DETROIT: Wondering why SUVs get all the glory, Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota introduced a new version of the company’s flagship Camry vehicle which he called “the best representation we could have for Toyota.”
At the North America International Auto Show in Detroit where the car was shown to a standing-room only crowd, he said Toyota wanted to show drivers you could produce a car that is “practical” but one his company could still be “passionate,” about.
While the Camry has been the best-selling car in the United States for the last 15 years, it has been the best-selling car in its segment in Canada for the past two years.
“The 2018 Toyota Camry is all-new, with jaw-dropping design, advanced safety systems, and impressive technology – plus stirring performance that makes this mid-size sedan incredibly fun to drive,” said Cyril Dimitris, vice president, Toyota Canada Inc.
“It’s the best mid-size sedan we’ve yet produced – one that will deliver everything Canadians have come to expect from Camry, and a whole lot more.”
That whole lot more starts from the ground up. Toyota says the new Camry has a sleeker profile than the current model.
The car has been lowered one inch in the front and 1.2 inches in the rear, which reduced the car’s overall height by one inch without sacrificing any interior space. Along with a longer wheelbase, two inches longer than the 2017 model, the changes allow a lower centre of gravity that gives the new Camry better handling.
Toyoda said Camry will be available in five grades: L, LE, XLE, SE and XSE. The new Camry’s “Sport” SE and XSE grades wear a noticeably different body style than the entry level L, LE and premium XLE grades, highlighted by a sculpted rocker panel, new 19-inch black machined-finish alloy wheels (XSE only) a subtle rear spoiler lip, aggressive front bumper, and rear bumper with an integrated lower diffuser.
Or as Toyoda put in during the Monday press conference in Detroit, the Camry comes in two models, “sexy and really sexy.”
Akio also announced the new Camry features the Toyota New Global Architecture, TNGA, which is a structural reform movement for the company which will allow it to produce cars that are more dynamic, athletic and fun to drive. The TNGA allows the driver to sit more towards the centre of the car and lowers the hood and dashboard line so the driver can see more in front of the car.
Three new powertrains will be available on the new 2018 Camry: They include a new 3.5-litre V6 with D-4S Fuel Injection and an all-new 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder gasoline engine, which comes paired to a new eight-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission (8AT), and a next-generation Toyota Hybrid System.
On the safety side, all Camry’s come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P which includes pre-collision warning, pedestrian detection and lane departure alert.
All Camry’s also come equipped with a standard backup camera.
