Dual motor BMW i4 xDrive40

BMW has added another all-wheel drive version of its<a href="https://www.wheels.ca/reviews/first-drive-2022-bmw-i4"> all-electric i4 sedan</a>. The i4 xDrive40 delivers 396 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque and uses one motor at each end to provide AWD. The xDrive40 uses the same 81.5 kWh battery as the rear-drive 40 and the AWD M50 and is set to deliver an estimated 494 km of range. The i4 can charge at up to 205 kW. Pricing starts from $69,900 and the first units should arrive here in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Sentra Cup returns

Nissan has announced the return of one of the most entertaining racing series in Canada. The Sentra Cup hits the track on Saturday, May 27th at Circuit Mont-Tremblant. It is the third year of Sentra Cup racing, and nine years if you count the Micra Cup that came before. <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/valerie-limoges-becomes-first-female-driver-to-win-the-nissan-sentra-cup">Valérie Limoges</a>, the first woman to win a Canadian national road race series overall title, is looking to make it two in a row this year. All Nissan owners can come to watch the event for free by registering at Nissan's site. There are six races set for this year's season.

Custom Range Rovers

Range Rover is adding a new SV Bespoke commissioning service that lets buyers make their Autobiography and SV models even more custom and more what they want. Prospective buyers can visit a special suite in the UK or select retailers to pick from a wider range of materials and colours. There are up to 391 interior colourways and 230 exterior finishes. Also new for the Range Rover this year is a new P550e plug-in hybrid with 542 hp. A twin-turbo 48V mild hybrid gas version is also new, with 606 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

New Mercedes camper vans coming

Mercedes-Benz announced some of its van plans for the future, including an all-new van-specific electric vehicle platform. The new platform would allow for front and all-wheel drive, varying van lengths, and both a full and mid-size van to be built on the same bones. In addition to the usual commercial customers, Benz will be chasing the camper and vanlife enthusiast this time around. Mercedes-Benz will be developing in-house camping versions of its vans along with RV industry partners. Expect the new EV platform around 2026.

Ineos Grenadier coming to Canada

Ineos is bringing the Grenadier SUV to Canada in early 2024, starting from $91,929. The rugged SUV will get BMW power and infotainment, but it is designed as a heavy-duty replacement for the original Land Rover. The Grenadier comes with standard 4x4 and an electrical system meant to make adding accessories simple and easy. Trailmaster trims come with pre-wired points for lights. The Grenadier will also be highly customizable, offering buyers their choice of luxury appointments as well as off-road extras.

A new Toyota Tacoma doesn't come around often. It's part of the midsize pickup's charm; the durability, dependability, and resale that it earns by only undergoing slight changes year over year over year. That's why the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is such a big deal. It's new from the ground up, full of upgrades and surprises including the model's first-ever hybrid and the return of the manual transmission.

It still looks like a Tacoma, even though there's a lot of Tundra in the equation, especially on the chrome-heavy Limited spec truck. Toyota's designers in California took inspiration from both trucks as well as the company's Baja racers to capture "the extreme spirit of offroad adventure."

Under the new Taco is a new frame, based on the laser-welded high-strength frame used in the Tundra. Toyota reinforced the crossmembers for higher payload capability (up almost half a ton to 1,709 lbs in hybrid models). That extra payload is designed for overlanders, Toyota understands that its intermediate truck buyer is doing more with their pickups than ever before.

The frame gets disc brakes at all four corners for the first time. This is sure to be contentious with some die-hards, but dropping the rear drums should seriously improve the truck's braking feel. Though peak towing isn't exactly up as a result, the max is 6,500 pounds, slightly under some grades of the 2023 model.

If that's not enough, the Tacoma will also get coil springs at the rear along with a new multi-link suspension. The SR5 grade will still get leaf springs, but the rest get the coils.

Coils or not, Toyota is changing up its suspensions to make each grade feel better suited to its purpose. That means different shock tuning for each one. It also means new Fox QS3 three-position adjustable shocks with remote reservoirs (though the adjustment is not remote). It also means ARB Old Man Emu shocks for the newly added Trailhunter model and fully adaptive dampers for the luxury Limited trim.

Toyota's base engine is a 2.4L turbo-four making 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The truck will be 4x4 only in Canada (which means no PreRunner trim) and an eight-speed automatic is standard. Limited gets a new full-time 4x4 system, another Taco first.

You'll be able to order the 2024 Tacoma with a six-speed stick. The three-pedal choice will be an option on TRD Off Road and TRD Sport, but it will make eight fewer ponies and seven fewer torques than with the auto.

For the first time in a Tacoma you'll be able to get a hybrid. Badged i-Force Max like in the Tundra, this pairs the 2.4L four with an electric motor. Total output is 326 hp and a whopping 465 lb-ft of torque, sent through the eight-speed auto. The hybrid system is optional on TRD Off Road and standard on Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

All 2024 Tacomas will be four-door Double Cab models in Canada, though five and six-foot box lengths will be offered.

The basic SR5 trim gets much less basic than before. Smart key is standard, as is a 7.0-inch gauge display and 8.0-inch centre screen with Toyota's latest multimedia. Heated seats are even standard now, as is Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. That upgraded safety system includes radar cruise, pre-collision system, and all of the usual driver aids.

TRD Sport gets colour matched door handles and fender flares, plus a suspension tuned more for on-pavement driving. TRD Off Road gets more serious with Bilstein monotube shocks, multi-terrain select, an electronic rear locker, and composite skid plates. 33-inch tires are optional, along with the TRD Pro's new sway bar disconnect. This one has a larger 12.3-inch digital cluster.

Limited gets adaptive shocks and full-time 4x4, along with power running boards, a head-up display, and chrome trim. It comes with a 14-inch centre screen, and, gasp, heated and ventilated front seats plus a heated wheel. It also is the first to get Toyota's new JBL Flex portable speaker that mounts in the dash.

TRD Pro gets all of the really good off-road stuff including the Fox shocks already mentioned and TRD control arms. It has an aluminum front skid plate, 33-inch Goodyear rubber, and an electronic rear locker.

New this year, the TRD Pro adds rocker protection, an ARB rear bumper with red recovery hooks, and a front sway bar disconnect that increases suspension articulation. With the standard hybrid drive it gets a 2400-watt AC inverter with a pair of plugs and some pre-wired DC accessory switches. Like in the past, it has a Toyota heritage grill and LED fog lights.

The TRD Pro's real trick, though, is a new driver's seat. The IsoDynamic Performance Seat has an air and oil shock absorber to help keep the driver behind the wheel when the terrain gets rough. The seat can move vertically and laterally, and the driver can tune it or turn the system off with a lever.

Then there's the Trailhunter. The first in a new line of overlanders Toyota previewed last year, this one is built to "go far." Old Man Emu position-sensitive shocks are just the start. This truck has 33-inch tires that raise the ride height by about two inches, while a high-clearance exhaust tip, stamped steel skid plates, and rock rails help keep the truck intact over obstacles.

The truck has a high-mount air intake, bed utility bar with Molle panels, and loads more ARB parts. The team at Australian off-roaders ARB even came to Toyota facilities to finish the package. Built-in roof rack attachments that are standard on all grades let you mount cargo to the top of the truck, and multiple available bed racks make adding rooftop tents a breeze. Trailhunter gets some of the TRD Pro's best bits like the rear locker, ARB bumper, and front sway bar disconnect.

The Trailhunter gets loads of bronze accents including its heritage grille. There is a 20-inch LED light bar standard, Rigid fogs that show white or yellow on command, and campsite lighting for around the truck. It gets bronze wheels and will offer that bronze oxide paint in the photos. If that has you wondering about the next TRD Pro special paint job, expect that announcement in a few months.

Toyota is planning for the four-cylinder models of the Tacoma to hit showrooms late this year, with pricing for the new pickup to follow. If you want a hybrid, which is the only way to get some of the best trims, you'll need to wait for next spring.

2024 Toyota Tacoma gets a ground up redesign

New Ranger

Ford has just launched the new Ranger pickup for North America. The brand's midsizer is wider and longer. It also offers a new 315 hp 2.7L V6 on top of the carryover 270 hp 2.3L four-cylinder. Despite the changes, and a new frame, max towing and payload are nearly the same at 7,500 and 1,805 pounds, respectively. Instead, Ford is leaning on more towing tech including 360-degree cameras and available Pro Trailer Backup Assist to make towing easier. Getting into the bed is also easier thanks to a new integrated step, while the bed can now handle a sheet of plywood between the wheel arches. In-cabin changes include wireless charging, larger centre console and door pockets, and improved folding rear seats to give owners more space for bits and bobs.

Ford also has a new Ranger Raptor, adding its top-shelf off-road trim to the lineup for the first time. Ranger Raptor includes long-travel Fox live valve shocks, a 405 hp 3.0L V6, locking differentials, and a giant Ford-lettered grille. Orders for the new Ranger open later this month. Expect more details and pricing in a few months.

718 Spyder RS will offer breathtaking performance

Porsche's 2024 718 Spyder RS is the fastest open-top 718 model yet. The RS gets a 493 hp flat-six and is lighter and lower than the standard 718. Think of it as the open-roof version of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and you've got the idea. It will only be offered with Porsche's seven-speed PDK automatic and should hit 100 km/h in just over three seconds. Active suspension management and a mechanical limited-slip differential are standard. It also has centre-lock wheels and ball joints in place of bushings for suspension mounting, though the suspension is slightly softer than the hard-top GT4 RS. Which makes sense for an open-air car. RS means fabric door straps and a manual top. Carbon fibre parts will be offered to help trim weight even more. Expect the model on the road later this year.

New Lexus models

Lexus is getting two new models ready, one of which will be a completely new segment for the brand. That new one is the 2024 Lexus TX. A Lexus version of the Toyota Grand Highlander, this is a full-size three-row crossover. Lexus hasn't played in this segment before, instead, it has the smaller three-row RX L and the body-on-frame LX. This one should be a competitor to the likes of the Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator as well as BMW's X7. The second is the latest version of the Lexus GX. This off-roader has historically been related to the Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma, and with those models being replaced soon, the GX is also due. All we've seen so far is an aggressive peek at a headlight and a new hood.

Volvo EX30 teaser

Volvo is also teasing a new electric crossover. The EX30 is set for a full reveal on June 7th, and we don't know much other than that it will be small. Does small mean below the XC40 and C40 Recharge models or will it be a replacement for those two? We'll wait and see. Both 40-model EVs are quite new, suggesting they would stick around, but fitting a smaller model under those could be tough in the Canadian marketplace.

Toyota to introduce 10 new EVs by 2026

Toyota might be behind in EVs at the moment, but its latest announcement shows that the car company plans on catching up in a hurry. The company talked about a three-row electric vehicle during its annual financial briefing this month, part of plans to sell 1.5 million EVs per year by 2026. The model is set to be built in the U.S., with battery packs made in North Carolina. It will be one of 10 new EVs the automaker plans to debut by 2026, with those new models offering much more electric range than its current EVs. Toyota said we can expect double the range of its current line. To go with it, a Lexus EV was teased, with an incredibly sleek shape and plenty of sharp angles.

Sometimes making one key change transforms a vehicle into something special. Other times, that one key change just highlights the other parts of the model that need changing. Adding the wonderful Lexus Interface infotainment system to the 2023 Lexus UX falls firmly into the latter camp.

Lexus changed more than just that one thing for the 2023 UX. It dropped the gas engine, for example. Now the 181 hp hybrid system and its 2.0L four-cylinder engine is the only model of the UX available. It's called the UX 250h and was such a substantial increase in power and fuel economy (with little change to price) that the UX 200 made little sense.

The luxury automaker also adds a new F-Sport trims to the UX for the first time. F-Sport trim models come with adaptive performance shocks, sports seats, paddle shifters, active sound control and a unique mesh grille on the entry grade, with a 12.3-inch screen with nav, adaptive lights, leather dash, front seat adjustment memory, and more on the F-Sport 2 grade. F-Sports even have a steering rack brace, an effort to help improve steering feel and response, because Lexus is convinced that sport is what its buyers want.

How convinced? The 2023 Lexus UX is more rigid than last year because the company added 20 new spot welds. A lot of time, effort, and probably cost for a change that average buyers might never even notice. We appreciate it, though, because a stiffer vehicle chassis is also one that is quieter and generally more comfortable.

My tester is not either of those F-Sports. This is the new one, the F-Sport Design trim, which gets fog lights, the F-Sport grille and side skirts, and 18-inch wheels. It doesn't have fancy shocks, but it does have ventilated front seats, which might be the smarter move in this category.

Lexus has also added some new safety systems for 2023. The Lexus Safety System 2.5+ gets an upgraded camera as well as tweaked radar that lets the pre-collision system better detect cyclists and pedestrians in low-light conditions. The exact conditions where you are most likely to have trouble spotting them yourself.

The lane recognition function has been tweaked as well. The system is meant to keep you centred in your lane and now it has a smoother operation. But it still wasn’t smooth enough for me to keep it on.

Lastly, the radar cruise control has a new curve speed control function that slows it down based on the upcoming corner. I'm going to get back to this new feature later, but I'll warn you I don't have many nice things to say.

First, back to that one key change. Lexus swore by its touchpad-based infotainment system, while reviewers swore at it. The system is gone, replaced in nearly all Lexus models by a new touch-based system.

The UX is one of the last to get the new system, but it's still extremely fresh. It rolled out from launch to nearly every model in less than two years.

More than new, the system is good. Clear and crisp graphics and plenty of processing power to make sure it is responsive.

The system has natural voice response commands, and they'll make most of the changes you want to make. If the system can't make the change, it will usually at least deposit you in the right menu.

There's Google cloud-based points of interest data, live traffic, and live agent destination assistance. I can't say enough good things about this system.

Remember how I said that can just bring attention to the rest of the vehicle's issues? In the 2023 UX that starts immediately beside the big new screen.

The Lexus UX has a mostly digital dash (it's fully digital on the top trims). The text and graphics match those of the old infotainment interface. They do not match the new one. So the two sets of screens are very clearly mismatched. It's a shocking lack of attention to detail. Was it overlooked, or a cost-cutting measure? Either way, it is not what we expect from luxury vehicle.

Inside the UX is cramped. This is a small cabin, and that's not just because of my well-known large size. A lack of head, knee, and shoulder room will have even smaller passengers wishing for more space. Yes, this is a subcompact crossover, but there are others that don't have tiny cabins.

Trunk space is at a premium, too. Competitors in the segment have 50 percent greater (or even more) space behind the rear seats than the 487 L Lexus offers. Yes, there is a bit more available below the removable floor, but it isn't much. A high load floor and narrow opening make it tough to make the best of the room you do get.

So back to how it drives.

While the UX's driveline makes 181 hp, the little crossover never feels as quick as that would suggest. In my experience, that's common to hybrids, especially models with an eCVT like this one. The same transmission effect means loads of drone when you're hard into the throttle, and that increases cabin noise.

Toyota (the parent of Lexus) has largely remedied this in its latest hybrid system, which debuted in the 2023 Prius. But this model is still on the older system.

Ride and handling are distinctly just to the wrong side of average. The UX 250h is comfortable enough to not be noteworthy, but not enough to coddle. Its handling is predictable enough to ignore, but not enough to inspire confidence. Were it not for the cramped cabin and the noise levels, it would be a completely unremarkable experience.

While that sounds like a criticism, a largely unremarkable experience is likely exactly what the brand's buyers are looking for. A model that gets you from A to B with zero trouble for 10 years.

In the case of Lexus, they want that with some more premium finishes and that L badge on the grille. This one has the L on the grille, but the new screen highlights finishes that aren't quite up to segment standards.

Forget about BMW, Acura, Cadillac, and Lincoln, the UX has trouble keeping up with Buick and even Mazda. The fit and finish offered in a <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/vehicle-reviews/review-2022-mazda-cx-30-turbo">Mazda CX-30 GT</a> tops this UX, and it's many thousands of dollars less. On the other hand, it's unlikely that a Mazda dealer will touch the level of service offered by a Lexus showroom and its legendary customer experience. There's more to a brand than just its vehicles.

I said I would circle back to the curve speed control function, and here it is. The idea sounds great; if the Lexus system detects you're coming in hot to a sharp corner, the adaptive cruise control slows down ahead of time.

In practice, that's not how it worked. Instead, on divided highways, the system would decide that the speed limit was at least 20 km/h too quick for the bend in the road. In response, it would slam on the brakes.

The kicker was that not only was the braking action abrupt and severe, but it was also nearly always too late. On the majority of occasions, the UX would slow down only after the apex of the corner. The vehicle had already navigated the sharpest part of the bend before deciding to slow down. The feature was irritating, but also completely unhelpful.

I was not happy, my passengers were not happy, and the vehicles behind me were absolutely not happy. They let me know, expressing their displeasure with an extended finger or a horn. Lexus is normally at the forefront of adding driver assists, but this one needs some work.

My sentiments about the UX 250h can be summed up by its fuel economy; looks good on paper, but the experience didn't quite measure up. The official rating is 5.7 L/100 km city, 6.2 highway. My mixed driving returned an indicated 7.8. I'm used to beating the official figures, not falling well below them.

The 2023 Lexus UX 250h will no doubt appeal to buyers who want the easy ownership experience and excellent customer service they've come to expect from the brand. It looks good from the outside, and it has that wonderful new screen. But it is cramped, noisy, and just not good enough in such a competitive arena.

This UX is trading on the equity of its badge, and Lexus can do better. Whether it has to in order to keep bringing in buyers is another issue altogether.

Quebec proposes stricter emission targets

The Province of Quebec is looking at tightening its existing zero-emissions vehicle mandates. Under the proposed new rules, automakers in that province would have to hit 50 percent ZEV sales more than a year earlier. Well ahead of both current provincial and proposed federal guidelines. Hitting 100 percent is still set for 2035, but the plan is to get to 91 percent by 2031. The new targets would come with new penalties, as well. Fines of $20,000 per non-ZEV unit instead of $5,000. Under the rules, automakers would be able to purchase credits from other automakers who have exceeded their target. Last year, around 12 percent of new vehicles sold in the Province were ZEVs.

Impreza pricing

Subaru has priced the all-new 2024 Impreza. The reworked AWD hatch will start from $26,795 in Canada, $3,500 more than last year. However, the 2024 is not available with a manual transmission, accounting for much of that base price hike. It also comes standard with Subaru's EyeSight driver assistance suite. Touring is $29,995 and comes with a larger single-screen center display. It also adds a heated leather wheel. RS includes a 2.5L 182 hp boxer-four for $31,795, and at the top of the line is the Canada-only Sport-tech trim which includes navigation and DriverFocus distraction mitigation for $34,795.

Improved Mach-E, orders open

Ford is reopening orders for the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, and the next batch will get some serious upgrades and even bigger price cuts. All standard-range models get a new battery that adds 4 kWh as well as 45 hp to the total on AWD models. The new battery can charge more quickly as well, taking five fewer minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent. BlueCruise, the brand's hands-off driver assistant, will be included on all Mach-E models, but a subscription is required to use it. Premium Standard Range models see their prices cut by $3,000 for RWD and $2,250 for AWD respectively. The Premium Extended Range models get a massive $11,000 and $10,250 taken off of their MSRP, meaning that both should now qualify for federal incentives. Order books should be open again soon, and Ford says it has increased production.

Volvo XC40 recharge and C40 get more range

Volvo is increasing the range of its C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge models by adding single-motor RWD variants for the first time in Canada. The single-motor vehicles get a new 248 hp permanent magnet motor and an 82 kWh battery pack. This gives the XC40 a range of 471 km and the sleeker C40 477 km. The new battery can charge at up to 200 kW. Twin Motor versions also get new motors that help boost range. The rear motor is now a 255 hp permanent magnet motor, while the front is a 147 hp motor that can be de-energized when not needed to save power. Twin Motor cars get their same 78 kWh and 150 kW fast charge battery from last year, but XC40 has 49 km more range and C40 has 51 km more, for a total of 408 and 413 km respectively.

2024 Lexus UX pricing

Lexus has priced the 2024 UX. Its smallest model sees small upgrades for 2024, including new headlights. All UX models are the UX 250h hybrid again this year, delivering 181 hp and an estimated 6.0 L/100 km combined. The 2024 UX starts with the Premium trim for $42,300 and extends through Luxury, F Sport Design, and F Sport Series 1 and Series 2. F Sport Series models get suspension and chassis upgrades like adaptive dampers as well as more sport-oriented cosmetic changes. The F Sport Series 2 tops the range at $51,800. The 2024 UX is at dealers now.

Bronco Trail App

Ford has launched a new off-road app. The Bronco Trail App for iOS and Android will only be available for Bronco owners. It includes 1,200 professionally curated trail maps covering the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Ford promises more trails to come. The app includes the capability to record drives, including waypoints and photos. It also has satellite imagery and topographic maps, as well as recommendations for trails where lowering tire pressures are needed. The app is free, but only for Bronco owners.

New Defender trims

JLR (as Jaguar Land Rover is now known) is adding new grades to the Defender, including adding its supercharged V8 to the 130 model and a new five-seat Defender 130 Outbound. The Defender 130 V8 (they're not calling it a Land Rover anymore) has the same 5.0L supercharged V8 as the shorter models. Well, almost the same. Here it makes 493 hp and 450 lb-ft, instead of 518 hp in the V8 110. It should still turn the Defender into a bit of a rocket ship. The less powerful V8 will also be offered in the Defender 110 SE. Defender 130's new Outbound trim drops the rearmost seats in favour of more cargo space. This one can hold up to 2,516L of gear, around 200L more than the seven-seat D130. More importantly, the load floor is now flat, making it much more useful than the three-row's cargo area. It has other camping-friendly features like rubber mats that can fold down to protect the bumper. D130 V8 pricing starts from $141,550, about $30k more than the I6.

BC increasing EV support for commercial sector

The Province of BC is working to increase electrification in the commercial vehicle sector. Three CleanBC programs are getting new funding to help encourage zero-emissions adoption by those who run medium and heavy-duty EVs. $19.5 million will be spent on 130 new charging stations designed for bigger trucks. Commercial trucks have trouble fitting into conventional EV charge stations designed for passenger vehicles. $30m will be spent on what the province calls "the technology gap." Trying to help develop clean tech for larger vehicles, marine, and aviation. Lastly, Seaspan Ferries has received support to help buy fast charging stations and two large EVs to help move heavy trailers and cargo. The province says that commercial transport is responsible for 60 percent of transportation emissions and 25 percent of total provincial greenhouse gas emissions. The province has now funded 20 projects to help lower emissions in the commercial sector.

Bye Bye Bolt

Chevrolet is dropping the popular Bolt EV after model year 2023, and the Bolt EUV will go along with it. Instead, the Orion Township, Ohio, plant where the vehicles are built will go all-in on the 2024 Silverado EV. A much more expensive (and likely profitable) endeavour for GM. To help replace its entry-level EVs, expect new models this year including the Chevrolet Equinox EV. Based on GM's latest Ultium electric platform, that model is expected to launch in the summer and eventually be priced "around $37,669."

Flo expands to build more charging stations

Canadian charging operator Flo has announced a partnership with the Canada Infrastructure Bank that will bring more than 2,000 public fast-charge stations online by 2027. The $220m loan will double the number of public fast charge stations, Flo says. The project will use Flo's newest 320 kW ultra-fast charger, designed to bring most EVs capable of ultra-fast charging to 80 percent in just 15 minutes. Flo is planning for approximately 400 new sites in communities with populations greater than 20,000 people.

Toyota is almost ready to let us see the 2024 Tacoma pickup, but first, we get at least one more tease. This time it's portable tunes. Toyota will offer a JBL Flex portable speaker with the truck for the campsite and worksite audio. The portable boom box will dock in the truck's dashboard to charge and may be part of the truck's audio system. The removable stereo isn't new (Jeep has already done it) but it is cool. Stay tuned, if you'll pardon Toyota's pun, for more.

More power for EQE

Mercedes-Benz has announced new acceleration upgrades for EQE sedan and SUV and the EQS sedan and SUV models. The upgrade bumps EQE 350 models from 288 hp to 348 hp and cuts a full second from the 0-100 km/h times. The EQS 450 models climb from 355 hp to 435 and get just under a second quicker. The over-the-air update starts from $75 per month on EQE and $115/month on EQS. Or you can get a lifetime subscription to the extra power for $2,500 on EQE and $3,800 on EQS models.

Mercedes-Benz is about to launch a new E-Class. The midsizer has been the heart of the Benz lineup for 70 years, but though the company won't confirm it this is likely the last one to be powered by gas. That makes it both a big deal and a bit of a farewell to a model that is a luxury staple around the world.

Though it might be the last, it really is new. That means longer, with an extra two centimetres between the wheel arches leaving more room for passengers. There is more headroom, too, with Mercedes-Benz pushing up the roof by 5 mm.

There aren't many styling surprises here. From the side it looks much like the other three-box Mercedes-Benz sedans. The nose takes some cues from the electric EQE model, but it is still distinct. At the back, Mercedes-Benz engineers clearly had some fun; just look at those taillights with their super-cool LED interior highlight.

The latest E-Class will be tech-heavy, starting with the new Superscreen. One up over the Hyperscreen just launched in some of the Benz flagships, this whopper has a screen for the driver, the centre, and even the front passenger. Though the driver's screen is separate, and not part of the ensemble.

That front passenger can watch movies or stream other videos. Even conference calls, thanks to the new 5G system. While the driver can watch the screens when the E-Class is stopped, some magic tech blocks the driver's view when the car is moving.

The latest version of the MBUX interface combines what used to be multiple features into one single (more powerful) computer. That gives Benz programmers more flexibility and more capability.

It also lets them link more systems. This E will get active ambient lighting that can let you see the audio you're listening to. The system can now recognize commands without the "Hey, Mercedes" prompt, too.

Then there is the new AI. It can learn about your routines and then respond to them before you even ask. Things like automatically turning on the heated seats at 10 degrees because that's when you use them. Or automatically rolling down the car's window when you get to the same parking pass kiosk every morning. Cool.

Mercedes-Benz will let you add apps to the system, including the controversial TikTok. Benz says if you don't want them you don't have to install them, and that it has confidence in the data security legislation of the EU and other countries where it operates.

Air and adaptive suspension systems will be offered. Rear-wheel steering for agility and stability will also be on the options list. The announcement from Benz didn't get into driver assistance, but the company did say that the E-Class won't get the Level 3 systems of the S-Class.

On paper, the engines sound the same, but Mercedes-Benz says they're new too. The E 350 gets a 2.0L turbo-four that uses the more efficient Miller combustion cycle. It makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft, with the 48V mild hybrid system adding 20 horses and 148 lb-ft.

There will be a 3.0L inline-six, too, badged E 450. That one is also heavily revised from last year and makes 375 hp with 369 lb-ft. The 48V mild-hybrid boost adds the same amount of power.

Will there be an AMG version? The Mercedes-Benz execs we spoke with couldn't confirm. But we were told, "you see me smiling, so maybe that helps." Message received.

Europe gets a plug-in hybrid, but North America won't be. The reason, says Benz, is that there isn't demand. Its own market research says buyers want gas cars or full EVs. If that perception changes, the models are there to bring over.

Expect more about the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class as it gets closer to dealers. The E350 is expected in the fourth quarter of this year with the E450 to follow in Q1 of 2024.

New Elantra N

Hyundai revealed a new Elantra N at Auto Shanghai 2023 last week. The model marks the start of the N performance brand in China, but we're expecting the same looks to show up here. The Elantra N has a new nose with the brand's ultra-thin new front lighting look. The N trademark red stripe is still there. No word on the hardware specs, but don't expect much of a change from the current 276 hp. The 2024 Elantra N should be here before the end of the year.

Heavily refreshed Cayenne

Porsche revealed the 2024 Cayenne last week and while it looks just like the one it replaces there is plenty new underneath. The cabin is almost completely overhauled, getting the large and flat digital screens from the Taycan EV. That includes an available new 10.9-inch one for the front passenger. The air suspension is enhanced and all models come with active dampers with more adjustment for more comfort and handling. There are powertrain enhancements too, including the 348 hp base, the revised 468 hp V8 S, the 650 hp Turbo GT, and a much larger new 25.9 kWh battery for the 468 hp E-Hybrid PHEV.

Lincoln Nautilus

Lincoln revealed an all-new Nautilus. The brand's big two-row crossover will be made in China instead of Oakville, ON, but that might be the smallest of the changes. The Nautilus gets Continental-style hidden door handles and LED light strips nose and tail. Inside, there will be a massive upper screen that spans from door to door for a new digital experience. A conventional center screen lets you control the big screen as well as other usual functions. The 2024 Nautilus will offer a 2.0L turbo-four making 250 hp or the same engine with a hybrid drive system that gives it 310 hp with better fuel economy. To make driving easier, Nautilus will have adaptive suspension as well as the Lincoln BlueCruise hands-off highway assistant. Expect it early next year.

VW Ontario Battery Plant

Volkswagen has announced more details about its planned battery plant for St Thomas, ON. The company's CEO has said it could be the company's largest plant in the world and the $7B investment from VW for building the plant is the single largest Canadian auto investment ever. Though it will come with serious government incentives. VW Group says the plant will employ up to 3,000, with the federal government estimating tens of thousands of spin-off jobs. Groundbreaking is set for next year with production to start in 2027.

Polestar 4 deletes the rear window

Polestar revealed the Polestar 4, its latest EV. The model is a 544 hp electric that the company calls an SUV but is barely taller in height than the Polestar 2 sedan. The unique feature of the 4 is the complete lack of rear window. Instead of glass, you'll need to use a camera to see what's going on behind you. Polestar says this is better for safety, but it could be a tough sell. The model will offer dual-motor AWD or single-motor RWD. A heat pump will be standard. Both versions get a 102 kWh battery and the brand is targeting a range of more than 486 km.

BMW i7 gets more power

BMW has revealed its most powerful EV yet. The i7 is getting an M70 variant that has 650 hp, 811 lb-ft, and an estimated range of up to 474 km. The model uses motors with double the number of windings versus the non-M version. That gives it more output and the ability to sustain that output at speed. There is also new chassis bracing and M suspension upgrades. To go with it, BMW is launching the 750e PHEV as well, which will have 483 hp and double the battery capacity.

Porsche is getting a new driver experience ready to go along with the upcoming new Cayenne SUV. The new layout takes inspiration from classic Porsches, but it also has integrated some lessons learned from the Taycan EV. The two have been combined to make something uniquely Porsche that Porsche says should be better for both driver and passenger.

First up, though, the basic layout. Because this gives us a preview of the rest of the new Cayenne, or at least how deep the changes will go. Everything under the beltline is largely carried over from the current Cayenne. The underside of the dash, centre console shape, and most of the door panel won't be exactly the same, but it will be mostly the same.

This tells us that the next Cayenne will be a refresh, not all-new. Though it doesn't say how extensive styling and powertrain changes might be.

Above that dash line, things are very new. Starting with the 12.6-inch digital dash and extending into the more horizontal emphasis that is meant to make the Cayenne feel wider and more spacious inside.

Like in the Taycan EV, this is a free-standing design with loads of display configuration options. The gear selector moves from the centre console to the dashboard, mounted to the right of the gauge panel.

The dash has seven different available views. Customization includes rev counter, navigation, 3D driving assistant, or even night vision. More simple views are offered, including one that looks more like the classic Porsche five-gauge display.

Thanks to the new dash and moved shifter, Porsche has completely redesigned the centre console as far as controls go. Instead of the great big gear change and a load of switches, most of the console is now smooth.

However, and this is one of the big lessons from the Taycan, the HVAC controls are toggle switches. With a few haptic buttons thrown in, this is a more traditional HVAC experience. Porsche said about the Taycan that "maybe it was so digital that for this generation we learned that we wanted to add a little bit more of analog flavour again."

Porsche's infotainment system runs on a 12.3-inch screen mounted in the centre. This will use Porsche's latest software and includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There are two USB-C ports to connect your phone in the front storage compartment. You can also pair your phone by simply scanning a QR code displayed on the screen.

For the first time in the Cayenne, Porsche is adding a passenger screen. The 10.9-inch screen can let the passenger handle navigation responsibilities. It can also be used to stream video to keep the passenger occupied. Special filters make sure the driver can't watch the video while the passenger can.

Then there's the steering wheel. This is the design from the latest 911, completely new from the last Cayenne. The more modern design has drive mode switches mounted to the wheel as standard. There is also a toggle button to change dash display modes and head-up display controls.

Lastly, the new bits include louver-less air vents and goodies like a cooled 15-watt wireless charge tray.

Porsche Cayenne's New Interior Shows Lessons Learned from Taycan EV

Volkswagen ID.7

The latest electric Volkswagen is a sedan. The Volkswagen ID.7 is an electric sedan larger than the recently dropped Passat that promises an electric range of up to 700 km on the WLTP cycle. Sedans aren't exactly selling well here in North America anymore, but VW plans to bring this one anyway.

Like the company's other EVs like <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/reviews/2022-volkswagen-id-4-review">the ID.4</a> and the upcoming ID. Buzz, the Volkswagen ID.7 uses VW's MEB electric architecture. It's highly flexible and scalable, which is why it can underpin a compact hatchback as well as this 4,960 mm long four-door hatch. That's right, this big sedan is also a hatch.

The MEB platform has been around long enough that VW has developed a new generation of electric powertrain to install in it. This generation is more efficient. With 282 hp from a single motor, it is also VW's most powerful electric motor yet.

All versions of the ID.7 will get that same motor, but there will be different sizes of battery available. Without giving away specific sizes, VW said that the largest would offer up to 700 km of range on the WLTP test cycle. Expect that to translate to between 550 and 600 on the test cycles used here. Like other MEB platform vehicles, charging at up to 200 kW will be possible.

Around 50 mm longer than a Passat, and with the long wheelbase we expect from EVs, the ID.7 should be massive inside. Volkswagen has filled the space with new luxury trimmings the likes of which we haven't seen since the company's Phaeton sedan which left Canada in 2006.

The features include heated and ventilated seats as well as a new available massage function. ID.7 will have a new panoramic sunroof with electrically tinted glass, with the roof and most other functions able to be controlled by voice.

A 15.0-inch centre screen provides infotainment. The company is using it to launch a new interface after buyers were less than impressed with the system launched in the ID.4 and some other recent vee-dubs. While there don't seem to be more buttons, VW has made changes like adding a backlight to the touch sliders, making them easier to see.

The gauge cluster is small, but VW doesn't expect you to use it all that much. That's because there is a new augmented reality head-up display that will show you most of what the dash could along with plenty more.

VW has used the car's size for more than just cabin space. A long sedan makes it easier to optimize the car for the wind tunnel while still having enough space for people and mechanical hardware. To that end, VW says the ID.7 will have a drag coefficient of just 0.23. The car's slipperiness (along with not being a bigger, heavier crossover SUV) plays a big part in that expected long range.

The ID.7 has a healthy dose of high-tech driver assists, too. That includes Travel Assist with Swarm Data, which can handle "lateral and longitudinal control." In other words, it can steer and accelerate to help out with lane changes on high-speed highways. It also has the ability to record your last 50m of parking maneuvers and undo your parking job by itself.

Volkswagen says the ID.7 is the third of its planned 10 new EVs by 2026. It comes after the refreshed ID.3 and the long wheelbase <a href="https://www.wheels.ca/news/volkswagen-reveals-2024-id-buzz-electric-van">ID. Buzz</a>. The car will launch in Europe and China this fall and is expected here sometime in 2024.
