BEST: Mazda MX-5

There are faster, more powerful cars than the $28,995 Mazda MX-5, and there are cars that offer greater luxury, but there are few cars that get it all so right.

Mazda has been making the MX-5 — a.k.a. Miata — since 1989. That first generation car demonstrated what could be if you took the verve and visceral feel of a classic British roadster, and replaced its quirky electrics, dubious fit and finish, and mechanical inconsistency with well-engineered quality equivalents. It worked; the MX-5/Miata went on to become the best-selling two-seat convertible in history.

Each subsequent generation has simply refined the formula. Clever design now blesses the MX-5 with a real trunk, supplemented by the well for the top (behind the seats) when the top is up.

In keeping with its simple personality, the MX-5 uses the smaller, 2.0 litre version of Mazda's "MZR" four-cylinder engine family, producing just 167hp (automatics are rated 158hp). Drive to the rear wheels is through a five or six-speed manual, or a six-speed automatic transmission.

What seems like a lack of power is actually a great excuse to delight in the joys of working – really, truly driving – this car. The suspension and steering are wonderfully balanced, the handling predictable and confidence-inspiring.

NEXT BEST: BMW 3-series Cabriolet

Top-down motoring need not be Spartan, nor need it be solely for two. The BMW 328i (230hp) and 335i (300hp) Cabriolets offer the coupe-like benefits of a folding metal hardtop, the open air experience of a convertible, and the well-sorted driving experience that defines modern Bimmers.

Four seats means that you can share the fun (though pre-adolescents fit best in back), or at least bring more than just a pair of overnight bags on your scenic road trip.

These are driver's cars, from $55,600, but you don't need to be an enthusiast to appreciate them, since the 3 Series is just as capable of plodding along comfortably in traffic, and there are plenty of comfort and convenience items.
