Insider Report: Ducks, porn stars, cars, what more could you ask?

Portland police officer stops to grant duck family safe passage
Sometimes being a good human means doing more than just focusing on doing a good job. For many cops, being a good cop also means being a good human. Some, however, go just that extra little bit to be special. Portland traffic officer Mark James set out in pursuit of a speeding driver, when a mama duck and her chicks waddled out into the middle of the road. James could have just sped on and left the feathered family to their own devices (and likely certain death) but instead he let the speeder go and stopped to ensure the family made it off the road. This guy is a good cop.

Former porn star Sasha Grey breaks Russian drift car
I guess you could file this one in the “Why?” drawer. Russian automotive website Drom.ru brought former adult film actress Sasha Grey to the former Soviet Union for her first ever visit to the country. The site’s blog shows Grey on the scene of a cooking show and a defensive driving course. They also put her behind the wheel of a Lada Kalina, which she was expected to drift. It sounds more like she blew up the engine.

I have heard that Grey is attempting to break into more mainstream types of acting. I’m assuming that this is some sort of promo trip to fund that, although I can’t see what any of this has to do with acting.

Local lapping with the gang from Eccentric
There are so many groups here in Southern Ontario that operate affordable and fun lapping days that there just isn’t any excuse for street racing. The folks at Eccentric track days are a great example. These guys and girls get out on the track at Toronto Motorsports Park, near Hamilton, and put all sorts of cars to the test. The old airbase track has a great flow and speeds are low enough that it’s next to impossible to damage onesself. Best of all, Eccentric then puts together a video of the action each time.

Thinking of street racing? Take it to the track instead!

Get the scoop on a not so secret GM sport compact from R&T and Drive
At the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, General Motors trotted out a couple of sporty concept cars and asked visitors for their opinion. One looked like someone’s interpretation of a Mitsubishi Eclipse and was positioned as a front wheel drive machine. The other one, named the Code 130R, looked like a cross between a Camaro and a BMW 1 Series. This one was said to be a rear wheel drive platform. Shortly after the show, GM types stopped talking about them altogether.

There are rumblings in the wind that one of these cars is actually in development on some level and that it may well be the red one you see above. That’s the car that was on the show floor in Detroit. My good friends Alex Nunez from Road & Track and Mike Spinelli from Drive sat down to talk about whether these stories hold any weight. Nunez has some interesting insight that says the car just might come to us via the Australian market. Either way, I would LOVE to see this car on our streets! Not sure if Chevelle would be the right nameplate though.

Vaughan Gittin Jr. Ain’t Care
The grammar police are going to love that title. The latest release from the team at Hoonigan shows drift star Vaughan Gittin Jr. grabbing a bit of air off the front of Swedish drifter Fredric Aasbø’s car when the Swede messed up. The Monster Energy Mustang just keeps right on drifting!
