Honda's Alliston plant to cut production

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Honda's production cuts will include a two-month slowdown at its second plant in Alliston, Ont., but the carmaker says no workers will be affected.

Honda Canada spokesman Richard Jacobs says the plant will eliminate the second shift at the plant until the end of March, but workers will be redeployed to Honda's other assembly plant or its new engine plant, both in Alliston.

The slowdown will reduce production by 9,000 units, and will include non-production Fridays in February, during which workers can engage in paid training or maintenance.

Jacobs says Honda Canada may make "additional adjustments" at the end of March, depending on demand.

The Japan-based automaker said Monday it is cutting production in Japan and North America by an additional 50,000 vehicles amid a severe slump in global sales.

Both of Honda's plants in Alliston produce the popular Civic sedan.
