In response to the stop sign/light-roundabout spiel… the reason we do not want them is Ontario drivers do not even know how to stop at a stop sign or stop light, & you want us to start letting everyone yield to flow?! LOL! Next you’re going to suggest we raise the speed limit to 120kph because everyone’s proven expert on how to drive safely at 100kph, in the right lane yes? Child please. You can’t have your dessert until you eat your greens & stop at your reds.

Please have Norris’s comments reviewed by Jim Kenzie and other driving experts, if you can. I vehemently disagree with his assertion that winter tires are unnecessary in Toronto, as snow is not the only problem – it is ice ! Winter tires have a softer rubber compound which performs better on ice and wears rapidly qt higher temperatures, so you have to change them. Also please alert your readers when this jerk is on the road with his ‘no season/ tires.

To the editors at the Star, this video is poor journalism ! Consult the experts, consult Quebec where winter tires are the law; is there a corresponding reduction in accidents?

Given that everyone is so environmentally conscious today and we tend to worry about everything but the things that are really getting us. Have you ever wondered how much fuel is wasted and CO2 is produced by the simple act of stopping at a RED light ? While I don’t have the exact number, I do know that one stop can completely ruin the average fuel economy on my Drivers Information Center ( DIC ). The act of braking, idling for 2 minutes and then re-accelerating uses as much energy as driving a couple of kilometers at steady state cruise. So given that this is such an environmentally bad thing, why do municipalities go out of their way to nail us with STOP signs and lights at every opportunity. Lights are so badly timed that we go from one RED to another without ever making any lights at all on some streets. I wish we had a study for this… of course some will argue that the electric car in hybrid or pure form is the solution due to regenerative braking and lack of pollution while idling… but they still must re-accelerate… and what happens when “everyone” plugs in at night… suddenly night will become a peak time and our smart meters will nail us yet again.
What I am proposing are some small incremental first steps….

What we need are SMART traffic lights that don’t do stupid things, like stop 50 cars for no good reason when there is NO other vehicle at the crossing intersection.

In the UK, where they are much more enlightened, they use Roundabouts which are far more efficient.

I bet we can reduce our CO2 emissions by automobile in half with this small effort…. And since we are in a recession and need to make infrastructure changes anyways, why not invest in stuff like thins !

Pass it on… maybe everyone will be enlightened….

I thought pimpmobiles were a thing of the past! That thing is so far beyond ugly it is close to criminal what has been done to it! The foks in Oshawa should be up in arms!
