The Mercedes-AMG S63 S wagon is not your run-of-the-mill station wagon, it certainly looks like it from the outside, but what it is hidden under the rather subdued sheet metal is what makes this wagon truly extraordinary.

It is strange that, before the insurgence of the SUV, the station wagon was the staple family mover. They afforded the family with the extra space, smooth ride and all-around utility. Move forward to today and things couldn’t be so different. The station wagon, in its old form, is all but dead.

There are still some surviving wagons but are now a totally different beasts from bygone days. Gone is the mundane and predictable styling with lacklustre performance, they have now been replaced with high-performance engines and sportscar-like handling without giving up any of the extra space associated with a wagon.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 S is certainly atop of the new breed of sport wagons. I said that the E63 S wagons exterior design was subdued, when in reality the styling is a bit more aggressive than you are led to believe at first glance.

The new large vertical strutted grille with slimmer headlights gives it an angry face that is enhanced by the creased and raised hood. New larger air intakes mounted below, and each side of the grill add to its road presence. Not much has happened design wise at the rear for a couple of generations, and apart from the AMG badging and quad exhaust tips you wouldn’t really know what a monster you are following.

Where the E63 S wagon stands out from the crowd is what is hidden under the hood. A hand built, biturbo, 4.0-litre V8 that has been shoehorned into place and is attached to a nine-speed automatic transmission that distributes the power to all four wheels by means of their 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The power produced is a phenomenal 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. This will propel this people carrier to 100 km in 3.5 seconds – that is in supercar territory - and is actually faster than its sportscar sibling the AMG GT R.

To handle all the power being produced the AMG Dynamic select drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+, RACE and Slippery) configure the drivetrain to best handle driving conditions and surfaces. In addition, an individual mode can be set up specifically to the drivers needs that allows the driver to set up the engine, throttle response, gear changes and suspension individually allowing for a more controlled driving experience. All which can be controlled by the two steering wheel mounted buttons.

An adaptive air suspension package manages to keep all four wheels planted firmly on the road while making the drive as smooth as possible for all passengers, The addition Dynamic Cornering Assist that can detect understeer when cornering and will apply the inside rear brake that shift the torque load to the outside wheel bringing the vehicle into line.

The driver-centric cabin is sporty while being spacious and well set up. The dual floating screens are crisp and bright while most of the controls can be managed directly from the steering wheel. The rear seat can sit three grown adults comfortably while still managing to carry a week’s worth of luggage behind them.

It’s not until you press the start button on this car do you realize what it is all about. The engine roars into life, touch the accelerator and it shouts at you letting you and everyone around you know it means business. Driving such a powerful car isn’t as daunting as you would think, all the power is kept well under control which is especially good when driving in the city, heck the engine will also shut down four cylinders for you to save some gas – but that’s not why people buy cars like this.

Get onto the highway and things change, acceleration is blistering, and the sound coming out of the exhaust ensures everyone around hears you are there. Gear changes are smooth and precise both when using automatic mode or using the paddle shifters, obviously, the harder the acceleration the more severe the changes become but this is what driving a car like this is all about. The closer you drive to the red line the louder the screaming banshees emanating from exhaust sound.

The handling is superb taking corners at speed is handled without fuss and the car stays flat throughout the corner and never felt like it was about to break away from me. The ride is a little hard, but that is exactly the way it should be in a car with this power and performance. Steering is precise and sharp ensuring that you feel the road no matter the circumstances. Braking is as controlled as acceleration but can be as harsh as needed but still remains balanced and manageable.

On winding back roads the E63 wagon comes into its own, it sticks to the surface if it was on rails, no matter how hard it is pushed. There isn’t any noticeable body roll to make the journey uncomfortable for passengers even when pushing it hard.  It eats up tight bends and seems to take pleasure from being pushed harder than you really should.

It’s hard to believe that a car that is a tad under 5-metres long holds the road so well. At no point did the back feel like it was about to break free and it always remained under control.

The beauty of this E63 S wagon it is sporty and sportscar-like as you want it to be as well as being calm and controlled for city driving.

The station wagon has certainly changed in the last decade or so and after driving this E63 S Wagon I am so glad they have. There certainly is nothing predictable or lacklustre about it.

Review 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon

Ingolstadt, July 19, 2021 – Audi has introduced the second-generation RS 3 with a plethora of upgrades to give it class-leading performance and handling. Unfortunately, the new RS 3 will only be available in the sedan version in Canada with the European market getting both the sedan and hatch.

Under the hood is the same turbocharged, 2.5-litre in-line five-cylinder engine that has been tweaked and now produces 400 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, which is impressive for a compact sedan. It now takes a blistering 3.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h and onto a restricted top speed of 250 km/h, but with the available Dynamic package the top speed has been extended to 280 km/h. The maximum horsepower is now available at a lower 5,600 r.p.m. allowing much more rapid acceleration at lower rev ranges. Power is put down to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that now has shorter shifting times and with a sportier gear ratio spread.

The RS 3 is Audi’s first model to come with a torque-splitter that comes as standard equipment, replacing the rear axle multiple disc clutch.

When the RS 3 is driven harder the torque-splitter increases the available torque to the outer rear wheel reducing understeer.

Audi has also developed a new drive mode specifically for the RS 3 - RS Torque Rear – this now allows full drifting (on closed circuits) by directing power loads of up to 1,7450 Nm to one rear wheel. Also introduced is another new drive mode – RS Performance Mode – specifically designed for the race track it uses a unique engine and transmission set up that, by means of the torque splitter, delivers dynamic and sporty handling as well as reducing any under and oversteer to a minimum.

Other drive modes available via the Audi drive select are comfort, auto, dynamic, RS individual and efficiency giving it a total of seven driving modes.

To help keep all four wheels planted firmly on the tarmac the RS 3 now comes with the RS sports suspension as standard with adapter damper control being made available as an option. A larger wheel camber – where the wheels are directed more to the road – adds more precise steering feel that allows more cornering force.

A new modular vehicle dynamic controller (mVDC) has been added, it collects data from all components applicable to lateral dynamics allowing for a quicker and more precise interaction. It also synchronizes the torque splitter; adaptive dampers and the torque being pushed to a specific wheel giving the RS 3 more precise steering and handling while increasing performance on tight back roads.

To ensure the RS 3 comes to a rapid stop it is now equipped with larger six-piston steel brakes as standard with a ceramic brake package being available as an option. The ventilated discs are 375 by 36 mm upfront with the rears being 310 x 22 mm. The larger brakes now reduce the cooling time of the brakes by 20 per cent.

The exterior has been beefed up as well with new RS 3 specific LED headlights with an RS 3 specific daytime running lights. The front wheel arches have been increased to accommodate the 33 mm increase in the tread size. The front air intake has also been enlarged to increase airflow to the engine. Kyalami green and Kemora gray RS-specific body colours have been added with the option of having a contrasting roof colour available for the first time.

A new air outlet has been incorporated to the rear of the front wheel arch that adds a sporty element.

An RS-specific rear bumper has an integrated diffuser that encapsulates the RS sport exhaust system with the oval tailpipes sitting on each side.

The cabin has been designed with specific RS elements to add to the vehicle’s sportiness. Audi’s virtual cockpit plus with its 12.3-inch display is offered as standard equipment. A head-up display, 10.1-inch touch screen display and an RS sport steering wheel are now part of the standard package. The RS Sport leather steering wheel has die-cast paddle shifters mounted with a 12 o’clock stripe matching the exterior colour.

The new RS button has also been added to the steering wheel that allows the driver to set up specific driving characteristics beforehand that can be changed quickly by the touch of a button.

The new RS 3 will be introduced to the Canadian marketplace later in the year as a 2022 model with prices being made available closer to the launch date.

More power, more style, and a new torque splitter define 2022 Audi RS3

Maybach as a stand-alone brand disappeared from the world’s marketplace just under 10 years ago but has now been reintroduced as Mercedes-Benz über luxury sub-brand that showcases Mercedes luxury and technology in much the same manner as AMG does with performance.

The new Mercedes-Maybach GL600 is aiming high with both the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and the Bentley Bentayga set firmly in its sights.

From the outside there is nothing garish or opulent to make it stand out in a crowd, but I think that is exactly what Mercedes-Benz were trying to achieve with the styling. It is a big truck and with its massive 23-inch wheels makes it seem even more so. Up front the large chrome grille with a lower chrome meshed air intake cover that stretches the width of the vehicle does give it a strong road presence without giving away what it really is.

Only a Maybach emblem mounted at the base of the D pilar and a badge on the rear hatch acknowledge that something special is hidden under the sheet metal.

The interior cabin is a totally different story, both from a driver’s perspective and especially for the rear seat passengers.
It is obvious from first look that everything has been set up for the rear passengers. The two rear bucket seats are more akin to an airline first-class pod. No expense has been spared with fit, finish and electronic enhancements.

The rear seats have been finished off with the finest of Napa leather and cushioning making them one of the most comfortable I have sat in.

The rear seats are as comfortable as any high-end recliners found in any living room but with the advantage of being able to be moved to any position to make anyone of any shape or stature more than comfortable. And if that isn’t enough there is a separate plush cushion and super soft head pillow included.

Just like an airline first-class seat there is folding tables that slide into the centre console just below the wine cooler – yes, I did just say wine cooler.

Between the seats is a removable tablet that allows rear-seat passengers to take control of the entire vehicle from music choice to cabin temperature, unfortunately, there is still a need for a driver to steer and work the pedals. If the interior isn’t comfortable enough with just the seating, there is a small fragrance bottle attached to the air system that produces a cabin atmosphere to further enhance the rear seat experience.

Although the Maybach is set up primarily for the comfort of the rear-seat passengers it doesn’t mean that the drivers and front passenger seats have been ignored. The dash is stunning with fit and finish being just as luxurious as the rear. A large drivers digital display is bright and crisp and can be set up specifically to the drivers needs. Black piano finishes with white horizontal lines seem to expand the cabin making the drivers cabin fresh and airy.

Under the hood is a super smooth 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine attached to a nine-speed Tiptronic transmission that puts the power to all four wheels by means of Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive system. The engine produces 550 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque which is more than adequate to propel this monster to 100 km/h in just under five seconds.

A 48-volt mild hybrid system brings a further 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, adding extra power to compensate for turbo lag and making hard acceleration as comfortable for the passengers in the rear.

Just to ensure that the ride is as comfortable as possible there is even a “Maybach” driving mode that sets up the drivetrain, suspension, and body to make sure that the rear seat passengers take precedence during any excursion to the opera.

To ensure the smoothest of drives the adaptive suspension has been enhanced by air springs at all four corners and uses electronically-controlled hydraulics to manage the individual wheels thereby making sure all the bumps in the road are traversed with ease and without the feel being transferred into the cabin.

The Mercedes-Maybach in this form is aimed at a certain market segment. I can’t see it being used as a regular daily driver. It is much too sophisticated for that. Most owners will probably never drive it – that is for the chauffeur, but that doesn’t take away from the driveability of such a big SUV.

With the inclusion of the wine cooler, it all but eliminates any storage space in the cargo area making it more appealing to the Luxury Limousine market.

The Mercedes-Maybach is the epitome of luxury and manages to fly below the radar for those rich enough to afford it and don’t want to be seen.

BMW have solidified their presence in the electrification marketplace with the introduction of their latest fully electric vehicles the iX Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), i4 eDrive40 and the M Performance i4 M50 gran coupes.

The iX xDrive50 comes packed with technological innovations that includes BMW’s 5th generation eDrive that manages to house the electric motor, power electronics, and transmission in one unit. The iX will be driven by two electric motors, the front-mounted will produce 258 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque with the rear motor producing 335 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both motors produce a combined power output of 516 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. The motors are fed power from a high-voltage Lithium-Ion 111.5 kW battery pack that can be charged to up to 80 per cent in just over 30 minutes using a DC fast charger (200kW) and 11 hours using a single-phase level 2 charger (11kW). The fast charger will enable the iX to increase its range by over 150km in just 10 minutes with a predicted overall range of 475 km from fully charged.

The iX will come with an electric all-wheel drive that can split the torque from 100 per cent in the rear to all wheel drive to ensure all-around traction. The iX has three driving modes: Personal, Sport and efficient, each mode not only changes the settings for the drivetrain but also changes the interior display styles and ambient lighting.

Internally the driver will benefit from the new iDrive 8 that will further increase personalization and driver integration with the vehicle.  A new low-mounted curved screen stretches across the dash and incorporates a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display and is covered by a frameless single-piece glass that is angled towards the driver. The new system has been designed to enhance dialogue interaction rather than using buttons and switches. A drive selection rocker switch is now mounted on the centre consul that replaces the traditional gear stick.

A plethora of safety and technical enhancements have been added that includes a nifty overhead interior camera that can be used to take selfies of the occupants or as a more practical security feature where you can link up to the car to check that nothing has been left in the vehicle when parked.

The iX is slated to arrive in Canadian dealers in the first quarter of 2022 with pre-orders being taken from June 2nd  2021. The iX has an estimated price starting at $89,990 CAD.

The i4 will be arriving around the same time as the iX but will come in two distinct flavours, the i4 edrive40 and the first M Performance fully electric vehicle the i4 M50.

The  i4 eDrive40 will come with a single 5th generation eDrive rear-mounted powerplant that puts the power down to the rear wheels only that produces 335 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The M50 will come with the same eDrive but with an additional motor a motor mounted at the front that adds to a combined output from both motors to 536 hp and 586 lb-ft of torque, the M50 also incorporates BMW’s electric all-wheel-drive system that can split the torque at both ends.

Both get their power from a 398.5 kW lithium-ion battery pack that like its sibling iX can be charged up to 80 percent in just over 30 minutes on a 200kW fast charger and will take approx. 7.6 hours to fully charge on a level 2, 11kW charger.

The new chassis design incorporates lift-related shocks, rear air suspension, integrated braking system, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and near-actuator wheel slip limitation.

The M50 gets upgraded adaptive M suspension that is made up of individually configured springs and shocks with additional spring strut tower braces added at the front end. The M50 also benefits from sport steering,  M Sport brakes and M designed light-alloy wheels. A sport boost function has also been added to the M50.

Both i4 models come with launch control with the M50 having a specially designed sport boost function that can be activated when the vehicle is in Sport mode that adds another 67 hp to its already hefty 536 hp, for a maximum of 10 seconds.

The driver-focused cabin of both models benefits from the same low 12.4-inch information display and the 14.9-inch control panel as the iX that is merged into one continuous single display unit that integrates BMW’s new iDrive 8.

The M50 also gets enhanced external design features that include the large signature M kidney grille as well as additional side air intakes that keep the brakes cool.

Both the i4 eDrive40 and M50 will be available as a 2022 model in early 2022 with pre-orders being taken from mid-July.

First Look: BMW’s next-generation EVs

It’s not often you can use the words ‘practical’ and ‘high performance' in the same sentence, especially when describing a car. The Audi RS 6 Avant certainly fits into both categories and manages to offer even more to boot.

In a time when sedans sales are diminishing at an alarming rate and wagons are as common as hen's teeth, it seems strange that electrically-minded Audi would still produce a wagon that is not only comfortable and practical, but is also capable of challenging most supercars on the track. All this while still having enough cargo space to carry a family of five and enough luggage to last them a week.

When you first think of a wagon you envisage a boxy people and luggage carrier, but the RS 6 Avant throws all these misconceptions out of the window with its powerful exterior design, interior space and level of comfort.

Audi has taken a different design initiative from its competitors. This isn’t a powerful package hidden under a demure body shell. The exterior design shows it is a wagon with a big difference. The RS 6 is hunkered low with its fenders being extended by 40mm to be able to contain the massive 22-inch wheels. From both the front and rear, the RS 6 looks muscular and powerful with the Nardo Gray paint adding to its aggressive stance. The black rear diffuser that encompasses the two huge rear exhaust tips adds another sporty dimension to the rear, not normally associated with a wagon.

This particular RS 6 came with the Carbon Optics Package that adds a hefty $6,350 to the price tag that includes the 22-inch black wheels, black badging, numerous glossy carbon fibre exterior finishes that include the wing mirror housing.

As you would expect, the interior of the RS 6 is not your normal wagon either. The fit and finish is more than deserving of its six-figure price tag. Black  Valcona leather, RS Sports seats finished with double red stitching add to the sportiness of the cabin. The centre console is made up of an upper 10.6-inch infotainment touch screen situated directly above a lower 8.6-inch screen that is used to manage the dual-zone climate control. The carbon fibre trim on the dash adds to the luxurious feel of the interior while still managing to stick to the sports car feel. The RS Design Package adds RS floor mats, black seat belts with a grey border, leather dash armrests and consul and an Alcantara finished steering wheel for a further $1,900.

Audi’s Virtual Cockpit is standard in the RS 6 and gives the driver more flexibility especially when the 12-inch digital screen can be tailored to the driver's personal needs.

The cargo area certainly isn’t a cosmetic addition either, it is functional and big enough to fit several large suitcases easily.

Most of the RS 6’s magic is hidden under the sheet metal.

Upfront is a  superb 4.0-litre  twin-turbocharged V8  that produces 591 hp and 591 lb/ft of torque that will propel it up to 100km/h in a blistering 3.6 seconds. The 8-speed transmission is connected to Audi’s Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system ensuring that traction is spread to all four corners equally during aggressive acceleration. The standard adaptive air suspension controls the ride comfort and performance levels depending on the speed of the vehicle or how the driver chooses to have it set up.

Also introduced is the RS button on the steering wheel that can be set up with two pre-determined RS driving modes that control the engine, transmission, steering and suspension that is easily changed between modes by a simple press.

The RS 6 has a real split personality  - with the proper set up driving around town is pleasurable, quiet and, thanks to the air suspension, comfortable. It handles the rough pot-holed roads of Southern Ontario with ease and not much fuss. The engine noise doesn’t resonate into the cockpit and makes for a pleasurable about-town drive. Acceleration is easily controlled especially when there is so much power available.

Turning in tight spots is made easier with the rear-wheel steering that is included as part of the Dynamic Package ($2,950) that also includes dynamic steering and a sport rear differential. This is all and well, but in reality, no one buys an RS 6 Avant to tootle around town with.

With the press of a button everything changes, and the true RS spirit explodes from under the hood as the RS 6 is metamorphosized into an angry beast. The vehicle hunkers down, the exhaust note changes from a purr to a roar and long roads become shorter in an instant. Acceleration, while controlled, is blistering and I don’t know if it is the engine that is pulling the car along or the roar from the exhaust that is pushing it along. Under hard acceleration, the gear changes are perfectly timed and surprisingly smooth.  Getting up to highway speeds is made so easy – staying at highway speeds is ever so more difficult.

Even at speed, the RS 6 is easily managed and hitting a bend at high speed is kept evenly balanced by the air suspension, rear-wheel steering and of course the AWD system. I did push it hard into a few corners I was certain that the road was going to give way before the car lost traction. There is virtually no body roll and the handling seems to improve the more aggressively you drive it.

The RS 6 Avant is a beast, but a beast that can be easily controlled thanks to so much technical innovation. It can be a sweet as can be for driving around town in a relaxed manner but can change in an instant into a monster that will leave all passengers (and all their luggage) hanging on for dear life!

Lexus have proven that they mean business with the introduction of their new 2022 IS 500 F SPORT Performance.

Shoehorned under the hood is a five-litre naturally aspirated V-8 engine that produces a powerful 472 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. All the power is put down to the rear wheels via the same eight-speed Sport Direct automatic transmission found in the lesser IS 300 and IS 350 RWD siblings. This combination propels it to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds while emanating a “ferocious” sound from its dual-stacked tailpipes – well, that how Lexus describe it.

There hasn’t been much exterior design change from the IS 350 F SPORT but to be able to accommodate the much larger powertrain the engineers have had to move the radiator forward as well as extending the front fenders, bumper and, most notably, added a raised hood with a large 2-inch bulge that helps contain the big V-8.  Also added to differentiate it from its siblings are Enkei 19-inch lightweight wheels as well as an updated lower rear diffuser that helps accentuate the stacked, quad exhaust system. A dark chrome window trim is new as well as a black IS F SPORT rear lip spoiler. The only exterior badging to set this apart is only having the Lexus logo and IS 500 is small lettering on the trunk.

Also included as standard is an updated version of Lexus Safety System+ that includes a plethora of safety and convenience systems that incorporates an enhanced Pre-Collision System that includes an updated lens camera and radar that now expands the response range and helps the vehicle to better detect bicycles and pedestrians in daylight or low-light conditions.

To help control all the power the IS 500 comes with the same Dynamic Handling Package found on the IS 350 RWD F Sport that includes Adaptive Variable suspension with a Yamaha rear performance dampers and a Torsen limited-slip differential that help to enhance handling and performance. Bringing the car to a halt has now been improved with the addition of larger 14-inch two-piece aluminum rotors up front and 12.7-inch rotors in the rear both being kept cool by adding more aerodynamic enhancements.

The cabin has been dressed up with F Sport badging on the leather-wrapped steering wheel and door scuff plates with IS F Sport footrest accelerator and brake pedals being added as standard.

The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance will only be made available in North America and should be available in dealers in the Fall with pricing and colour choices being made available closer to roll out.

Just when you thought that Porsche couldn’t possibly manage to improve its street legal race prepared GT3 anymore, out pops the new 2022 911 GT3 and improve it they have.

The naturally aspirated flat-six boxer engine now produces a phenomenal 502hp and 345 lb-ft of torque, that puts all the power down to the rear wheels through either a seven-speed PDK transmission or an optional six-speed manual gearbox. The engine, which is almost identical to the track only GT3 cup race car, benefits from six independent throttle bodies that increase the sharp throttle response adding to the already racing pedigree performance. The GT3, using the standard PDK transmission, can now reach 100km in a blistering 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 314km/h.

The biggest change in the GT3 is the introduction of a new double-wishbone front suspension that has been redeveloped from the Le Mans winning RSR – the first time a double-wishbone system has been added to a Porsche production car. This increases handling especially when entering corners at high speed and manages relieve some of the pressures placed on the dampers ensuring the front wheels stay secure and flat on the surface throughout cornering especially on uneven surfaces.

To manage the new front set up the rear suspension has been upgraded with additional ball joints being added to the lower wishbones to help relieve the additional high stress levels incurred at the back end. Special shock absorbers have been added in the rear to increase performance especially when on track. Rear-wheel steering is still standard that increases cornering stability at high speed and aids in tight maneuvers when at low speed.

To handle the additional handling capabilities the front brake discs have been increased by 28 mm to 408 mm, but while being larger the weight has been reduced by 17 per cent. Additionally, new road legal, high performance track-ready tires have been approved as an option for the first time.

Up front the GT3 benefits from an adjustable front spoiler lip and diffuser with cooling intakes being integrated into the lower part of the carbon fibre hood. New side skirts specifically designed for the new GT3 have been added ensuring smooth airflow around the wheels.

What makes the new GT3 stand out is the huge manually adjustable swanneck rear spoiler and a newly designed rear diffuser, this combination – when set up for track use  – can increase the downforce by up to 150 per cent.

Don’t expect any of the luxuries normally associated with Porsche in the cabin. The interior is sparse with all the focus on racing and speed. Four-way adjustable seating is made available as standard with lighter carbon fibre,  full bucket seats being offered  as an option.

New to the GT3 is the new PDK gear shifter in the centre console that can be used to change gears by pushing forward or pulling back and can be used as an alternative to the steering wheel mounted shifter paddles.

A much improved instrument cluster now includes a Track-Screen function that condenses the amount of information shown to the bare minimum. All of the information  that a driver needs to see during high performance driving or racing is now tightly situated around the analog tachometer that allows the driver to take in all needed information with one single glance.

Just to prove how much the new 911 GT3 has improved from the <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/trackworthy-blogs/porsche-911-gt3-turns-twenty/">last model</a>, a time of 6:59.927 was achieved around the 20.8 km long Nürburgring Nordschleife which is 17 seconds faster than the outgoing model. To make this even more impressive it was achieved during a regular fine tuning session of the vehicle.

The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 should be available in the fall of 2021 with pricing being made available closer to then.

February 9th, 2021 - For the last few months Audi have been teasing the automotive world with snippets of information and camouflaged images of their long-anticipated e-tron GT.

Only now have we been given a look at the new e-tron GT and the wait has certainly been worth it.

Audi’s latest introduction to their electric line-up is a bit different, while still following their environmental philosophy, is more about performance, speed and handling and now takes pride of place being Audi’s most powerful production car ever made.

It is built on the same production line as Audi’s high-performance R8, which gives us some insight as to Audi’s intentions as to where this grand tourer fits in their line-up.

The e-tron is designed as an electric four-door coupe that satisfies all of the design characteristics of a grand tourer, while still being able to fulfill its obligation of being a performance sedan. A long-wheelbase, wide track, larger wheels, and of course a sleek lower silhouette gives it a sporty and elegant exterior. The sculptured body starts up front with an elongated hood that flows and rises with the windshield onto a steeply raked roofline that tapers down to the rear integrated spoiler in typical Audi Sportback fashion. The high waistline and extended wheel arches add to the sporty and muscular appearance with the large wheels adding even more to its athletic looks.

Internally, the design focus is targeted towards the driver with the dashboard being slightly angled towards the left. Both the driver and front passenger seating allow for both to be seated in a low sporty position separated by a wide centre console. The touch screen infotainment screen is surrounded by a black piano bezel that gives the appearance of it being suspended above the instrument panel.

The cabin and seating are liveried using a number of sustainable or recycled materials. The seats are upholstered using a combination of faux leather and microfibre materials that are fabricated from recycled materials. The instrument panel is finished with graphite gray or palladium silver paint as standard with an option of matt carbon or open-pore walnut wood being made available.

The cabin is very functional with plenty of space for all passengers to be comfortable, while still having sporty feel and look. The fit and finish exemplify what a luxurious tourer should be.

Audi has taken the high road and has stayed away from adding a huge gaudy centre screen like other manufacturers, this elimination adds to the e-tron GT’s panache and elegant over-all feel.

The drive train of the e-tron GT is what makes it special. It will come in two flavours; the e-tron GT Quattro and the RS e-tron GT that has upgraded handling characteristics. The 85kW battery pack is mounted at the lowest point of the vehicle equally positioned between the front and rear axles balancing the car, as well as giving it a lower centre of gravity to help with performance handling.

Both trim lines have an electric motor mounted up front and the rear. The e-tron GT Quatro has a combined output of 350 kW with the front motor producing 175 kW and the rear 320 kW. Both motors have the ability to store power in reserve for extreme driving situations explaining the total output difference than the total power combination produced by both motors.

The RS e-tron GT produces the same power from the front motor with the rear producing 335 kW adding to an over-all output of 440 kW. The total torque figures released for the RS e-tron GT is cited as 612.2 lb-ft. This allows the GT Quatro to reach 100km/h in 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 245km/h and the RS GT to reach the same speed in a blistering 3.3 seconds and on up to 250 km/h.

Both models are equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive with a front-wheel drive bias. In the event of loss of traction, fast cornering or aggressive acceleration power can be redirected to the rear wheels at speeds that are five times faster than a regular Quattro drive train. The all-wheel drive system continuously monitors the torque distribution between the axles and reacts within a fraction of a second.

The e-tron GT eliminates the need in trying to find a specific charge point by having charge plugs mounted on both sides of the vehicle with the right-hand side having the ability to be able to charge from a DC charger. Charging on an 11 kW AC charger can be completed from empty overnight, and an optional 22kW charger will speed up charging times and should be available at the time of release. The e-tron GT Quattro can travel up to an average of 488 Km while the RS e-tron GT will travel up to 472 km.

The e-tron GT looks like it will be the future of Audi, it manages to incorporate Audi’s environmental commitments without losing any of its powerful and sporty image. I think Audi have managed to make the crossover from internal combustion to volts while adding to the brands appeal.

The e-tron GT is due to hit Canadian dealers sometime in the summer of 2021.

Jeep has put its money where its mouth is and have added even more power and ability to their Wrangler Rubicon model by adding a mighty 6.4-litre, V8 hemi engine to the mix.

The addition of the 392 engine hikes the horsepower to a formidable 470 and ups the torque to 470 lb-ft. This combination helps rocket the 392 to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds – 40 per cent faster than its V-6 sibling and on up to a top speed of just under 160km/h. The top speed is restricted by the huge and standard 33-inch tires mounted on 17-inch wheels.

But don’t be fooled in by its on-road nimbleness, the Rubicon 392 has had its off-road capabilities raised to new levels making it the quickest, most powerful and most capable off-roader Jeep has ever produced. Fuel economy has also been addressed with cylinder deactivation that will shut down four cylinders when the Jeep is cruising on the highway or operating under light loads.

The new engine is linked to  an eight-speed automatic transmission and, unfortunately, no manual gear box will be offered.

To get the necessary  amount of cool air into the engine compartment Jeep engineers have borrowed the hood, with its functional air scoop, from the Gladiator Mojave and have introduced a secondary airflow that will ensure enough cooling is still available even when the main scoop is obstructed by debris or snow.

To enable the Rubicon 392 to ford up to 82.5 cm (32.5-inches) the body has been raised by about five cm (two-inches) and now includes a Hydro-Guide air intake system that has integrated draining points on all three ducts as well as a one-way drain mounted in the airbox that can separate up to 56.7-litres (15 gallons) per minute from the incoming air. This system allows the 392 to operate normally even when a bow wave it pushed up over the hood.

The 392 also comes with a dual-mode exhaust system that operates  automatically, opening the exhaust valves when the engine is under high loads to reduce back pressure. This can also be engaged manually by the driver by means of a button. The quad exhaust tail pipes make sure that the Rubicon 392 sounds more like a muscle car than a off-roader.

To handle the toughest of off-road conditions the chassis has been substantially strengthened by means of upgraded frame rails and front upper control arms. The front and rear suspension has been upgraded as well that now includes high-performance Fox monotube shocks that have been specifically tuned for the Rubicon 392. The heavy-duty axle tubes have been upgraded and the electronic disconnecting front sway-bar comes as standard. The addition of heavy-duty brakes ensure the Rubicon 392 comes to a stop whether traveling at high speed or traversing some heavy off-road obstacles.

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 is easily differentiated by its aggressive styling and extended trapezoidal wheel flares.

Internally the leather seating is finished off with unique bronze stitching as well as Rubicon 392 emblazoned seat backs. A first for Jeep is the leather wrapped performance steering wheel that include wheel-mounted paddle shifters offering the driver more control over gear shifts.

The 2021 Jeep Rubicon 392 will only be offered in the four-door configuration and will be available for sale in the first quarter of 2021 with pricing being made available closer to the release date.

2022 VW Taos-Main

It’s hard to believe that Volkswagen didn’t have an SUV in their lineup until 2003 when they first introduced the Touareg. Since then they have introduced the Tiguan, Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and the company has now given us a glimpse (all be it virtually) of their fifth SUV - the 2022 Taos.
The All-new Taos will slot in just below the Tiguan in the highly contested compact SUV segment. The Taos will be powered by a reengineered 1.5L version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the Jetta sedan.  It will produce 158 hp (an increase of 11hp) and 184 lb-ft of torque all the while, VW claims, delivering outstanding fuel economy.

The front-wheel drive trims will be linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission with the all-wheel drive models getting a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Up front the Taos has a strong stance that is accentuated by the sculptured hood and adaptive LED headlights that still manage to reflect the styling from the larger Atlas Cross Sport.

On the upper trim lines an LED light bar extends from the headlights towards the centre VW badging giving the Taos more character from the front. From the side, the steeply raked A-pillar and high waistline add a sporty look to the Taos with the squared-off wheel arches adding a more rugged stance reminiscent of the Atlas. The 17-inch wheels will be offered as standard, with 18-inch and 19-inch being offered in higher trim levels as an option.

The cabin will benefit from a premium fit and finish throughout, with cloth, two-tone leatherette and leather trims being made available. The dash is uncluttered, clean and fresh, with the infotainment screen being built into the dash with comfort controls mounted below the screen and centre air vents. Automatic headlights, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, eight-way powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats as well as heated side mirrors and washer nozzles are all being made available.

Volkswagen Digital Cockpit comes as standard across the trim levels with wireless charging and app connection being available. The infotainment system is controlled by an 8-inch touch screen or by voice control and includes SiriusXM satellite radio and available navigation. A very cool 10-colour ambient lighting package and an upgraded premium BeatsAudio sound system with eight-speakers are also being offered as an option.

Volkswagen’s IQ. Drive driver assistant technology is available with a plethora of driver and safety enhancements that include; Forward Collision Warning with autonomous braking, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keep assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive headlights, and parking distance control.

The 2022 Taos should be available in the summer of 2021 and will come in three trimlines: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline. Pricing will be announced closer to the launch date.
