Fuel economy ratings are good for one thing and one thing only - relative comparisons between models. If you see one model at 7L/100 and another at 8L/100 you know you're going to face approximately 10% higher/lower fuel bills accordingly. Taken with a grain of salt they are helpful, if not overly meaningful. I too, however, would love to see fuel economy ratings done in real world scenarios with a typical 50-100lbs of cargo in the trunk and a 200lb+ passenger load.

That being said, Nissan is getting their stuff together lately with their new model releases. They've got great technology that comes largely from their premium Infiniti brand so in the next couple years when we also see the Versa Hatchback and Rogue models re-vamped (and shortly I'm presuming the Maxima will get an overhaul), combined with the already re-designed Versa Sedan, Altima Sedan (coupe to follow), Pathfinder CUV and now the Sentra they're going to start making serious waves in the market. My suggestion - wait for the second model years of each of these respective vehicles to get the glitches fixed and the few extra odds and ends they're sure to throw in next go'round.

Fuel economy ratings are an absolute joke and have been for years. They bear no resemblance at all to real world driving. It's time government revised the way this is done to reflect real world conditions. As it is, done in a lab with NO independent verification, these ratings are useless.

I remember looking at used cars several times a few years back and if memory served me right the Nissan Sentra came up frequently as a good used car buy.

Well the so called new Sentra has been out in Asia for the past two years. It has already made Taxi cab status, which speaks well for its reliability, but it isn't going to win against the dull Civic, or corporate slug Corolla.
