Kia recalls 35,000 vehicles in U.S.

Kia is recalling about 35,000 cars in the U.S. to fix wiring and prevent fires and the company is reviewing the possibility of a similar move in Canada.

Kia Canada spokesperson Jack Sulymka said Thursday that the company is awaiting a report to determine whether the company will recall some Soul and Sorento models.

“The report will determine if immediate action is required here,” he said.

In the U.S., Kia is sending notices to owners of 24,000 Kia Soul compact wagons from the 2010 model year and 11,000 Sorento sedans from the 2011 model year to repair wiring in the interior wiring panels that could lead to fires.

Sulymka noted Kia is unaware of any cases or issues involving possible wiring defects in Canada.

Kia told the U.S. government that some wiring harnesses located in the Soul’s front door trim panels and the Sorento’s front and rear door trim panels may have been improperly soldered, which could lead to an electrical short.

Kia said the short in the wiring harnesses could cause fires but no accidents or injuries have been reported south of the border.

Owners will be notified later this month and the wiring harnesses will be replaced.
