Or maybe it was the massive financial crisis in 2007, and economic uncertainty since? Borrowing money to replace a working car doesn't make sense if you're not sure you'll still be working in 6 months.

Don't know if cars are any more reliable than they were in the past (my gut says no), but I think it's not really the main factor here.

Yet another inferior story (looks like an industry press release) in the Wheels section, lacking even basic detail that a reader is longing to read. For example, cars are manufactured now to increased durability standards—there is no doubt of that. I've been buying cars for over 40 years and it's clear they now last longer. But the article fails to mention even one example of the reasons for greater durability. Is it the sheet metal, is it superior and stronger parts. . . what are the contributing factors?

We keep our cars for as long as possible, under good maintenace 8 - 12 yrs is very posssible....we had great success with our vehicles until we bought our 2003 Ford Focus station wagon,,,,,it is well maintaned, runs wonderful, interior in great shape, reasonable kms,,,,but a rust bucket otherwise,,,,Ford doesn't want to owe up to the fact that the Focus station wagons from around that period were made of inferior metal, Ford's executive office suggest I trade it in when a 'trade your heap' special is being offered.....Ford calls it 'a heap',,,,hmmm,,,,

Buying a new or used car involves paying taxes - doesn't matter that taxes are paid over and over again on the same vehicle. Dealers offer a break, cutting the taxable amount by their estimate of the trade-in (which is always much less than true value). For this reason, I keep a car for at least a decade, otherwise I'd like to help churn the economy and buy a used vehicle more often. Ontario's poorly made license plates are still an annoying extra cost to replace. My oldest car - a Toyota - will finally escape Drive Clean this year.

Good point Frvous. But something the gwnius DesRosiers forgot, that's the overdrive transmission. Cuts down on the RPM an engine is turning at a given speed. Less RPM, less wear & tear.

Are cars really lasting longer or are new cars just beyond the reach of today's wages?
