main land in Canada and you can ride a shuttle to the very tip. It’s a destination my father has always wanted to visit and he took these photos of the boardwalk going through the marsh and the rocks which are a few kilometers south at the farthest point.

 	<li><strong> Brampton / Tree Top Trekking</strong></li>

The most recent road trip we took was to Tree Top Trekking <a href="http://treetoptrekking.com/en/brampton/">http://treetoptrekking.com/en/brampton/</a> in Brampton (reservations are required). It’s about an hour drive from Toronto. Located at Heart Lake Conservation Area, drive along highway 401 and exit at Sandlewood Road. Follow the signs to Heart Lake Road and turn north on Heart Lake Road to # 10818. If you love eco-adventures as much as we do, this is the place to be (Kids must be 9 years old so this was the first year my son was old enough). You can easily spend the day exploring the forest doing climbing challenges, log bridges, obstacles and zip lining. We packed a lunch and spent the afternoon there. Our favourite part was the zip line over Heart Lake – absolutely breathtaking – and you will feel like a flying bird!

Top Ten Road Trips to Escape the City this Labour Day

<strong>With winter here it’s a crucial time of year to remind drivers that distracted driving is illegal and dangerous.</strong>

According to Canadian Automobile Association (<a href="https://www.caa.ca/distracted-driving/distracted-driving-laws-in-canada/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CAA</a>), distracted driving has become a national issue and all provinces and territories in Canada have hand held cell phone legislation except for Nunavut.

The fines vary in amount and can reach $1000 dollars or higher in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. In <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/distracted-driving-needs-to-stop-now/">Ontario</a> it is illegal to “operate hand-held communication and electronic entertainment devices while you’re driving” as well as view display screens that are not related to driving.

Here are seven additional things you need to know about distracted driving.
<h3><strong> Examples of Hand Held Devices</strong></h3>
As new technology is introduced this list is sure to get updated. But in the meantime Ontario lists examples of hand held devices to include cell phones, smart phones, laptops, DVD players, iPods, MP3 players, and a GPS.

This means you cannot program your GPS while driving, you can’t search for a movie for the kids to watch on the DVD player, and you most definitely can’t be texting, dialing, or scrolling through contacts on any hand held device.
<h3><strong> Nope - Not even at a Red Light</strong></h3>
Some drivers are misinformed and think they can text or dial when stopped at a red light. This is illegal and dangerous. The only exception to this is if you are calling the police, fire department, or emergency medical services. If you are not calling for emergency help do not pick up your phone unless you have pulled over, away from traffic, or legally parked.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation wants drivers to keep in mind that accidents don’t just occur when cars are in motion, it’s also the drivers that are stopped at red lights and using their phones which distracts them from the light cycle and advance turn signals.

<h3><strong> High Fines for Breaking the Law</strong></h3>
As previously mentioned, fines can reach as high as $1000 dollars, and up to $1200 dollars in Prince Edward Island. In British Columbia the first offence is $543, but your second offence (should you still not have learned your lesson) is $888.

In Ontario the fine for distracted driving is $400 and up to $1000 dollars if you receive a summons or fight your ticket in court. There will also be three demerit points directly applied to your driving record and if you are convicted of distracted driving there are escalating sanctions starting with a 30-day license suspension.
<h3><strong> Hands Free Devices are still Distracting</strong></h3>
Having common sense while driving is also important. Multitasking can be very dangerous while driving and looking at a screen even if you are not holding or touching it can have serious consequences.

Any distraction no matter how small it may appear at the time can be potentially dangerous when driving a car. Save your hands free devices for use outside the car as they are distracting you from paying attention to the road conditions, other vehicles around you, and traffic signs.

<h3><strong> Eat Before you Leave or Once you Arrive</strong></h3>
Eating while driving is also a distraction and can lead to accidents. Besides, you risk making yourself and your car a mess.

Consider stopping at a café, restaurant, or rest stop to enjoy a picnic when taking long road trips instead of eating in the car.
<h3><strong> Mood also Affects your Driving </strong></h3>
As Wheels pointed out in this article about <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/guides/7-tips-to-deal-with-road-rage/">road rage</a>, it is important to stay calm while driving. If you are angry it’s ideal to wait before getting behind the wheel of a car.

Take some deep breaths, take a moment to meditate and take your mind to your happy place. It’s better to arrive a few minutes late to your destination than risk driving while angry, extremely stressed out, or under emotional duress.
<h3><strong> Books, Newspapers, Magazines – also Distracting</strong></h3>
Just because books, newspapers and magazines are not electronic does not make them safe to read while driving, stalled in traffic, or stopped at a red light. Even reading a paper map while driving takes your eyes away from the road in front of you and can have fatal consequences.

When you are behind the wheel you need to be alert and focused so you will see the unexpected child running after the ball on the road, the pedestrian walking their dog across the street, and the cyclist coming around the corner. If you are busy doing something else your concentration is not where it should be – on the road and the people and cars around you.

Distracted Driving – What You Need To Know

<strong>The history of Kingston dates back hundreds of years when it was Canada’s first capital city in 1841. </strong> But due to Kingston’s location on the water and to avoid being attacked, the capital was relocated in 1844.

Kingston was first settled in the 1600’s on First Nation lands named Katarokwi. Kingston is now known as the “limestone city” due to the local limestone that was used to construct the magnificent heritage buildings.

The bustling culture packed city is located on the eastern end of Lake Ontario and less than three hours drive from Toronto along the 401 East towards Coburg.

My friend and I were excited to be driving our spiffy rental car, a white <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/car-reviews/vw-golf-offers-comfort-in-a-reliable-hatch/">Volkswagen Golf</a> complete with that unbeatable new car smell.

With fresh cups of coffee snugly in our drink holders and a flickering GPS stuck to the dashboard we began our journey. When we decided to take this road trip it was a given that we would stop in Colborne at the famous <a href="http://www.thebigapple.ca/">Big Apple</a> for a piece of delicious pie. (Vegan and gluten free options are available). They are located at 262 Orchard Drive just off Highway 401 at exit 497 – look for the massive smiling apple at the side of the road.

When no more pie could possibly be eaten we continued on our journey towards Kingston along the 401’s winding roads and stunning views set against the backdrop of Lake Ontario.

Kingston has many hotels to choose from downtown and we stayed at the <a href="http://www.fourpointskingston.com/">Four Points Sheraton Kingston</a> on King Street with a pretty view of the lake from our room.

There are many tasty restaurants nearby including the trendy and popular <a href="http://www.woodenheads.com/">Wooden Heads Gourmet Pizza</a>. Our hotel was also close to <a href="http://www.forthenry.com/">Fort Henry</a>, a must-visit historic attraction. The original Fort dates back to the War of 1812, however it looked entirely different back then. The restoration took place between 1832 and 1837 to protect the Naval dockyard, the entrance to the Rideau Canal, and also the town of Kingston. The fort re-opened as a museum in 1938 and this historic site attracts visitors from around the world in all seasons looking to learn about this part of Canada. The show is a tribute to the original garrison and includes drums, military music, drills and a simulated battle complete with the latest technology for an action packed event.

Kingston is famous for many historic things, one of them being the Kingston Penitentiary. And what better way to bond with a friend than a journey to prison? “KP” or “The Pen” as it’s commonly referred to, was Canada’s oldest and most notorious maximum-security prison. KP closed their strong gloomy gates in 2013 and now this national historic site offers <a href="http://www.kingstonpentour.com/">guided tours</a> to the public.

To say I was a bit nervous to explore the hallways and cells of what was a maximum security prison was an understatement. I can’t begin to even imagine what it was like for people entering the prison for real. Popular television shows like <em>Orange is the New Black</em> and <em>Wentworth</em> have brought fictional jail scenes into our homes, but it’s quite different to actually stand in the same room where convicted felons once roamed.

The first six inmates arrived at KP in June 1835.  The facility consisted of one large limestone cellblock with 154 cells. In the early days of the prison opening, children as young as eight-years-old were also incarcerated here. According to our tour guide Rick, and former KP guard of 17 years, the eight-year-old child’s only “crime” was to steal a loaf of bread. Rick also told us about violent prison riots, such as the famous revolt in April 1971 where six prison guards were taken hostage by the inmates.

I got chills up my spine when I walked into a tiny cell and closed the clanking metal door behind me. I tried to imagine what it must have been like for inmates in the segregation units that were locked up for 23 hours a day. As we continued outside for the next portion of the tour a large gray cloud appeared and cold wet rain fell from the damp sky, as if on cue. We continued walking around the gated jail and learned about the prison’s educational programs for inmates, substance abuse program, the kitchen, the hospital, and the Aboriginal Grounds.

KP tours start again in May and book up fast so it is advisable to arrange tickets in advance. Proceeds from ticket sales help support local tourism and 50% of the money goes to assist youth programs through the United Way of Kingston.

Directly across the street from the prison is the <a href="http://www.penitentiarymuseum.ca/">Penitentiary Museum</a>, which happens to be the former Warden’s residence. During our visit we spoke with volunteer staff about inmates daring escapes and what life was like for them inside. Admission to this unique museum is by donation.

In keeping with the historical theme of our journey, the next day we set out to find antique treasures. The outdoor <a href="http://www.kingstonantiquemarket.ca/">Kingston Sunday Antique Market</a> opens again for the season in April. It’s located in Market Square on the site of Canada’s oldest marketplace that began over 27 years ago. If you are looking for old books, records, and trinkets of all kinds, you will enjoy rummaging through the vendor’s goodies.

After bargaining for old treasures we walked down to the waterfront. It was still chilly when we were there, but in the spring and summer months the Kingston waterfront is bustling with activities. You can take a boat cruise or tour or simply go for a leisurely walk along the 8 km waterfront pathway that connects to the downtown core.

Other historical adventures you can have in Kingston are a tour of City Hall, Bellevue House, the Murney Tower, the Maclachlan Woodworking Museum, and the Pump House Steam Museum. Kingston may no longer be the capital of Canada, but it is definitely the place to be to explore Canada’s rich cultural history. If you want to keep driving after Kingston, <a href="http://www.parks.on.ca/attractions/skywood-eco-adventure-park/">Skywood Eco Adventure</a> is located about 45 minutes east along the beautiful and scenic 1000 Islands Parkway, and is Canada’s biggest zip line and aerial adventure park.

<strong>If you drive on busy city streets during rush hour it’s quite likely you have been the unlucky recipient of road rage.</strong> Maybe you did something to offend another driver, or maybe you didn’t, but as long as you make the decision to stay calm hopefully whatever situation you find yourself in, it won’t escalate. It is important to stay calm when driving, after all you are controlling a machine weighing thousands of pounds. But <em>you</em> are also in control of your responses and reactions while driving, and it’s crucial to make good ones. Read on for some tips and tricks to help you deal with unfortunate road rage.
<h3><strong>Use your horn only when necessary</strong></h3>
What may sound like a cute little “beep beep” to you may sound like a booming fog horn to another driver, so don’t overuse your horn. A smile and a polite wave can go a long way in the busy rush hour.

<h3><strong>Try not to tailgate</strong></h3>
Nobody likes a tailgater, so do your best not to be one.  Tailgating is dangerous and can lead to accidents – practice the two second rule when driving behind other drivers.

<strong>Here are a few other tips:</strong>

∙<em> Don’t block the passing lane or the right turn lane.</em>

<em>∙ Don’t cut off other drivers.</em>

<em>∙ It should go without saying, but obscene gestures and screaming at other drivers is not helpful and could lead to another driving getting even angrier.</em>

<em>∙ Resist the desire to retaliate if you get cut off while driving.</em>

<em>∙ Don’t block traffic.</em>

<em>∙ If a driver is behaving aggressively, let them pass you.</em>

<em>∙ If you encounter a driver with road rage, do not make eye contact with them, and do not try yell or scream back, it can escalate quickly.</em>

<h3><strong>Be a kind and considerate driver</strong></h3>
A little driving compassion goes a long way. Showing compassion to others promotes peace and forgiveness, and this positive behavior will help keep our streets safe and have a domino affect towards others.
<h3><strong>Be prepared</strong></h3>
If you are the type of person that is easily upset by other drivers on the road acknowledge this and be prepared for all situations. Try listening to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1OsBuvVvmM">relaxing music</a> while stuck in traffic or have an easy to eat snack available such as a granola bar so you don’t get <em>hungry</em>. Allow extra time getting to your destination if you know there will be traffic. Of course there are situations when you are running late and it feels like you are hitting every red light – but keep in mind getting upset about being late isn’t going to get you to your final destination any faster.

<h3><strong>Don’t take it personally</strong></h3>
Some things are simply out of your control, and this includes the actions of other drivers on the road. As the famous expression and the title of Richard Carlson’s book explains; <a href="https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/dont-sweat-the-small-stuff/9780786881857-item.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff…and it’s all small stuff”</a>. Don’t let the negative actions of others destroy your own inner peace. (This is a great book to read for life, not just before a long drive through traffic.)
<h3><strong>Stay calm</strong></h3>
If the world around you is out of control you need to try extra hard to remain calm. If you experience road rage and abusive drivers, if you are able to do so safely, pull over to the side of the road until you are calmer. Common signs to look for in yourself to signal you need a break from driving are an elevated heart rate, muscle tension, and headaches. Chances are if you are plotting ways to seek revenge on another driver, you are not calm. Do your best to prevent your own anger from escalating by doing <a href="https://www.drweil.com/health-wellness/body-mind-spirit/stress-anxiety/breathing-three-exercises/">relaxing breathing techniques</a> such as deep breathing, or practice your own form of mindful meditation as long as it does not interfere with your ability to stay focused on the road.
<h3><strong>Take precautions</strong></h3>
Worst case scenario and you see an aggressive driver getting out of their car coming towards you, roll up your windows, lock your car doors immediately and call the police as soon as it is safe to do so. Unfortunately in some rare cases, road rage escalates into physical violence. Do not get out of your car to engage with this person.  If they start following you in their car it is advisable to take a detour to a safe zone such as somewhere crowded with security cameras, or drive towards the nearest police station - do not drive home or to work. But hopefully if you stay cool, calm, and collected this will help to de-escalate someone else’s temper and prevent an unfortunate road rage situation from getting out of control.

<strong>It’s definitely no secret that Canada is turning 150 years old this year.</strong> So what better way to celebrate our rich history, diverse culture, and unique provinces and territories than by exploring all that the Great White North has to offer?

Canada united as a Nation in 1867 and since then has become a country that people from around the world love to explore. These seven destinations are just a starting point when it comes to discovering all that Canada has to offer for both visitors and citizens.

You can literally walk on the bottom of the ocean floor for three hours before and until three hours after low tide.

Bring a camera to capture the beauty and wear waterproof footwear so you can sink your feet deep into the wet spongy sand.

<h3><strong>North Vancouver – British Columbia</strong></h3>

Daring visitors can experience the thrilling Cliffwalk, described as a heart-stopping Cliffside journey that winds through the rainforest along suspended walkways that jut out from a granite cliff.

With the warmer weather finally here it’s the perfect time for a road trip to Niagara Falls. The Canadian side of the falls is about an hour and a half drive along the QEW from Toronto. It could easily qualify to be the 8<sup>th</sup> wonder of the world, as the rushing water flowing from the Niagara River averages approximately 4 million cubic feet of water every minute – bring a rain jacket to keep dry from the mist! The Niagara Escarpment area that surrounds the falls contains exceptional geological features that were formed thousands of years ago and is worthy of a visit.

<strong>Must try Adventure:</strong> Hop aboard the <a href="https://www.cliftonhill.com/attractions/maid-of-the-mist" target="_blank">Maid of the Mist</a> to hear the crashing waves of the American and Horseshoe Falls for a 30 minute exhilarating ride.

<h3><strong>Lake Louise – Alberta</strong></h3>

If you love hiking up mountains, exploring forests, and paddling across lakes, you will feel right at home. The mountain destination of Banff &amp; Lake Louise is situated along the Trans Canada highway that winds through the Canadian Rockies.

<strong>Must try Adventure: </strong>Ride the <a href="https://www.banfflakelouise.com/gondolas" target="_blank">Lake Louise sightseeing gondola</a> for a birds eye view of the Victoria Glacier at 6,850 feet and learn about the history and wildlife at Lake Louise, you may even spot a grizzly bear roaming through the woods.

Seven Fabulous Destinations for a Canada 150 Road Trip

<strong>According</strong> to a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/20/fashion/teenagers-driving-parents.html?_r=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times article</a>, American teenagers aged 16 and 17 years involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents outweighed death by suicide, cancer, and other accidents. Here in Canada the statistics are also pretty grim for teenage drivers. <a href="https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/tp-tp15145-1201.htm#s33" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Transport Canada</a> reveals, “Young drivers 16 to 24 years of age continue to be at higher risk of being killed in motor vehicle collisions per distance traveled than all other age groups”.

Statistics posted by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) disclose that motor vehicle crashes are the <a href="http://madd.ca/pages/programs/youth-services/statistics-links/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leading cause of death</a> among teenagers. They state that alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in 55% of the crashes between 16 – 25 year olds. Furthermore, according to MADD, “In nearly two-thirds of the alcohol-related multiple vehicle crashes, it was the fatally injured teen driver who had been drinking and not the other drivers”.

<a href="https://www.caa.ca/reality-crashes-for-teens-and-parents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CAA</a> reports there is a new campaign that will act as a starting point to launch conversations between teenagers and parents about how dangerous it is to drive while under the influence of drugs. Parents are encouraged to create a custom video through Drug Free Kids with their campaign <a href="https://thecallthatcomesafter.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Call That Comes After</a>, an intense yet effective way to send your kids a message about the dangers of high driving.

There are many helpful organizations that encourage and teach young drivers how to be safe on the road and the dangers of drugs and alcohol. <a href="http://www.osaid.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving</a> (OSAID) has 300 chapters and reaches over 30,000 students every year and addresses safety on the roads through education and awareness. This organization is a great resource and a positive way for teenagers to get involved in networking and inspiring their peers not to drive while impaired.

Once you, as parents or caregivers, are ready to let your teenager drive your car, assuming of course they have passed their driving test with flying colours and they are insured on your vehicle, here are a few other boundaries you may want to set before letting them get behind the wheel.
<h4><strong>Drive with them</strong></h4>
∙ Many parents/caregivers will feel more comfortable driving with their teen before allowing them to go out on their own. It’s the perfect opportunity for a family road trip – with your child at the wheel.
<h4><strong>Discuss who pays for gas</strong></h4>
∙ The last thing you want is to get in your car to drive to work only to discover there is not enough gas to get you there. Ensure the new eager driver in your home is familiar with whatever gas rules you want to incorporate, such as always keeping the tank 1/3 full, and that they must contribute financially to filling it up.
<h4><strong>No cell phone use while driving</strong></h4>
∙ Of course this should go without saying, after all it is extremely dangerous and illegal to <strong><a href="https://www.ontario.ca/page/distracted-driving" target="_blank" rel="noopener">text while driving</a></strong>, but it doesn’t hurt to go over “<a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/eradicate-distracted-driving/"><strong>distracted driving</strong></a>” with them thoroughly, since chances are if they are driving your car they also have a cell phone in their possession.
<h4><strong>No passengers until you approve</strong></h4>
∙ Some parents/caregivers have a “<em>no passengers</em>” rule until they are comfortable their teenagers are responsible, other parents limit the number of passengers at any one time.
<h4><strong>Have an emergency plan</strong></h4>
∙ It’s always best to be prepared - discuss what to do in case of a driving emergency such as an accident or extreme weather conditions. Knowing you are there for them can help give teenagers the confidence and reassurance they need to be safe on the road.

What to consider before Letting your Teenager Drive your Car

<strong>The arrival of the spring equinox brings bicycle-riding season.</strong> In March, Toronto hosted the <a href="https://www.bicycleshowtoronto.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">International Bicycle Show</a> where bicycle lovers learned about the latest products on the market. There were over 175 exhibitors making it the world’s largest bicycle consumer show. If you plan on biking in the city this year read on for the latest tips, gear, and insights for a safe season.
<h3><strong>Get a bike tune up</strong></h3>
If you are a biking pro and can tune up your bike that’s great, but if not it’s important to take your bike in for a professional tune up at the start of biking season. During the tune up they will clean the chain, apply lube, adjust your brake system, possibly replace the pads, check out the cable tension, pedals, steering, and of course the wheels, to get you spinning along in no time.

<h3><strong>Get the safety gear</strong></h3>
Staying safe on the road includes safety gear. First and foremost make sure you have a good bike helmet. There are many styles to choose from, but most important is making sure to pick one that has the appropriate certifications usually labeled with a sticker containing CSA, EN, ASTM, CSPC, or Snell. CSPC is by far the most common today and most helmets sold in Canada will have at least one of these certifications. Once you have a protective helmet in your favourite colour and style, you should also invest in a loud bell, a good side mirror, wheel reflectors, reflective bike strips and clothing for night riding, and even headlights and taillights for visibility and to let drivers and pedestrians know where you are.

<h3><strong>Beware of potholes, fast opening car doors, texting pedestrians</strong></h3>
In other words, when biking in the city there is lots to look out for. Potholes that did not exist the year before now loom in front of your tires. Also be on the look out for pedestrians that are not paying attention because they are texting and walking with their eyes glued to a screen.  And of course, you don’t want to get “doored”. Take extra precautions and look ahead for cars that have just pulled into a parking spot and are about to open their door in your path. Unfortunately it is all too common for even experienced cyclists to have a car door slam into them while riding in the city.

<h3><strong>Get a good bike lock</strong></h3>
This should go without saying, yet every year bikes are stolen. Of course it is not the fault of the bike rider, however it’s important to do everything you can so this doesn't happen to you. Don’t use a cable lock as they can be easily snipped. Hardened metal U-locks are an ideal way to keep your bike safe, and it’s actually recommended to use multiple smaller locks or a combination of a U-lock and a chain to secure other parts of the bike.

What to know for City Biking Season

<strong>South Carolina is one of our favourite destinations and our visits always include a road trip to explore a nearby town.</strong> Our home base is usually sunny Myrtle Beach and we never run out of fun things to do and explore. This ocean town is ideal for families as there are endless activities, family friendly accommodations, delicious dining options, a trendy boardwalk with adorable shops, and of course boundless water sports like banana boats, jet skis, and parasailing.

Over the years, Myrtle Beach trips with my son Noah, have included driving to <strong><a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/road-trip-myrtle-beach-to-the-seaside-town-of-murrells-inlet/">Murrell’s Inlet</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.wheels.ca/road-trips/myrtle-beach-to-conway/">Conway</a></strong>, and this time we decided to take a road trip to Georgetown for the day. Georgetown County, the third-oldest city in South Carolina, is located on the Sampit River about an hour-long scenic drive along US Highway 17. This highway is a major artery that goes through the large stretch of east coast beaches known as the Grand Strand

Georgetown is also the halfway point if you are driving from Myrtle Beach to Charleston, and in fact highway 17 will take you all the way there if you want to keep driving. Georgetown is a charming waterfront community with a rich history dating back hundreds of years. It’s a quaint place to enjoy some shopping, dining, and exploring.

Our friend picked us up in a shiny <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/car-reviews/2014-fiat-500l-less-fun-and-funky-but-way-more-functional/">FIAT 500 L</a> so we could travel in style.

On route we passed a popular state park with campgrounds that in the summer months start to resemble little cities with homey RV’s and pitched tents. Halfway to Georgetown, around Murrell’s Inlet, it started pouring rain and it became obvious why there are so many retention ponds in the area. The lush green trees on either side of the road flourish with the rain and sun and make for a beautiful scenic drive.

In typical South Carolina style, by the time our cozy FIAT got us to Georgetown the rain had completely stopped. Just south of Georgetown is <a href="http://hopsewee.com/">Hopsewee Plantation</a> and our first stop on this road trip. This National Historic Landmark was built before the American Revolutionary War and dates back to 1740. It was a former rice plantation and the birthplace Thomas Lynch Jr., one of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence. The first crop of rice arrived in coastal South Carolina around 1685 during the Colonial Period, and the area became the largest producer of rice in the United States.

The Hopsewee Plantation is now a private residence with tours open to the public to view the historic house, antique furniture, and the land surrounding the old building. Hopsewee is an ideal place to learn about traditional <a href="http://hopsewee.com/tour-historic-southern-plantation.html#hopsewee-sweetgrass-basket-workshop">sweetgrass basket weaving</a> and you can take a hands on workshop with the lovely and talented Ms. Vera Manigault.

This South Carolina Lowcountry tradition dates back to the 1700’s when sweetgrass baskets were brought by West African slaves to the United States. Vera tells us that back then all plantations had a basket maker. She smiles and says, “I learned mostly from my great aunt how to make baskets”. She patiently shows Noah how to weave the authentic straw into a masterpiece.

Vera must first collect the material to make these baskets, which is proving to be more difficult these days. As South Carolina’s coastal islands are becoming more developed by gated resort communities it’s harder to gain access to the materials as public access is often denied. Sweetgrass baskets are made from natural materials such as marsh bulrush, longleaf pine needles and sweetgrass.

Vera’s creativity in making her baskets is reflected in the colour she is able to weave into them using natural dyes. The outcome is stunning Colorful Baskets that she sells along the side of the road when she is not busy teaching workshops at Hopsewee. Vera is a ninth generation weaver and Gullah descendant from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Back in the car we continue driving through historic Georgetown and our next stop is the <a href="http://www.kaminskimuseum.org/">Kaminski House Museum</a>.

This fancy old colonial home built on a bluff overlooks the Sampit River and is very peaceful. It was originally built in the 1760’s and renovated after World War II. It’s furnished with 18<sup>th</sup> and 19<sup>th</sup> century English and American furniture and stunning artwork. Since it was constructed during the reign of King George III of Great Britain it is considered a Georgian design and people from all over travel to Front Street in Georgetown to visit the museum. It has been open to the public since 1973 and teaches visitors from around the world about the history of Georgetown.

If you feel the need to balance all this history with a modern flair and some shopping, consider stopping in <a href="http://www.townofpawleysisland.com/">Pawleys Island</a> on the way back to Myrtle Beach. Of course like many small towns Pawleys Island also has a rich history. In the early 1700’s the families of rice planters that owned plantations settled in Pawleys Island. Today there are still 12 original residences in the historic district. It’s a laid back casual town with beaches, sand dunes, and the famous rope hammocks.

Pawleys is great for local shopping at boutiques for one of a kind treasures.  When we arrived at the <a href="http://www.thehammockshops.com/">Hammock Shops Village</a> Noah eagerly tested out several unique rope hammocks while I browsed through shops looking at colourful baseball hats, woven carpets, jewelry, sarongs, handbags, funky beachwear, and artisan made artwork.

At the Hammock Weavers Pavilion, founded by a brilliant riverboat captain in the 1800’s, visitors can learn the art of authentic hammock weaving and place an order for a one of a kind hammock to bring home and swing on at their leisure.

The drive back to Myrtle Beach from the Hammocks Shop Village is just over half an hour. The route takes you past Litchfield by the Sea, Murrell’s Inlet, and Surfside Beach along highway 17, all these towns are great to stop in for a meal and a chat with locals. Myrtle Beach is a perfect family destination with an average year round temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and lots of sunny days to explore the 100km of beautiful beaches. Many Canadians drive from Ontario and it’s approximately a 15-hour drive from Toronto and there are several routes to choose from.

Regardless how many times Noah and I travel to Myrtle Beach we are always in awe of the magnificent sunrise. It’s worth getting up at dawn to walk along the shore among the palm trees, collect washed up shells, and watch the orange, pink, yellow, and red sunrise over the waves of the ocean. On our last morning we saw a pod of dolphins happily jumping through the air, as if to wave goodbye to us with their fins until our next trip to the magnificent Grand Strand.

A Road Trip To Historic Georgetown

<strong>Spring-like weather is on the way and March Break is the perfect opportunity to plan a family road trip in Canada</strong>. So pack up your car, program your GPS, and start preparing for a road trip adventure in one of these exciting Canadian cities.

<strong>Toronto</strong>

If you live in one of the many urban suburbs outside of Toronto, March Break is the perfect time to drive into the city. Multiple highways lead into Toronto depending on your starting point, such as the 401, whose official name is the King’s Highway. If it’s cold enough bring your skates (or rent them) and take the Queen Elizabeth Way / 403 Highway towards <a href="http://nathanphillipssquareskaterentals.com"><strong>Nathan Phillip’s Square</strong></a> for a fun family skate, they are open to mid-March, weather permitting. If it’s warm enough, consider a drive to <strong><a href="http://www.highparktoronto.com/">High Park</a>, </strong>Toronto’s biggest park with tons of outdoor activities including hiking trails, a kids castle and play area, and even a restaurant on site. There is ample free parking with two main parking lots.

<strong>Ottawa</strong>

With the kids out of school for the week you may want to combine a road trip to Ottawa after Toronto. The drive to Ottawa is approximately 4.5 hours from Toronto and you can start your journey on the Don Valley Parkway and head towards the 401 and then the 416 to Ottawa. As Ottawa gears up for multiple celebrations for Canada’s milestone 150th

birthday there is so much to do in our Nations Capital. Original March Break activities range from hockey to haunted walks and everything in between. <a href="http://www.historymuseum.ca/hockey/?date=2017-02-19"><strong>The Canadian Museum of History</strong></a> has a special hockey exhibit starting March 10 where you can go back in time and sift through original artifacts, historic films, and even visit hockey dressing rooms. If you and the kids are are brave enough, go on an Ottawa <a href="http://hauntedwalk.com/ottawa-tours/"><strong>Haunted Walk tour</strong></a> such as ghost and gallows or a jail tour. A friendly guide will take you through streets, back alleys, and historic sites for a mix of entertainment and history while exploring the city and learning about the past.

<strong>Montreal</strong>

Located about a two hour drive from Ottawa is the stunning old city of Montreal, with the fastest driving route along the Trans Canada Highway. Montreal is the biggest city in Quebec and located on an island in the Saint Lawrence River. There is a neighbourhood to explore that suits everyone including cobblestoned streets, French colonial and Gothic Revival areas, and of course the adorable shops and boutiques in the famous Plateau. If you are traveling with little Disney fans between March 8th and 12th you can check out <a href="https://www.disneyonice.com/ca/en-ca/follow-your-heart"><strong>Disney On Ice</strong></a> at the Bell Centre with a spectacular Follow Your Heart Performance. Or if there are devoted hockey lovers among you there are several <a href="https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/schedule/2017-03-01/ET"><strong>Montreal Canadiens</strong></a> hockey games to attend at the Bell Centre in March, a perfect addition if you just researched hockey in Ottawa.

<strong>Quebec City</strong>

If you want to continue driving from city to city, the trek to Quebec City from Montreal is just under three hours. Or if your starting point is the outskirts of Quebec you can make your way towards the downtown core and visit the original <a href="https://www.hoteldeglace-canada.com/"><strong>Hotel de Glace</strong></a>. If you have ever wondered what it’s like to sleep on a bed of pure ice, this cozy hotel that is -30 degrees Celsius will fulfill all your icy dreams. It’s open until March 26th and this season, which marks 17 years, the theme is Northern Perspectives where you can uncover the mysteries of the North Pole. The unique Hotel de Glace is the first and only true ice hotel in North America, attracting over a million people worldwide since the frosty doors were opened.

<strong>Halifax</strong>

Meanwhile, on the other end of Canada in the Maritime Provinces, they have experienced some serious snow. If snow persists into March you may want to consider strapping on some snowshoes and joining the fun with multiple winter activities still underway. There are several winter guided <a href="http://www.hikenovascotia.ca/"><strong>snowshoe hikes</strong></a> in Halifax in March where you can learn all about Nova Scotia’s great outdoors. There is a handy online guide if you want to borrow, rent or buy snowshoes. You can also check out <a href="http://www.novascotia.com/see-do/attractions/point-pleasant-park/1461"><strong>Point Pleasant Park</strong></a>, it’s maintained all year round and is pet-friendly, so Fido can enjoy the great outdoors too. This grand park is locate in the south end of the Halifax peninsula and boasts 39 km of trails. It’s also home to the Prince of Wales Tower so you can sneak in a history lesson while school is out.

<strong>Moncton</strong>

Moncton is located in the southeastern portion of New Brunswick and the center of the Maritime Provinces in the Peticodiac River Valley. Moncton is home to the <a href="http://www.umoncton.ca/umcm-maum/"><strong>Acadian Museum</strong></a>, the oldest Acadian museum in the world. It’s located on the Moncton Campus of the University of Moncton, that is also home to the Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen Art Gallery, so plan to spend all day learning history and exploring magnificent artwork. Car lovers may want to come back to Moncton several months later once the snow is gone, as the city hosts the <a href="https://www.atlanticnationals.com/"><strong>Atlantic Nations</strong> </a>Automotive Extravaganza from July 5-9, 2017. It’s known as a hot-rod and classic car paradise and car loves from around the world attend to see these original automobiles.

March Break Road Trips

<strong>If you have read the Wheels.ca article about <em><a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/things-to-know-about-infant-car-seats/">Infant Car Seats</a></em> then you are aware there are four stages of child car seat use. </strong>

This article highlights <a href="http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safedrivers-childsafety-stage2-forward-facing-1085.htm"><em>Stage Two – Forward Facing Car Seats</em> </a>&amp; <em><a href="http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safedrivers-childsafety-stage3-booster-seats-1086.htm">Stage Three – Booster Seats</a></em>, and outlines handy tips and important material to help you navigate the installation process. As mentioned before, it’s important to do your own research when it comes to children’s safety, but consider this an informative starting point with information taken from Transport Canada.

Forward facing car seats are required once children have outgrown their infant rear-facing seats (typically used by kids ranging from 22 – 50 lbs. and at least until age two).  It is advised to keep children in rear-facing seats as long as possible provided they still fit within the weight and height range.

The forward-facing car seats, used for children 40 – 65 lbs., should get them through the preschool years and are used with a harness.  It’s important to follow you car manufacturer’s guidelines when installing them and consider taking a car seat clinic. There are three options when installing your forward facing car seat. It is important to use the method that keeps your car seat secured as tightly as possible.
<h3><strong>STEP ONE: </strong></h3>
<h3><strong>Universal Anchorage System (UAS)</strong></h3>
You can install your car seat with this method once the child reaches 40 lbs. If you have a UAS in your car it is advisable to use it when securing your car seat. Check your owner’s manual and look for the car seat symbol to help you find the UAS anchor bars and the connectors on the car seat. Refer to <a href="http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safedrivers-childsafety-stage2-forward-facing-1085.htm">Transport Canada</a> for more information on forward-facing car seat installation.

If your car seat has a built-in locking feature you can use this option.

<h3><strong>Seat Belt and Locking Clip</strong></h3>
This is used when your car and seat belts do not have a locking feature.

<h3><strong>STEP TWO: </strong></h3>
<h3><strong>(Attaching the tether)</strong></h3>
Forward-facing car seats must be attached with a tether strap. If you can’t find the tether anchors check your owners manual. According to Transport Canada guidelines, nothing should interfere with this tether strap and if installed correctly the car seat should not be able to move in either direction more than an inch. If it’s loose you can use your body weight to tighten the straps.

<h3><strong>BUCKLE UP:</strong></h3>
You are probably already a pro if you have buckled in a child using a rear-facing seat for the past two years using a harness. This harness works in the same way and be sure the straps are at or just above the child’s shoulders. Refer to <a href="http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safedrivers-childsafety-stage2-forward-facing-1085.htm">Transport Canada</a> for correct positioning of head, shoulders, and chest, and always ensure the back of the seat extends up past the child’s ears.

Children can use forward-facing car seats until they outgrow them, but remember that car seats have expiry dates, so if this seat has already been used by another child check the dates on the seat. Once children no longer require forward-facing seats it’s time to move on to booster seats. But keep in mind, before moving to a booster seat children should also be mature enough for this new upgrade and be able to sit properly, usually at about seven or eight years old. For example, if they are going to push the shoulder belt off to reach for toys while you are driving, they should stay in their forward facing car seat for now.

Booster seats are designed to position children safely in the back seat of the car with the seat belt properly located on their lap and shoulder. It is important to refer to the car owner’s manual when installing booster seats, as there are different ways this can be done. The end result should ensure the lap and shoulder belts are properly in place across children’s hips, chest and shoulders. On the Transport Canada website they advise the correct method to buckle up your child safely in their booster seat, including always using a lap belt and shoulder belt. The lap belt should never be on the child’s stomach, but sit snugly on their hips, and the shoulder belt should rest centered on their shoulder, not on their neck or arm. Children can use booster seats until they outgrow them, at which point they can switch to Stage Four – seat belts.
