Big Time for change
This world does not survive on the auto industry alone. You may not be the lowest paid earner out there, however far from the highest paid as well. So suck it up and get on with it.

I am not optomistic
My husband has been laid off from Crysler for 2 years now and I would dearly love him to be called back. However, I do not feel public funding will solve the problems of the big 3. Their troubles are systemic in nature ranging from management, unions, legacy payouts and severely restrictive cash flow. Perhaps the biggest hurdle they face is public perception of the product. Ironically build quality is not an issue; the big three all produce an excellent product today. Independent testing by companies like JD Power and associates rate their vehicles right up there with the Japanese. Instead a reversal of corporate culture, labour relations and a complete turn around of public perception is what is needed. This is a whole bigger pie to swallow and it is not going to be solved by us throwing good money after bad.

GM doesn't deserve our tax dollars
GM workers make double what Honda and Toyota's do. That's why the cars cost about the same but the quality differs. The government should use the billions of dollars to build brand new state of the art factories to build quality vehicles. No unions should be allowed and starting pay should be $20.00 an hour with a max of up to $40.00 Let's face it, it's not rocket science working in a factory but they pay as if it is.

Survival for who?
Yes, auto-workers make good money. Yes, they get great benefits. But this is just all relative... relative to what the auto-worker has seen in past years. People feel/perceive auto-workers as fat-cats only because they've never had a strong union representing them, protecting their rights and fighting for their best interest. That's exactly what the government is trying to do with the rest of the country. The government will not let the auto-sector die because the livelyhood of hundreds of thousands depend on it directly or indirectly. Not to mention the amount of tax payer's money that it would take to sustain the sort of welfare rendered by the big three failing.

Enough Already
I'm sick and tired of hearing those of you out there who think Autoworkers should be busted down to the ranks of a McDonalds part time employee. No offense to them. You simpletons just don't get it. The problems the car companies are having is the result of the Perfect Storm.Even your precious Asian companies are suffering. Once they are done with autoworkers who do you think they will go after next? Once they are done beating up that group what do you think they will do to the mininum wage folks or those who are considered the working poor? By the way for those of you who treasure your superior offshore built vehicle, when you lose your job think about the nice Korean or Chinese fella who's still got one and don't be bitter when you're hanging out with your unemployed neighbour who used to have some type of decent job provided by the North American auto industry. You will have got your wish.

Much too late
As the world looms in an economic crisis, or downspin, the automotive sector believes, somehow that they are above the the rest of the world out there. Hmmm, at taxpayers expense. Its not likely that, its is fair to anyone. Its plain and simple, its not going to solve anything at all, when it comes to people buying cars. Sorry, the automotive industry as we know it has to change. It was not consumer demand that put the auto sector where it is. It was Greed/Why so many different kinds. It made a wrong choice by getting rid of the big 3 sub cats and bringing them ie Merc, Pont, and Dodge. The industry made the wrong choice there. So its high time to get out of dodge as they have done it to themselves. Overpaid, now maybe they will get a real job.

Yes, let's applaud while workers lose again
Even an in-depth, 8 sentence article like this one provides us with important information. These concessions are happening so GM can qualify for government money. This isn't management vs. labour. This is GOVERNMENT engaged in union busting. The economic crisis is being exploited for political advantage. If that fills your jealous, resentment-fueled, wage-slave soul with glee at the downfall of the overpaid union pigs, just remember that when the last union goes down, they will come for YOU next. If you think you make peanuts now, just wait...

What is the relevance of this deal?
The union said it was helping GM to qualify for government loans. Loans that are financed by tax payer's money. Can the union help GM so it does not take any tax payer's money at all? I don't see a viable restructuring plan in place that will ensure the long term survival of the company without aid. Only tiny steps towards getting the next government bailout. Money that will have to be sucked out of tax payers eventually in the future. So, taxpayers have been committed to pay down debts in the future. Has GM and its union any committed plans to make the company viable in the future?

Would love to have been there!
I would have paid for a ticket to see GM bend over the union like that.

so after all of the publicized media posturing is over...
Why a story that doesn't provide details on the deal?

Too Late The Hero...
A case of way too little way too late. GM is doomed and the CAW can take their fare share of the blame. Too many years of holding GM hostage at the bargaining table eventually would play against both parties. In the end they both deserve each other. Greed and ignorance are the ultimate winners!
