Mercedes-Benz ML320 BlueTec
BEST: Mercedes-Benz ML320 BlueTec
This five-seater, starting at $58,000, strikes a fine balance of comfort, utility, on-road dynamics and off-road ability, all underscored by a terrific 3.0 L turbodiesel V6 that generates 210 hp and a stump pulling 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
It seems we auto writers have been singing the praises of the modern diesel for a while now, and yet with this Merc, I was still fielding the same old questions. Is it slow? Is it noisy? Does it stink? Let's try this again. No. No. And No.
Like BMW and Audi, Mercedes-Benz injects liquid urea (AdBlue) into the exhaust stream to clean up nitrogen-oxide emissions. The mixture passes through a catalytic converter that neutralizes the NOx, reducing it to nitrogen and water vapour. This, in combination with optimized combustion process and a particulate filter, allows the ML320 BlueTEC to meets Bin 5 Tier II emission regulations.
On the road, the ML320 BlueTec is a satisfying drive. It has a supple ride yet maintains decent body control in the bends. Sightlines are good, and on the highway the torquey and low-revving diesel is your friend. This Merc is a finely balanced all-rounder.
Over a week of mixed city and highway driving, I saw 10.8 L/100 km (26 m.p.g.). Not bad for a 2,255 kg luxury-ute that'll scamper to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds.
NEXT BEST: Buick Enclave CXL AWD
I'm a fan of the Lambda platform GM full-sized SUVs that include the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, and this, the flagship seven-seat Buick Enclave that in top-line CXL AWD trim starts at $53,145. Tack on navigation with rear-seat DVD and you're over the $60,000 threshold. The Enclave, powered by a direct-injection 288 hp 3.6 L V6 coupled to a six-speed auto, is refined and shows commendable on-road dynamics.

Acura MDX Elite ($64,395): Athletic full-sized SUV with seven-seat capability.
BMW X5 xDrive35d ($62,200): Another potent argument for diesel power.
