At the 2018 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) announced the winners of the 2018 Canadian Car of the Year, and the 2018 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.

As a Honda dealer, I was pleased to see the <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/the-honda-accord-is-the-2018-ajac-car-of-the-year/">Honda Accord</a> win for Best Car, and I am sure other Honda dealers were equally delighted to learn that one of their cars won Canada’s most prestigious car award. Chrysler dealers, too, were thrilled that the <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/car-reviews/pacifica-hybrid-electrifies-minivan-segment/">Pacifica</a> won in the category of Utility Vehicle of the Year.

What does it mean for dealerships and the manufacturers when their vehicles win an important award like this? What does it mean for consumers? Can a prestigious car award affect sales of a winning model?

If an award originates from highly reputable research firm (J.D. Power &amp; Associates), consumer group (Consumer Reports), media company (Motor Trend), or association (AJAC), it can have considerable influence, and there is usually some anticipation and speculation among manufacturers and dealers, prior to an announcement.

Automakers will often use a vehicle’s winning status in their advertising to generate additional media coverage and consumer interest. This type of positive publicity happens very quickly — often within days of an announcement being made.

Dealers are quick to capitalize on positive news, too. They will highlight a particular vehicle’s winning status (and features) in their marketing and advertising, hoping the news will influence car buyers to consider the vehicle in question. Salespeople, too, are quick to include a vehicle’s winning status in their conversations with customers.

With consumers, learning that a particular model won a high-profile car award should not mean that they rush out and buy that vehicle. Car awards should not preclude other considerations, such as price, financing costs, fuel economy, safety features, insurance and maintenance costs, resale value, and so on.

Awards provide important information and insights, and consumers should research and plan their purchase carefully. They should know which vehicles have won awards (or multiple awards), particularly if the awards are from a highly reputable source.

While I believe that most car awards have value, consumers should understand what criteria is being evaluated. Some vehicles are judged on overall quality, performance and safety; others on design, tech features, and dependability.

On a personal note, this is my final Wheels column as President of the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association. It has been a great thrill and honour to write a weekly column in Canada’s largest circulation newspaper.

The feedback that I have received from Wheels readers, customers, colleagues, friends, and neighbours has been overwhelming. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to read the columns, respond to my ideas and opinions and who reached out to me.

During my term as TADA president, I have had an opportunity to travel to other cities, to meet industry peers in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Most of the industry folks I met are dealing with the same issues that our industry is facing in Canada — recruiting and training, maintaining a skilled workforce, adapting to new vehicle technologies, and delivering positive customer experiences in a rapidly changing automotive marketplace.

I have learned a lot of about the automobile industry over the past year. One of the great things about this industry is that whatever position you hold, you never stop learning, and the industry is changing at lightning speed.

Next week, <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/for-new-tada-president-its-all-about-the-people/">Susan Gubasta</a>, President of Mississauga Toyota, will become the first woman President of the TADA. Susan will take over the Dealer’s Voice column to share her unique views and opinions about the retail auto industry.

Dealer’s Voice: Car Awards have their Place in the Car-buying Process

People say, “They don’t make them like they used to.” That’s very true, and it’s a good thing!

In the 1970s, most passenger vehicles lasted no more than a few years and about 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometres) at the high end, and people traded vehicles every two to four years. In fact, odometers in the early ’70s registered 99,999 miles before going back to zeros.

Starting in the 1980s, however, the life expectancy of vehicles began to increase, due to improved quality, better warranties, proper maintenance, competition, and other factors.

By the year 2000, 33.7 per cent of vehicles in Canada lasted at least 15 years, and by 2017, upwards of 54 per cent of vehicles last for at least 15 years, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

Today, the average life expectancy of a vehicle in Canada is 12.88 years, compared to 15.36 years in the U.S. At my Honda dealership, we frequently see trade-ins with 250,000 km and more.

When consumers purchase or lease a new vehicle today, they expect to drive it for a specific number of years, depending on their personal circumstances. The extended lifespan of vehicles has influenced car-buying decisions and the long-term value of vehicles.

Improved quality is one reason why vehicles are lasting longer. Today’s vehicles are made of lightweight materials, such as high-strength steel, magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys, carbon fiber, and polymer composites. Plus, improvements to the internal combustion engine and computerized technology have led to better fuel economy and overall performance.

Improved quality has also allowed auto manufacturers to extend the length of standard warranties on new and pre-owned vehicles, which provides car owners with added protection and peace of mind.

A standard manufacturer’s <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/dealers-voice-vehicle-warranty/">warranty</a> on new vehicles is three years and at least 60,000 km (whichever comes first). Factory extended warranties are also available that provide consumers with safety and assurance for a longer period of time. (Honda offers up to eight years and/or 200,000 km).

<a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/48850/">Regular maintenance</a> is another factor in vehicle shelf life. When motorists perform recommended maintenance (tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation, etc.), their vehicles perform more efficiently and economically, and they last longer.

The phenomenon of ‘collector’ cars has influenced the lifespan of certain vehicles. In the past few decades, many Canadians have purchased and restored vintage automobiles from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, for their own enjoyment and for investment. In fact, an entire subculture has emerged around collector cars, a trend that is borne out by the popularity of classic car auctions, websites, and publications devoted to this growing market.

This trend toward longer shelf life for vehicles has led to considerable pent-up demand in the automotive marketplace. As a result, for the past eight years, there has been consecutive growth in the new car market in Canada, and in 2017, new vehicle sales topped two million units for the first time.

Long shelf life has also influenced the pre-owned vehicle market, as reconditioned used vehicles, if properly maintained, can be driven problem-free for years. Most automakers offer Certified Pre-Owned programs (fully inspected vehicles with low mileage and clean vehicle histories) through new-car dealerships.

The longer shelf life of automobiles today is a testament to the ongoing research, technology, innovations, advancements, and improvements made by auto manufacturers, and to the basic care and maintenance of automobiles by their respective owners.

Car owners can take comfort in knowing that today’s vehicles are designed to perform far more efficiently, for a much longer period, and will hold their value longer than vehicles built in any previous generation.

Longer Vehicle Life Expectancy a Testament to Research and Technology

One of the important steps in buying a new car is the test drive. This practice allows customers to experience the physical act of driving the vehicle they are interested in buying in a real-world setting.

With test drives, consumers learn if the vehicle is a good fit — meaning if the seating is comfortable and the pedals and dashboard controls are easily accessible, and to assess the visibility through the front, side, and back windows, etc.

If you have not test driven many vehicles, you may be surprised to learn how makes and models can differ widely in comfort, driveability and overall feel.

There has been a lot of discussion in the media about ‘virtual’ test drives, which has led to some confusion among consumers.

A real virtual test drive — although interesting in theory — does not yet exist in practice. Many manufacturers have produced 3D videos for their websites, where consumers can view a close-up of the vehicle’s features and benefits. This provides a close approximation of what driving a specific vehicle might be like.

A Google research study revealed that online video is the number one ad format that drives auto brand consideration, and more than 50 per cent of auto shoppers view 30 minutes or more of online videos throughout the car-buying process.

Audi has come close to an actual virtual test drive, teaming up with Samsung to develop a virtual headset. Consumers wear virtual headsets to tour a vehicle’s interior and even manipulate some of the controls to simulate an actual driving experience.

In 2013, BMW produced an interesting virtual test-drive app to promote its i3 electric car, where the viewer could interact with the vehicle’s features in “immersive 360-degree technology.”

As technology evolves and real-world virtual test drives become closer to reality, the best way to evaluate a vehicle remains the traditional test drive, where someone physically gets into a vehicle and drives it on an actual roadway.

Another reason to test drive a car is to build an emotional bond with a vehicle — to see the shiny new paint, to feel and smell the vehicle’s interior and ensure a great driving experience.

That’s not to say that virtual test drives don’t have value in the car-buying process. I’ve viewed several 3D videos produced by auto manufacturers, and they provide compelling insights about a vehicle’s interior features.

But for anyone in the market for a new or pre-owned vehicle, before you commit to buying it, I strongly recommend taking the vehicles on your short list for a physical test drive.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your test drive:

1) Avoid playing the radio or a stereo. Listen to how a vehicle operates;

2) Plan on driving for 20 to 30 minutes to evaluate how a vehicle handles on city roads and on highways, how it turns and parks, and whether there are blind spots;

3) Have a friend or family member accompany you, so they can identify potential issues. If someone other than yourself will be driving the vehicle, that person should drive it, too;

4) Pay attention to interior comfort; a vehicle should intuitively feel right when sitting in the driver’s seat;

5) Locate and test the main controls, such as the wipers and washers, headlights, and hazard lights;

6) Ensure there is ample space requirements for your lifestyle (i.e., back seat comfort, adequate trunk space). Pictures and videos don’t always provide a totally accurate representation of a vehicle’s interior and trunk space.

New technologies have made researching vehicles more efficient than ever, but there is still no technology that replicates an actual test drive: it remains an essential part of the car-buying journey.

Test Driving the Vehicles on your Short List is still the Best Option

Now that the 2018 Canadian International AutoShow has wrapped up for another year, many would-be car buyers who visited the show are armed with information about the makes and models that interest them.

Now comes the next part of the car-buying journey — choosing a dealership.

If you are looking for the right dealership to purchase a new or pre-owned vehicle, that choice can be daunting.

What truly makes a dealership great and worthy of your business in 2018? Great products? A fancy showroom? Industry awards?

<a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/automotive-dealerships-arent-going-anywhere/">Automotive Dealerships Aren’t Going Anywhere</a>

Based on my perceptions and experiences in the retail automobile industry, here are eight things that qualify dealerships as ‘great,’ in no particular order:

Responsiveness: Whether it’s answering a phone, greeting a customer in the showroom or responding to an online sales inquiry, quick responses are critical in today’s on-demand world. The kiss of death for any dealership — or any business, for that matter — is to keep customers waiting any longer than necessary. When customers feel ignored, they walk away.

Convenience: A drive-thru service bay, a comfortable customer lounge, Wi-Fi, coffee, cold drinks, online service appointment bookings, and shuttle service are among the conveniences that many modern dealerships offer. Performing service and repair work properly and on time, expediting paperwork quickly on the sale of new and pre-owned vehicles — these services are also important and keep customers coming back.

Presentation: A good selection of vehicles, well positioned on the lot and inside the showroom, how parts and accessories are showcased, the cleanliness of the floors, workspaces, and bathrooms — these details matter and will make customers (and staff) feel valued and comfortable.

Teamwork: Dealerships that work as a team exhibit certain confidence and purposefulness to their activities. Everyone, from receptionists and salespeople to service advisers and human resource managers, know and understand their respective roles within the organization. They engage with customers and colleagues in a positive manner, with the common goal of providing an exceptional customer experience

Adaptability: There is an expression in tech circles — adapt or die. Dealerships that adapt new tools, systems and processes tend to thrive in the competitive retail car marketplace. That could be an enhanced website that allows for quick and seamless interactions. It could be utilizing new technologies in the shop, or managing pre-owned inventory using the latest mobile apps and data systems. Great dealerships are constantly reinventing their business practices and looking forward, not backward.

Reputation: What others say about a business is more important than what it says about itself. That is certainly true with dealerships, as consumers have many public venues in which to express and share their opinions today. A great dealership will consistently score top ratings on Google reviews and other review sites, as well as on social media. A great reputation sends a powerful message that a business has the confidence and trust of its customers.

Community Involvement: Most new car dealerships are involved with their local communities. Some support little league sports teams, hospitals, food banks, service clubs, and other organizations. Some sponsor parades, festivals, and arenas. A true sign of greatness for dealerships is their capacity for making a <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/operating-a-dealership-in-a-small-town/">positive difference</a> in the lives of people in their communities.

Service: For modern, progressive dealerships, service means providing exceptional value in a timely and professional manner. Courtesy, honesty, respect, punctuality, cleanliness, friendliness, and dedication are some of qualities that define what service is all about in 2018. If you find a dealership that possesses these qualities, you can be assured that you are in good hands.

Good luck in your car-buying journey and in locating a dealership that will ‘wow’ you.

What makes a Dealership Great in 2018?

In the past two decades, the automotive collision repair industry has seen many innovative changes in technology, education, communication, and the environment.

However, three important issues are at play, which could affect the quality of collision repairs and, worse, lead to compromised safety for vehicle owners.

The first is the need for collision repair facilities to research and follow Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) processes after a collision, regardless if the damage appears minor. A survey from Collision Repair Magazine shows that only 25 per cent of respondents (repair shops) in Canada research OEM literature before they have collision repairs performed.

Some shops mistakenly believe that if they repair the same model frequently, they do not need to check required repair procedures every single time. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that repair shops need to research repair information every time to ensure that repairs are performed according to OEM standards.

For example, some cars have sensors in the seat that weigh the driver and adjust how hard or fast the airbag comes out after an accident. These sensors need to be reset, and you should always obtain a pre- and post-scan and keep a copy of this in your file.

If you drive a leased vehicle and it is not repaired to an acceptable standard after a collision, you may be required to pay a financial penalty equal to the cost of bringing the vehicle back to factory specifications.

The second issue is that many collision repair facilities do not have the minimum required equipment to repair today’s high-strength steel (HSS) vehicles. Advancements in multi-phase steel construction on some vehicles require that they be repaired on a factory-approved frame machine and the use of specific welding technology during the repair process.

If the welding process does not follow the OEM procedure, the crashworthiness of the vehicle will be compromised and it could lead to catastrophic results for the occupants.

The third issue is impact of aftermarket parts in crash energy distribution and crash severity. In some cases, the use of aftermarket parts in collision repair can negatively affect the crash load distribution and airbag deployment and can compromise occupant safety.

Aftermarket parts do not have to follow the strict development that the OEM has utilized. In fact, many aftermarket body parts are inferior to OEM parts and demonstrate decreased tolerances for corrosion resistance and lower crash resistance than factory-approved parts.

So, why are the OEMs required to meet crash-test safety regulations to try and achieve a 5-star safety rating; and yet with collision repairs, the same standards are not upheld, and vehicles could drop to a 3- or 4-star rating and possibly compromise occupant safety?

This has to change, and it requires better regulation of the collision repair industry, to provide greater safety for drivers and passengers. Many OEMs have created certified collision networks so that they can have a greater influence on ensuring the cars are repaired to OEM standards utilizing the proper specifications and following OEM procedures and processes.

Some insurance companies have policies that stipulate <a href="http://What's the difference between Aftermarket and OEM parts?">non-OEM parts</a> must be used after a vehicle has reached a certain age or mileage. If vehicle owners want to use OEM replacement parts, they may be required to pay the difference in price.

Vehicle owners should read the fine print on their insurance policy to know what type of replacement parts are covered under their policy.

When choosing a collision-repair facility, make sure to ask if the facility is prepared to check repair procedures on your specific make, model, and year of vehicle, and whether it has the correct equipment and specifications to perform the proper repairs on your vehicle.

Need Collision Repairs? Read this first

The 2018 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, presented by the Toronto Star and Wheels.ca., is now open to the public at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

In recent years, one of the many features of the AutoShow — which runs till Feb. 25 — has been exhibits and displays that focus on automotive education and automotive careers.

As the retail automobile industry continues to grow and evolve, career opportunities in this sector for men and women of all ages have never been greater.

At this year’s AutoShow, the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association is highlighting many of those careers, along with the educational requirements and guidance for landing a job in this exciting industry.

The TADA will a have a strong presence of interactive and engaging, career-focused programming at this year’s AutoShow. The association’s 700 Level booth will combine promotion of both Career Start and <a href="https://www.carsandjobs.com/">CarsAndJobs.com</a>.

Information will be available on a wide variety of automotive education pathways, careers in the automotive retail and service industry, and effective methods of best connecting candidates with the car career of their dreams.

In collaboration with Canadian International AutoShow staff, the TADA has created a show-long education program, which will provide information, networking opportunities, and promotion of its initiatives to a larger number of students and school contacts than in previous years.

Our daily Live Stage sessions, which will be broadcast live on CarsandJobs Facebook, will feature some of our key education partners, including Centennial College, Automotive Business School of Canada, and Conestoga College. We will also host groups from the University of Toronto, McMaster University, and the University of Waterloo.

The association’s booth will also showcase the easy-to-use online marketplace for substantial job opportunities in this industry across Ontario.

The TADA is proud and pleased to again host this year’s winners of the University of Waterloo’s Electric Vehicle challenge — the team from Bluevale Secondary School. Auto Education and Careers take Centre Stage at the 2018 AutoShow

2017 Canadian International AutoShow

Without question, the most exciting automotive event of the year is the Canadian International AutoShow (CIAS) in Toronto.

The largest consumer show in Canada in size and attendance, the 45th Canadian International AutoShow takes place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (North and South buildings) Feb. 16-25.

This year’s auto show promises to be bigger and better than ever, with over 125 exhibitors and more than 1,000 cars, concepts, and trucks on display, prize packages, and special promotions.

This year’s theme is The New Movement, which will focus on the evolution of the automobile driven by personalization, mobility, and rapid advancements in new infrastructure and technology.

Auto manufacturers are embracing the new technologies shaping our industry, from hybrid power and electric to hydrogen fuel-cell and autonomous innovations. Consumers are eager to know more about these new developments, and the AutoShow is the place to learn from the experts.

The 2018 AutoShow will feature the fastest production car on the planet — the Koenigsegg Agera RS, appearing in Canada for the first time.

Another feature attraction will be a significant display of cars celebrating the “<a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/autoshow-celebrates-70-years-of-porsche/">70 years of Porsche</a>,” where visitors can learn about the evolution of Porsche and view a selection of historically important Porsche models on display.

The “<a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/mattel-hot-wheels-autoshow/">50 Years of Hot Wheels</a>” exhibit will showcase a Hot Wheels super track, a display area featuring Hot Wheels collectors and their treasures, and six life-size Hot Wheels replica cars.

Back by popular demand is Auto Exotica, featuring a selection of marquee vehicles, including Lamborghini, McLaren, Bugatti, Aston Martin, and Tesla making a return appearance.

The ever-popular Art &amp; the Automobile exhibit, presented by the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance, will feature vintage automobiles, with a focus on the brands and mascots that made the classics the icons they are today.

A special addition this year is the Artist’s Enclosure, where unique automotive artwork will be offered for sale, and images from celebrated automotive photographer, Michael Furman, will be on display.

Ever wanted to drive an electric vehicle? Here’s your chance to do so (as long as you are over 21 and have a valid driver’s licence). Ten automakers will offer <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/electric-test-drives-at-toronto-autoshow/">free test drives</a> of their EVs in the convention centre’s North and South Buildings.

The AutoShow, in partnership with Performance Auto &amp; Sound magazine, is sponsoring an online, fan-voted competition for modified cars called Tuner Battlegrounds. The winner will be crowned during the AutoShow.

An ever-growing global spectator sport is eSports, and the 2018 AutoShow will feature an eSports gaming area. This will involve simulated car races on the famous Nurburgring circuit on the Forza Motorsports 7 platform, where participating competitors can earn up to $1,000 in prize money.

This year, the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association will host exhibits, interactive displays, panel discussions and presentations about education and careers in the retail automobile industry, and each day, the TADA will feature a different school, educational initiative, or extracurricular group or team on the show’s Live Stage.

Also new is the Automotive Intelligence Series, where industry leaders will discuss topical issues affecting Canadian drivers. These talks will run most days and will be free to attend for showgoers.

Bragging rights are up for grabs when the Canadian Car and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards are announced on Media Day (Feb. 15) at the show. These awards are selected by members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.

Three new awards will be announced this year: The Automotive Innovation Awards will be presented for Best Safety Innovation, Best Green Innovation and Best Overall Innovation, on Feb. 21.

Rev your Engines for the 2018 Canadian International AutoShow

The 2018 Canadian International AutoShow opens its doors in two weeks (Feb. 16-25), and already, car enthusiasts are purchasing tickets online and planning to visit the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to find out what is new in the automotive world.

The AutoShow is Canada’s largest consumer show in size and attendance, and it attracts visitors of all ages. Whether you are looking to purchase a new vehicle or want to learn about the latest models, concepts, technologies, and developments, this show will satisfy your automotive curiosity on all levels.

For those planning to attend this year’s AutoShow, here are some tips that will help you get the most out of your show experience.

Visit <a href="https://www.autoshow.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Autoshow.ca</a>: This website is your online portal to all of the features, exhibits, prizes, and promotions happening at the show. Here, you will find descriptions of the various exhibits, such as the <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/mattel-hot-wheels-autoshow/">50th Anniversary of Hot Wheels </a>exhibit, the <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/autoshow-celebrates-70-years-of-porsche/">70 Years of Porsche</a> display, the new eSports Gaming Arena, <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/electric-test-drives-at-toronto-autoshow/">Electric Test Drive</a> opportunities, news and media information, a venue map, show hours, ticket information, and more.

Shop and Compare: One of the main attractions at the AutoShow is, of course, the display of new models from the major automakers. More than 1,000 cars, trucks, SUVs, concept cars, exotics, classics, muscle cars, fully electric, and autonomous vehicles will be on display at the North and South Building. Car buyers can use this opportunity to evaluate the various makes and models and speak with brand representatives. Compare body styles, fuel efficiency, on-board technology, safety ratings, horsepower and prices. Most vehicles for sale in Canada are represented at the AutoShow.

Pack Light and Dress Appropriately: Bring comfortable indoor walking shoes, as there’s a lot of ground to cover. To reduce fatigue, avoid carrying big, bulky bags and unnecessary clothing. Winter coats, scarves, mitts, and hats might become awkward to carry around after a few hours, so use the coat checks at the show or leave some outerwear in your car (if that is an option). Plan to bring bottled water with you as well, or purchase it at the show.

Plan what you want to See and Experience: When you arrive, pick up an Official AutoShow Guide and map so that you know where everything is and how to get around. The guide will make it easier to navigate your way through the spacious buildings so that you do not miss anything.

Learn about Auto Careers: The Trillium Automobile Dealers Association will provide eye-catching exhibits, interactive displays, panel discussions, and presentations about education and careers in the retail automobile industry. Each day during the show, the TADA will feature a different school, educational initiative or extracurricular group or team on the show’s live stage. These unique, interactive onstage sessions will give audiences a look at the variety of careers in the industry. Additionally, a number of recent graduates who have entered the industry will speak about their journeys and experiences thus far, as well as where they would like to see their automotive careers take them. For those interested in learning more about the career opportunities available in the automotive industry, the 2018 AutoShow is the place to be.

Make it an Event: Plan to attend the show with friends, colleagues or family members and make it an occasion. Spend a few hours browsing through the North and South buildings. There is much to see and do, with dozens of excellent restaurants, pubs, and bistros nearby. The AutoShow is easily accessible by public transit, and plenty of parking is available close by.

Getting the Most out of Your Canadian International AutoShow Experience

Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles

Plenty of media attention is paid to all-electric and hybrid vehicles, but not to hydrogen-powered fuel-cell cars.

That is about to change, as hydrogen-powered cars could become a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine within the next decade.

Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical element in the universe and is used as fuel for rockets, as well as in the food, beverages, and pharmaceutical industries. It’s now being deployed in cars as an alternative transportation fuel in zero-emission vehicles.

Hydrogen is a cleaner alternative to gasoline- and electric-powered cars, trucks and buses, which explains its appeal to consumers, automakers, and governments.

To create electricity to power a car battery and motor, hydrogen and oxygen are mixed in specially designed plates, which are installed inside a vehicle.

The advantages of hydrogen fuel-cell technology are many: Fuel-cell electric vehicles have a driving range of more than 480 kilometres on a single tank of hydrogen fuel; refuelling takes only a few minutes, similar to gas-powered engines; water is the only emission; and fuel cells have no moving parts, so there is less maintenance.

Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai are leading the charge in hydrogen-powered vehicles. The Honda Clarity, Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Tucson ix35 FCEV are three hydrogen-powered vehicles now commercially sold and leased in California (the Hyundai Tucson is35 FCEV is the only hydrogen car currently available in Canada).

Other automakers, including General Motors, Volkswagen, and BMW, are also pursuing hydrogen fuel-cell technology, either through partnerships or independently.

Another use for hydrogen vehicles could be with autonomous vehicles, operating in highly populated urban areas. The quick refuelling time of a hydrogen-powered autonomous vehicle — compared to the longer ‘Level 2’ charging time of an electric vehicle — could make the former technology more attractive to consumers. A handful of hydrogen refuelling stations could support an entire fleet of vehicles.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Hyundai announced it will start testing a fuel-cell powered, sport utility vehicle for <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/hyundai-starts-level-4-autonomous-testing/">Level 4 autonomous driving</a> and aims to bring a model to the market by 2021.

According to a Government of Canada website, “Canada is recognized internationally as a global leader in hydrogen and fuel-cell research, development and early stage commercialization. Canada is a large producer and user of hydrogen and home to a significant concentration of hydrogen and fuel-cell expertise.”

In 2016, Vancouver-based <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/hydrogen-fuel-celled-cars-make-mark/">Ballard Power Systems</a> received an order for five hydrogen electric fuel-cell engines to power clean energy buses in California. The company has collaborated for years with Tier 1 automotive manufacturers (Tier 1 companies are direct suppliers to auto manufacturers).

But, moving forward with hydrogen fuel-cell technology will be an uphill battle. The big challenge in Canada is a lack of refuelling stations across the country. Governments and private companies are reluctant to build these stations until they see greater consumer demand for hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. It’s a chicken-and-egg situation.

Nevertheless, automakers are forging ahead with their own research and development of this emerging technology. No automaker wants to be left behind in the race to develop hydrogen fuel-cell technology.

Could Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles become Viable?

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is the world’s largest technology show, and in the past decade, it has transformed into a showcase for the latest vehicle technologies.

This is no exaggerated claim given that every major automotive manufacturer is represented at CES. Consumer Reports claims that CES is “the auto industry’s favourite showcase for self-driving car technology,” and USA Today has named it one of the “10 best auto shows.”

I attended CES 2018 last week, where automakers and tech firms unveiled their newest gadgets, gizmos, and vehicle technologies. It was dazzling and impressive.

The technologies featured in recent years at CES (and at auto shows around the world) should leave no doubt about the future of automotive technology and transportation.

Although we do not know what type of motive power systems will prevail (electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel, Diesel fuel), or the precise timeline for mass adoption of autonomous vehicles, it is clear that software and services are two of the biggest trends driving the auto industry.

Many of the new products and announcements by automakers and tech firms at 2018 CES confirm this view.

For instance, we saw the debut of <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/ces-2018-byton-ev/">Byton’s autonomous EV</a>, a Lexus-based Platform 3.0 automated driving test vehicle from Toyota, Kia’s Nio EV concept, and Nissan’s brain-to-car interface.

Honda, the automaker that I represent, unveiled its new 3E (Empower, Experience, Empathy) Robotics Concept, demonstrating a range of experimental technologies aimed at advancing mobility and making people’s lives better.

Honda also featured its Mobile Power Pack World, which includes a portable, swappable battery pack for light electric products, and a recharging system for use at home, recreation or during a natural disaster.

Toyota launched a unique mobility ecosystem and concept vehicle called e-Palette. It’s a fully <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/toyota-next-gen-autonomous-car-at-ces/">autonomous</a>, battery-electric vehicle that will provide advanced vehicle and related mobility services for business applications. Partner companies will be able to install their own automated driving system.

Chipmaker Nvidia announced a partnership with Uber, Volkswagen, and China’s Baidu to increase its presence in the field of autonomous vehicles. New software platforms by Nvidia will allow automakers to create artificially intelligent co-pilots for cars and to use facial recognition to detect a driver’s level of alertness while driving.

In 2016, Korean electronics company Samsung acquired U.S.-based Harman, a global leader in connected car technology, lifestyle audio innovations, and analytics. The now-combined company unveiled a slew of new car technologies, including a Digital Cockpit, a 5-G connection for vehicles that will facilitate faster over-the-air software updates from automakers, and a new partnership to pursue an open autonomous platform.

CES attendees even had an opportunity to experience leading-edge automotive technology on the streets of Las Vegas. Ride-hailing app, Lyft, in partnership with a tech company (Aptiv), offered rides in self-driving vehicles from the Las Vegas Convention Center to various destinations in the city. A driver was present inside the vehicle, along with an ‘in-car host’ to field questions.
