I’m sure a lot of guys around my age (40s) can relate to the feeling of pondering life and what we’ve accomplished up to this point. When we feel a shortcoming and are unsure of our worth, a mid-life crisis may ensue. In the past year, I’ve gone through a lot of changes with family and work which have lead me to think about my past, present and future and what I want out of life as I embark to start a new chapter in my career.

When making difficult decisions, sometimes it’s best to take a step back and look at the big picture. I needed a break; some “me time” to reflect and think about my next steps and come up with a game plan for what I want to do career wise and how it will fit into my family dynamic. I love to drive in the countryside where there’s less traffic and a more scenic peaceful space so I decided to take a solo road trip for a week away to find solace and think about the meaning of life.

I recently bought my childhood dream car – a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo. I love the Ferrari’s (Testarossa) and Lamborghini’s (Diablo) of the day but these exotic sports cars still fetch a fair buck (plus the high cost of maintenance) so the 300ZX is a more attainable (mid-life crisis) sports car. Although I have a reliable and fuel efficient <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/acura-csx-more-about-comfort-than-speed/">Acura CSX</a> as a daily driver, it seemed more fitting to take my 25 year-old nostalgic sports car on this Ontario/Quebec driving adventure. My 300ZX had 76,685 KM on the odometer when I departed Mississauga and 78,545 when I got home so the trip was 1,860 KM total.

My plan was to spend two days visiting an old friend who I met in my art program at Humber College. He lives in Pierrefonds Quebec, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec. From there, I would drive to Quebec City to spend a day sightseeing and Ottawa for two days to relax and decompress. My schedule was clear and I had my wife’s support and blessing so I packed my bags and was excited to embark on my sabbatical road trip of a lifetime!

I left my Mississauga home after rush hour on a Monday morning. The drive east on Highway 401 was smooth sailing with a just bit of traffic congestion in Toronto. Highway 401 runs from Windsor to past Cornwall and turns into Highway 20 in Quebec. The highway is smooth and easy to drive with “On-route” service centres every 100 KM or so to provide a washroom break, food and gas. I stopped at the On-route in Mallorytown near Kingston for lunch. My next stop was the Quebec Welcome Centre on Highway 20 just past the border. From there I arrived on the west side of Montreal at evening rush hour. Traffic was heavy however I got to my friends’ house in Pierrefonds just 10 minutes past the time my Garmin GPS had earlier indicated.

The two days spent with my friend Darren were fun and relaxing. We reminisced about old times and lived it up, hitting the town and sightseeing. Montreal, Quebec is an amazing city with so much to see and do. Just walking around downtown provides amusement with an interesting mix of cultures and characters. There are many entertainment and dining options. I recommend checking out the Old Montreal district with its cobblestone roads and beautiful architecture.

In the evening we did some bar hopping in the entertainment district of Montreal and grabbed a cheap hotel in the middle of the action as a convenient place to crash. The hotel is called Hotel Villa on Sainte-Catherine Street East. It is a very old hotel with the smallest elevator I’ve ever seen. The rooms are okay, well good enough for our needs. It is a loud busy area of Montreal and the hotel doesn’t have designated parking so I settled my precious 300ZX in an open public lot across the street from the hotel. The next morning, on our way out of downtown, we swung by the Bell Centre where the Montreal Canadians play to take a photo of the yellow Twin Turbo with a landmark.

The drive from Montreal to Quebec City was the best part of the road trip. Mid-day traffic in Montreal was heavy, worse than Toronto, but once I got out of the city limits it was a leisurely cruise along Highway 20 all the way to Quebec City. The scenic landscape offered a view of rural farmlands and mountains to keep my attention on the road and my surroundings. This part of the trip was approximately 3 hours of driving and 300 KM. There are no service centres on this stretch of Highway 20 so you need to pull off into one of the towns for gas, etc.

Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America. Old Quebec’s narrow cobblestone streets lined with bistros and boutique shops, resembles a European city. There are mostly one-way streets and Old Quebec is very hilly and tricky to drive. I imagine it would be treacherous in the winter. Regardless, I enjoyed cruising around, taking in the sights including Parliament Gardens, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, La Citadelle and the Museum Of Civilization to name a few. There is an abundance of history and museums in Quebec City making it an essential tourist destination for anyone who appreciates old world charm. I stayed at Hotel Acadia in the old part of town. Like most of the hotels in that area, Acadia is old fashioned and beautiful. Parking is in a safe lot behind the hotel, $20 a day.

<center></center><center></center>For me Quebec City represents my first right of passage as a young man, venturing out (without adult supervision) when I went with a group of friends on a high school ski trip during Christmas break 1991/92. My 17th birthday was celebrated on this trip and needless to say we had a lot of fun. Walking around Quebec City brought back memories from two decades ago – a carefree time in my life with minimal responsibility. Now, like many my age, I’m married with children, have a mortgage, cars (4) to maintain and a great magnitude of responsibility. I was enjoying Quebec City but it was time to carry on to my next destination as getting back to reality was only a few days away and I still had a lot to see and do.

The drive from Quebec City to Ottawa is approximately 4.5 hours, 450 KM. The first half along Highway 40 is rather boring with not much interesting to look at as the highway appears to be cut out of a forest. Not the most satisfying experience as I had to drink a Red Bull to keep my attention and my car’s front was covered with bug splatter by the time I got to Ottawa. The best part of driving along Highway 40 is passing through the lovely city of Trois-Rivières. As you approach Laval, Highway 640 takes you to Highway 50 for the more scenic stretch to Ottawa. Most of Highway 50 is one lane so it moves slowly at times but does extend to two lanes periodically to allow passing. I entered Ottawa through Hull, Quebec during evening rush hour. Traffic is light compared to Montreal and Toronto.

Ottawa was the best part of the vacation because I was there for two full days and had more time to relax and reflect. I stayed at the upscale Marriott Ottawa close to all the attractions. I had a magnificent view from my 26th floor room and could see the best part of our nation's capital. Part of my mission on this road trip was to take photos of my car at tourist attractions/landmarks in every city I stayed. Ottawa provided a fantastic scenic backdrop with Parliament Hill, Fairmont Château Laurier and Hull Quebec, which overlooks Ottawa River. I also recommend checking out ByWard Market, Royal Canadian Mint and the many national museums. There is stellar nightlife in Ottawa with several bars and pubs in Rideau Market.

<center></center><center></center>After two well-spent days in Canada’s capital, it was time to head home and back to reality. I could have taken the scenic route along Highway 7 but I was tired and wanted to get back to my family before the kids bed time so I took the most direct route: Highways 416 and 401 to Mississauga. Travel time is 4.5 hours, 470 KM. I was happy to be home with my family for the rest of Labour Day weekend. The kids were back to school the following week and I had a renewed lease on life with a greater appreciation for family plus ambition and motivation to have a productive fall taking on writing and photography assignments as a self-employed contractor.

<center></center><center></center>My 25 year old Nissan 300ZX ran perfectly the entire road trip and felt like a new car. This is a testament to the build quality of many of the Japanese vehicles from that era. The old girl calls for premium 91 octane. I didn’t concern myself with how much I was spending on gas, food and hotels. I wasn’t trying to do this trip on a tight budget. The purpose was to treat myself to a well-deserved getaway and I certainly enjoyed it. These opportunities don’t come along often so I took full advantage of my vacation time.

Road trips are fun if you’re prepared and have an itinerary. It takes the stress out of traveling and you enjoy the experience and feel fulfilled when you get home. I know my sabbatical road trip of a lifetime was just what the doctor ordered (literally). It has helped me gain a greater understanding of life – value family time, health, enjoy your work, don’t waste time being unhappy, and most of all love your car and the people you spend time with, including yourself.

Suggestions for preparing for a long road trip: Have your car’s oil changed and visual inspection to ensure brakes, tires and other vital safety components are in good working order. Plan your route and breaks by looking on Google maps to familiarize yourself with the distance and roads you are travelling. Program destinations into a GPS device (or your cars’ built in navigation system) to guide you throughout your trip. Take a car charger for your mobile phone. Subscribe to CAA or another roadside assistance program. Get medical insurance if travelling outside your home province. Consider pre-booking hotels through travel deal websites such as Hotels.com, Hotwire and Expedia.

Road trip of a lifetime to Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa

For several years my high school friends and I have gone on road trips to U.S. cities to watch NBA basketball games as a reunion event. This year we thought of something different for our annual road trip – see our favourite childhood rock band Guns N’ Roses on their reunion tour. We chose Ottawa as the destination (in August) as a special way to round up the troops for some summer fun.

We each took on a role - Stuart was in charge of getting concert tickets, Kevin booked the hotel and I was looking after transportation. In the beginning there was six of us going so we needed a large vehicle which none of us owned so I reached out to my contacts at Nissan media to see what they had available. I was offered a top of the line Infiniti QX80 Limited and I gladly accepted.

As the weeks drew closer and we firmed up the details, our group of six dropped down to three. We are all in our early 40s with kids, family and work responsibilities which presented too much of a challenge for some of the guys to get away for three days of partying—however the core group remained intact. At this point we didn’t necessarily need a vehicle as big as a QX80 but I already had it booked so I figured let’s roll with it and see what this massive SUV is all about.

Actually I had a pretty good idea what the Infiniti QX80 would be like because I’m a salesman at Direct Nissan in Mississauga and our <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/car-reviews/second-gen-armada-sails-2017/">Nissan Armada</a> is essentially the same vehicle; just twenty three thousand less. Regardless, I wanted to travel in style so I was happy to have the QX80 Limited for nine days which gave me ample time to experience all it has to offer.

The QX80 is Infiniti’s full size, top of the line vehicle with a hulking curb weight of 2,671 kg. It is available in three trims. The base QX80 seven or eight seat configuration lists at $75,650 and offers a host of standard features including semi-aniline leather-appointed seating, Bose 15-speaker cabin surround sound system, climate-controlled front seats and heated steering wheel. Propelling this beast is a 400-hp 5.6-litre V8 with a 8,500 lbs. towing capacity, built in class IV tow hitch, Infiniti All-Mode 4WD and 7-speed automatic transmission.

The QX80 Limited increases the level of luxury to the tune of $93,800 with truffle brown semi-aniline interior with quilted seats and contrast stitching and piping, ultra-suede headliner and pillars, leather-covered grab handles and speaker grilles, open pore matte finish ash wood trim and a slew of advanced driver aids like Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) and Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW). Unique exterior features include 22" forged alloy wheels, dark chrome exterior trim and stainless steel running boards with welcome lights.

Indeed the overall appearance of the QX80 Limited gives the impression of a premium luxury vehicle with all the bells and whistles anyone could possibly want. Driving around in the QX80 I felt like king of the road in one of the largest SUV’s available on the market. It’s interesting how other driver’s give you respect on the road when you want to change lanes and merge into traffic.

My kids also loved driving in it and got a kick out of the built in DVD players in the back of the driver and passenger headrests. Running boards are definitely needed on a truck this size for anyone less then six feet to get in and out. There is an abundance of passenger room and cargo space that came in handy for moving furniture during the time I had the QX80.

My only complaint is its gas consumption. I did 1,170 km’s combined city and highway and my average fuel economy was 15.1 L/100 km, which is typical for a big heavy vehicle with a V8 engine but certainly not what I’m used to. Spending $110 at the pump to fill up with 91-octane premium gas was a tough pill to swallow.

Thankfully my friends were happy to chip in for gas on our Ottawa road trip which took us 500 km each way from Mississauga so we had plenty of time to enjoy the premium Bose audio system, as we got pumped for our date with Guns N’ Roses. The concert was amazing and the band played all their hits so I highly recommend seeing them on this reunion tour if you’re a fan.

We stayed at Les Suites Hotel in the ByWard Market area of Ottawa. We were lucky to get upgraded to a double room suite with a pull out couch so we each had our own area and didn’t have to deal with Kevin’s snoring. Aside from the concert, we toured Ottawa checking out the parliament buildings and many bars and restaurants in “The Market.”

One of the highlights of this trip was driving along the scenic Queen Elizabeth Drive which runs along the Rideau River, blasting “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses and enjoying a perfect summer afternoon as we swung by TD Place Stadium to take a photo of the Infiniti QX80 and watch the band do a sound check before the big show.

As expected we hit heavy GTA traffic on the drive back to Mississauga and this is when the advanced driver aids of the Infiniti QX80 Limited best came into play. I found the intelligent cruise control quite useful to help maintain a safe following distance from the car in front of me. The forward emergency braking and collision warning system certainly helped plus blind spot warning and intervention kept me in check. Parking the Infiniti QX80 was a challenge at times however the Around View Monitor with a virtual 360-degree view and moving object detection made manoeuvring a bit easier.

My overall impression of the Infiniti QX80 Limited is very favourable for someone looking for a full-size premium SUV. The QX80 Limited has good value for performance and features compared to other vehicles in this segment such as the Cadillac Escalade, <a href="http://www.wheels.ca/news/navigator-still-big-but-loaded/">Lincoln Navigator</a> and Lexus LX570.

Personal taste plays a large part in choosing a vehicle like this but one thing’s for sure, the Infiniti QX80 Limited wears its luxury badge with pride as the quality of materials and its fit and finish are top notch. Plus it’s fun to drive with all the power one could want in an SUV albeit with a - you have to pay to play - premium price and premium gas. Not a practical SUV for the vast majority however it more than suited my needs for our boys’ road trip.

More good memories to share and we did it in grand style!

JO GMC designer Michael Stapleton

Canadian native Michael Stapleton was thrilled to return home for the launch of the 2017 GMC Acadia mid-sized SUV at the Canadian International Auto Show. Born in St.Catharines and raised in London, Ontario, Michael Stapleton now calls Warren, Michigan his home where he is the GMC Interior Director of Design. In this position, Michael is responsible for the entire GMC interior product portfolio. Most recently GMC launched the Terrain MCM, Sierra MCM, Canyon Denali, and now the 2017 GMC Acadia.

The 45 year old father of two has done just about everything during his career at General Motors – from designing show cars, to interior and exterior design, and to a key assignment as the Vehicle Design Chief of GM PATAC, Shanghai, China. He now directs a team of five designers who collaborate on creating the interiors of all GMC vehicles sold globally.

"GMC is a premium brand who's owners desire high quality and understated luxury - not as bold as Cadillac so we focus on placing the right materials in the right places to be subtle, durable and refined" explained Stapleton. "We pay close attention to the fine details of fitment to give our GMC interiors functional luxury combined with smart utility while maintaining harmony and comfort."

I sat with Michael in the 2017 GMC Acadia on CIAS media day and he showed me the continuity and balance with the interior design language - a strong centre stack/command centre putting all the pertinent infotainment and driver commands within easy reach. I was impressed with the use of premium soft touch materials and bright aluminum accents, the feeling of structure, refined luxury, comfort and harmony which are the design cues of GMC interiors and a key to the brands global success.

When asked which vehicle is his favourite that he's been involved in the design, Stapleton was stumped to narrow it down to one "It's like asking me to pick my favourite child, I love them all." Then Michael did lean towards the HD pick-up trucks and the new Acadia, which goes on sale this summer.

Michael holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from the prestigious design school at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit. Even though his career hasn't always been in the auto industry, he has remained in Michigan and his passion for automotive brought him back to his roots when GM hired him in 1999. Since then, he's never looked back.

The Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS), now in its 43rd year, is Canada’s biggest auto show with more than 1,000 new cars and light trucks on display from all of the major auto manufacturers. This year’s show features 38 Canadian vehicle premieres that can be seen by the public for the first time at CIAS. The show runs from February 12-21 at the north and south buildings of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC).

The theme of this year’s show is “Your Move” in recognition of the fast-paced, connected world that we live in, where we’ve become so reliant on technology and mobility. All of the automakers recognize this desire to stay connected and are showcasing their latest technology offerings at CIAS.

I attended Media Day on February 11, taking in all of the press conferences where the auto executives discussed new models, technology and safety features. I’m not going to get into all of the auto news that was part of media day but instead I’ll share my top ten favourite displays at the show.

Ten displays worth seeing (in no particular order) at the 2016 CIAS:
<h3>AUDI</h3>

The 2017 Audi R8 5.2 made its Canadian debut at CIAS. This jaw-dropping supercar boasts 610 horsepower from its 5.2 FSI V10 power plant propelling the R8 from 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. With a starting price of $184,000 and $213,900 for the V10 plus trim (seen here), the R8 is one of the few exotic sports cars that you can sit in at the auto show and my personal favourite.

My favourite interior amongst the vehicles at CIAS is that of the BMW M4 Cabriolet. The tasteful combination of premium leather, aluminum trim, carbon fibre with red accent pieces is luxurious and welcoming. The functionality of the cockpit is perfectly laid out with all the controls at easy reach. The M4 Cabriolet is available for public seating at CIAS and can be purchased at a BMW dealership starting at $85,500.

The Auto Exotica exhibit is a must see, showcasing some of the world’s most prestigious automobiles including Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati, Lotus, Tesla, Pagani and McLaren.

Many of the auto manufactures have boutiques and lounges at their booths. The Porsche Driver’s Selection is quite spectacular with a large assortment of model cars, accessories and jewellery.

The Ten Best Displays of the 2016 CIAS

JO Nissan CIAS - CFL TITAN Warrior

With most of the major automotive manufacturers holding press conferences on the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) media day, Nissan saved the best for last with two Canadian unveilings in grand style. Nissan has enjoyed tremendous success in Canada as the fastest-growing automotive brand with 30 consecutive months of retail sales growth. In celebration of this accomplishment, Nissan went all out on media day to highlight two significant models.

Nissan is a major sponsor of the Canadian Football League and called on the CFL to help unveil the TITAN Warrior Concept. In recognition of their longstanding partnership with the CFL, Nissan welcomed nine players representing all CFL teams to pull the tarp off the TITAN Warrior Concept off-road pickup truck.

“We are entering the tenth year of Nissan being the official vehicle provider to the CFL and we are thrilled to have the CFL Commissioner, Mr. Jeffrey L. Orridge and nine players from all the different teams with us to unveil the TITAN Warrior Concept,” said Steve Rhind, director of marketing, Nissan Canada Inc. “In signature Nissan style, but with an unique twist thanks to the CFL’s participation; we put on a visually spectacular show for our press conference attendees. The event encapsulated our two brand’s respective ‘Warrior’ spirit, and accomplished our goals to provide excitement for fans and customers.”

A Canadian native, Nissan TITAN and Warrior Concept lead designer Randy Rodriguez told wheels.ca in an exclusive interview "To me trucks are meant to be vehicles that can do everything and go anywhere. When I was originally working on the TITAN (designing a full-size truck) I thought of it in a more extreme way that emphasized the capability aspect. I usually approach every project that way designing and sketching as more of a pure expression of what the strongest version would be. From there, working with the other groups within Nissan, the design of the TITAN moved to a more appropriate aesthetic that has broader appeal."

Rodriguez explains "The Warrior is closer to the original sketches and design that I had in mind for the Titan XD. The concept TITAN was off road desert inspired and gave me a new canvas to really show the potential of this design theme. The inspiration of the TITAN is from Greek Mythology. Here the Warrior's muscularity is combined with a more robotic and technical look that is downright menacing."

Nissan also launched a NISMO version of their legendary flagship performance car, the GT-R. The 3.8-litre V6 VR38DETT engine has increased output (from standard GT-R models) to 600 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque. Visually, the NISMO GT-R has carbon-fibre and red trim accents, front, rear and side skirts, a large rear spoiler and unique chrome exhaust finishers. The GT-R NISMO holds the volume production car lap record of 7:08.68 at the famed Nürburgring Race Track.

The <a href="http://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/vehicles/tacoma/overview" target="_blank">Tacoma</a> is all-new for 2016 offering serious capability for adventures – whether on road or off. New available features include Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select, a locking rear differential, GoPro® camera mount and Qi wireless charging.

Introduced in 1995, the Tacoma is now entering its third generation. The Tacoma starts at $28,345 and is available in five trims; base SR, mid-level SR5, TRD Off Road, TRD Sport and range topping Limited. It is also offered in Access Cab and Double Cab configurations with long or short bed sizes.

The two engine options are a 2.7L 4 cylinder producing 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission or 5-speed manual. Towing capacity is 3,500 lb. The 3.5L V6 delivers 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque with a towing capacity of up to 6,500 lb; its advanced first-in-segment Atkinson Cycle D-4S V6 engine was awarded the 2016 Best New Innovation Technology award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). This engine will be offered with new automatic and manual transmissions, both having 6 speeds.

Toyota has seen increased sales in recent years with the Tacoma as it sits atop the competition in the mid-size truck segment with a tougher and more refined interior plus a sleek aggressive exterior design to match its performance prowess. 2016 Toyota Tundra

The Tundra is Toyota's full-size <a href="http://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/vehicles/tundra/overview" target="_blank">pickup truck</a> available in multiple configurations; five trim levels and two engine choices. Built in San Antonio Texas it is also designed and engineered in North America.

Tundra debuted in 2000 and is now in its second generation. 2014 saw a major refresh to the exterior and interior including a new more chiseled appearance, and class-up interior refinements. Under the hood is where it counts, and the i-FORCE 4.6L 8 Cylinder power has been increased to 310 hp and 327 lb-ft of torque. The powerful i-FORCE 5.7L V8 boasts 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. Toyota introduces the all-new 2016 Tacoma and Tundra TRD Pro

I grew up on a tobacco farm in Rodney Ontario, a small farming community southwest of London. The first vehicles I ever drove were our farm trucks; a Dodge Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado or Ford F-150, my Dad owned them all at one point. The domestic new auto dealers were the only ones in our area and if we wanted to buy a new import car, we had to go to the big city (London).

I drove the farm trucks when I was a kid, even though I was too short to reach the floor pedals, I sat on an older relatives’ lap with the steering wheel in hand. I have so many fond memories of growing up on the farm including driving all of the tractors and other equipment, long before I had a drivers’ licence. Living in a rural area without public transportation or a taxi service, all the kids were eager to get their drivers’ licence as soon as they turned 16 – and buy a car, whatever they could afford, just as a way to get around.

Most teens in my area would borrow their parents car but that wasn’t good enough for me. I dreamed of having a Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari Testarossa like the one in my Dad’s favourite TV show Miami Vice. The coolest car my Dad ever had was a 1986 Pontiac Fiero. I was so proud to ride in it but he got rid of the Fiero before I got to drive it.

I got my beginner drivers’ licence on my sixteenth birthday in 1991 and a full G licence as soon as I was eligible - three months later. I took the driving test in my parents’ Pontiac Grand Prix, a nice family car that they let me borrow when ever I wanted (within reason). Being a young “car guy” the family sedan wasn’t what I really wanted to drive and I had been saving for years to get my own car – a sports car like Dad’s Fiero.

When Dad was shopping for a sports car in 1986, he looked at the Nissan 300ZX and Mazda RX-7 but settled on the less costly Pontiac Fiero. The Fiero was a good looking car but had lots of mechanical problems so Dad got rid of it after a few years. I remember him saying he should have spent the extra money and got the car he really wanted – the 300ZX.

In 1992 after driving the family car for a year I was determined that it was time for me to have my own wheels. I’d saved up a few thousand dollars from my summer job in the tobacco harvest and asked Dad to help me buy a nice sports car. This quest turned into a wonderful bonding experience for the two of us. My favourite car at the time was the current Nissan 300ZX which was not realistic (starting at 40K) so Dad suggested looking for a used previous generation model; the one he wanted years ago.

We went to a car auction in London and saw three Nissan 300ZX’s – a 1990 Twin Turbo, 1986 Turbo and 1984 non-turbo. The '90 was out of my price range, and the two older 300’s were in rough shape so we didn’t bid on them. I remember wanting the 1990 Twin Turbo so much and begging Dad to bid on it. He told me to “be patient and one day I’ll have that car.”

After a few months of searching through the classified listings in Auto Trader Magazine (before the days of the internet) we found a 1984 Nissan 300ZX Turbo in fair condition with reasonable mileage. Dad and I made a special trip to Toronto to look at the Z. It was beautiful, British Racing Green with tan leather interior. Dad negotiated a good price and we brought it home that day. Dad drove the ZX with a temporary permit and I drove his Grand Prix.

The 1984 Nissan 300ZX Turbo was my pride and joy for the four years I owned it. I was 17 years old and had the nicest car of any kid (or teacher) at my high school. I have so many fond memories with that car; camping in Grand Bend, cruising along the Port Stanley beach boardwalk and showing up in style at my prom.

What stands out the most about my experience with owning such a nice car at a young age was how it increased my social confidence and popularity with my peers. I didn’t have much going for me in high school. I was short, not very athletic and socially awkward; but the 300ZX made me feel good. I felt accepted during those difficult teenage years.

This was also the car that started my passion for performance modification. I installed an Alpine CD player and upgraded the speakers. A performance muffler further improved the cars’ sound and appearance. The most significant improvement was having the car painted a brilliant pearl white and tinting the windows for a sharp contrast. I also had the aluminum wheels refinished with gold accents.

When I think back to my beloved first car, I think about what Dad said to me when we were shopping for it and how much I wanted the current 300ZX model. He said, “be patient and one day you’ll have one.” Dad was happy for me when I bought my 1995 300ZX in 2009. He especially liked the colour – pearl white like the previous one we restored together. Dad passed away in 2014 before I bought my “Yellow Pearlglow” Twin Turbo. I miss Dad and I miss my original 1984 300ZX but I know that he is right there with me whenever I take my sports cars out for a pleasure cruise in the countryside.

My First Car - 1984 Nissan 300ZX

JO Acura NSX - 1991

When the revolutionary Acura NSX came out in 1990, I was awe struck by its exotic good looks. The Automotive media loved it too and heralded the NSX as the Japanese supercar to rival the Italians. Indeed the NSX lived up to the hype and was an extraordinary sports car in the early 90s boasting Honda quality and reliability with exotic supercar style and performance. All this at a significantly lower sticker price than the comparable Ferrari 348.

The NSX was introduced as an entry level exotic with a price range of $80-90,000 Canadian. As a mid-engine rear-wheel-drive high performance sports car, the NSX’s main competition was the Lotus Esprit Turbo, Porsche 911 and the Ferrari 348. Most supercars of the era, were not what they are today. They were temperamental, needed constant servicing, difficult to see out of, difficult to drive and were generally better at being garage-queens then something you could drive on the regular (911 excluded). Enter the NSX, which was a revelation. The mechanicals were Accord reliable, while the easy controls and excellent forward vision made it a pleasure to pilot.

NSX stands for New Sportscar eXperimental. The first generation prototype debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989. The all-aluminum 3.0L DOHC V6 engine produced 270 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The NSX was one of the first production vehicles to utilize Honda's now ubiquitous VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system boasting a high rev range (8,000 RPM redline). The induction noise alone from this gem of an engine was worth the price of admission.

The NSX was the first production car to feature an ultra-light all aluminum monocoque chassis, front and rear double wishbone suspension with forged control arms. Brazilian Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna was highly influential in the development of the NSX chassis and suspension. NSX defined Acura’s approach to “Precision Crafted Performance.” Its cutting-edge design and innovative technology provided accessible supercar performance for much less than the established Italian and German nameplates of the time.

Beautifully crafted inside and out, the NSX had a driver centric cockpit inspired by the F-16 fighter jet. All of the controls were within easy reach, a fine example of Honda’s excellent ergonomics that we still see today. Through its 15 year production run (1991-2005) the NSX saw significant changes in 1995 with the introduction of a standard targa-top roof. In 1997 the engine saw an increase in displacement from 3.0 to 3.2L increasing horsepower to 294 along with a much more refined 6-speed manual transmission. 2002 saw a facelift with fixed xenon HID headlamps replacing the original pop ups.

Total worldwide sales of the first generation NSX were approximately 18,000 units making it a relatively rare and exclusive car. I seldom see them on the road and they always catch my eye. A used NSX still fetches a fair dollar (average $40-50K for an early model) and are starting to appreciate in price. This might be that last chance to own this historical car before it becomes a collectors item for the wealthy. The departure of the NSX left a void in the Honda/Acura sports car hierarchy so it was only a matter of time before another supercar came to fruition.

The second generation NSX Concept made it’s debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show with the optimism that a production model wasn’t too far off. The concept was seen on the auto show circuit in 2015. Currently slated for production, the 2017 Acura NSX will be available to order in late February 2016.

Designed and developed in North America and assembled at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the 2017 Acura NSX will have a Canadian MSRP of $189,900 and will top out at $250,100 when fully equipped.

The new NSX will carry forward the fundamental principals of the original, providing an exhilarating driver-centric experience with incredible performance at a price far less than a similarly equipped Ferrari. The question still remains. Will it be the game-changer the original was, or blend into the background with the cornucopia of exotics available today. It is a stunningly beautiful car and like many exclusive and coveted vehicles, supply will likely not keep up with demand.

10. 1990 - Present Subaru Legacy</blockquote>

The Legacy sedan has been around since 1990 and has gotten better with each generation. The current sixth generation Legacy won the coveted Automotive Journalist Association of Canada (AJAC) 2015 Canadian Car of the Year Award for its overall outstanding quality and driving characteristics. Available with a 2.5L 4-cylinder Boxer engine or 3.6L 6-cylinder Boxer, continuously variable transmission (CVT) or 6-speed manual, all Legacy models are equipped with Subaru's symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive system.

The SVX luxury performance coupe was a very unique looking Subaru. The distinctive design element was the signature window-within-a-window. The SVX was the most expensive Subaru model at the time and the company lost money producing it, however it was still significant to showcase the Japanese automaker's performance and technology advancements. Its 3.3L Boxer horizontally opposed flat-six made 231 horsepower and 228 lb-ft torque - impressive numbers for the early 1990s.

The funky looking Baja was different from any other automobile being produced during its lifecycle and that's what Subaru wanted, something special. A car-truck hybrid, the four-door Baja was based on the Subaru Outback and its open-bed made it unique. Baja was all-wheel drive and very versatile and certainly has a place on this list.

The BRAT was a quirky looking little pick-up truck sold in many markets under other nameplates except Japan. Its advantage over other small pick up trucks was its four-wheel drive capabilities. The BRAT was powered by Subaru's EA engine and was available with a Turbo and either automatic or manual transmissions.

The 360 was Subaru's first automobile whose nameplate was derived from its small 356 cc engine displacement. Production reached 392,000 over its 12-year model run. Nicknamed the Ladybug, the 360 was one of Japan's most popular cars and was available as two-door, station wagon, convertible and sport model variants. The two-door, rear engine city car weighed only 1,000 pounds and complied with Japan's light car (Kei car) regulations during its time.

After driving a friend's Legacy GT Wagon I know why he loves it so much. The street was covered with dense snow and the Legacy ploughed through it with ease. When I drove the GT Wagon on dry days, I was amazed by the gusto from the 2.5L turbo Boxer engine putting down 265 horsepower. The GT Wagon was available with automatic Sportshift transmission and 6-speed manual. This magnificent family hauler can do it all around the neighbourhood and on the racetrack.

Jointly developed with Toyota (Scion FR-S) the BRZ is the only rear-wheel drive vehicle in the current Subaru line-up. This 2+2 coupe has become extremely popular as an affordable performance sports car and can be easily modified and tuned. Known as the Toyota GT86 and FT86 in other markets, BRZ stands for Boxer engine, Rear-wheel drive, and Z for the zenith. There are subtle trim and suspension differences between the BRZ, FR-S and GT86, however they all share the same 2.0L Dual Overhead Cam, 16-valve, horizontally opposed, 4-cylinder Boxer engine making 200 horsepower. This adrenaline pumping sports car possesses a low centre of gravity and sport-tuned suspension system for razor-sharp handling. Starting at $27,395 (MSRP), it's an incredible value and a future classic.

When the much-anticipated Impreza WRX arrived in North American showrooms in 2002, it was an instant success. This was the first turbocharged Subaru available in Canada. With its signature "bug eyed" front, pronounced hood scoop and chiselled good looks, the WRX got the attention of tuners and rally racers for its outstanding performance and handling characteristics. All WRX models feature Subaru's ubiquitous Boxer engine and symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive system making the WRX a winner on the rally track circuit and in the hearts of Subaru enthusiasts.

The 2004 WRX STI was the first STI (Subaru Tecnica International) model available in North America. The 2.5L Flat 4 Boxer engine put down a whopping 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. The STI is no sleeper with a huge hood scoop, rear spoiler, massive brakes and gold wheels, this was a legend in the making and set the stage for all the other STI performance models that have followed. The current WRX STI boosts 305 horsepower.

This limited edition wide body coupe was produced to commemorate Subaru's 40th anniversary and success in FIA World Rally Championship racing. 22B STI was sold in Japan, UK and Australia and is a coveted collectors item amongst Subaru enthusiasts. The turbocharged 2.2L engine made an incredible 276 horsepower. All 22B STI examples are dark blue with fender flared wide body trim, a unique hood and adjustable rear wing. Bilstein suspension, red STI brake callipers, and 17" gold wheels complete the sporty appearance.

The Impreza 2.5RS coupe was introduced in 1998 to the Canadian market as the first rally inspired Subaru available to the everyday consumer. The 2.5RS had the same body style and AWD system that was being used by the Prodrive tuned powerhouse Subaru’s that were winning races in the World Rally Circuit. The 2.5RS was the most significant Subaru model to captured the imagination of performance enthusiasts and contribute towards the popularity of Subaru in the rally world. The 2.5RS looked aggressive with it's bulging hood scoop, large rear spoiler, gold coloured alloy wheels plus the 2.5L flat four engine put out a respectable 165 horsepower making it a fun car to drive.

Derek Serianni, administrator of the Toronto Subaru Club said, "the 2.5RS was the car that started it all for Subaru enthusiasts in Canada because it was the first rally inspired Subaru we could get our hands on. Our club was initially formed in 1998 as the 2.5RS Club of Toronto, which goes to show what an impact it was on the scene back then. In 2000 we re-branded the club as The Toronto Subaru Club as Subaru's became more popular and our membership base started reflecting this."

“With each new model iteration, we are listening to the needs of our customers and the current generations of our product portfolio is proof positive that we are resonating more and more with Canadians,” commented Joe Felstein from Subaru Canada. “We are on track for our fourth consecutive annual sales record this year.
