Parrot drives a buggy

Published December 12, 2012

From the weird pets file comes this video of Pepper the screaming parrot, who would only stop squawking when he was near his owner Andrew Gray. Rather than strangle the noisy bird, Gray used his skills as a computer engineering grad student to create the BirdBuggy, which allows Pepper to drive wherever he pleases.

The buggy turns left and right and has forward and reverse, all controlled by a toggle switch. To protect Pepper from braining himself in a collision, the BirdBuggy has an infrared collision avoidance system that includes bump sensors. The smart buggy can even find its way back to its charging station when the juice gets low. A special platform behind Pepper’s perch is just the right size to hold the daily paper to prevent Pepper from leaving a mess all over the house.
