Porsche’s hybrid plug-in is a tastePublished April 4, 2013
If you’re holding your breath for the unveiling of Porsche’s monster hybrid, the 910 Spyder plug-in supercar, we don’t blame you. But you’re going to be holding it for another five months, so in the meantime, Porsche is offering a taste of all-electric style in its Panamera SE-Hybrid.
Based on the tweaked 2014 Panamera sedan, the S E-Hybrid adds oomph with more juice, more power and more driving range: the Hybrid can handle more than 30 kilometres on electric power alone thanks to a 9.4kWh lithium-ion pack (an improvement over the earlier nickel-metal hydride battery pack). It keeps the 3.0-litre V6 from the previous Panamera Hybrid but has a redesigned electric motor that boasts 416 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of torque in total.
The S E-Hybrid can go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds (that’s faster than a Boxster) and hit a top speed of 167 mph. Its electric boost mode provides an electrical-assist giddyup when you hit the gas, and a coasting setting shuts off the engine and diverts to electric power when you want to cruise.
“[The S E-Hybrid] provides another opportunity for our customers to experience all-electric driving with Porsche attributes,” Nick Twork, spokesman for Porsche U.S., told Wired magazine.
The price? $99,000 when the Panamera S E-Hybrid goes on sale later this year. Okay, you can breathe now.
