Insider Report: Postcards from the edge of adventure

Mazda Adventure rally photo gallery
For the past 3 days, Wheels contributor Peter Bleakney and I have been in Colorado and Utah for the first ever Mazda Adventure Rally. Yesterday I shared a quick video of the first day’s roads as we drove a Mazda CX-5 across the Ophir Pass. As spectacular as that road was, things only got better for day 2 as we headed into the Moab area of Utah.

Our travels took us to the bottom of deep, rocky roads, canyons and across unbelievable mountain passes with breathtaking views all around. There were also some heart stopping trails, with 3,000′ drop offs with no guardrails to keep us from plummeting to our deaths.

It was funny to see the looks on drivers of hardcore Jeeps on the trail as we easily passed them in our CUVs. The Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 proved to be beyond adept at scrambling up rocky trails.

I will have lots of video and photos to share next week, but for now I hope you enjoy this gallery of images from the event.

Oh, and you’ll have to wait to see our stories in print to learn how we fared in the competition.
