Our standards are a joke, Euro-NCAP is considerably stricter, yet it's a criminal offence to bring a vehicle that is not built for the North American market into Canada. I suspect this concept is nothing else but hidden protectionism for the big 2.5 whose vehicles are as unsafe as it gets, with support from the insurance industry. The hope that this will change is though slim as Harpo&Co rather have mediocre vehicles slapped together in Windsor and Oshawa than having people have the freedom to have a real selection of vehicles.

"Do we really need different standards? Isn’t a tree a tree everywhere in the world?" You are asking the wrong question. What you should look at (as a journalist) is whether our standards are higher or lower than that of the Japanese and why.

Some Canadian standards were implemented before the American ones. For example, daylight driving lights are a Canadian requirements. So is a speedometer/odometer in kilometers. The wearing of a seat belt is enforced in different ways in the US and in Canada.

I had a 2002 Suzuki Esteem wagon for 10 years. I got 400-500km per tank of gas (35-40L). It's very reliable and cheap to operate. I wish the big names like Toyota and Honda can come up with a practical wagon like they used to have instead of trying to sell me an SUV.
Sorry and sad to say good buy to good and affordable Suzukis when their Canadian arms fold in the near future.

I had a 1990Pontiac Firefly and still have a 2002 Chev Tracker that I bought new in 2002. Love the Tracker -no rust - 4 cyl, auto, 4 dr, 4X4 with AC; but I really miss that Firefly -great amazing little car -FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW, THEY ARE BOTH REBAGED SUZUKI'S. Will someday probably buy a used SX4 AWD!

"Suzuki is world leader in small, fuel-efficient cars," Their cars might be small, but they are gas guzzlers ranking probably last or near last in their segments for fuel efficiency.

I would have bought a SX4 hatchback if they had more legroom. Great car. Solid build and nice to drive and always a good value. Not for long legged people though. Very uncomfortable.
