I lost an agreed $50,000 purchase of a glider and trailer. The trailer VIN was not enough digits and even though I had a manufacturer giving the full VIN, RIV took TWO WEEKS to tell me it was acceptable under their policies, even though they promise to answer back within "three business days".

Note that even though that is a standard policy, it is nowhere to be found on the RIV website. Also note that RIV will only advise by phone; so, they can dodge anything they say.

If this family can afford to have a vehicle like this custom built surely they could have found some legal expertise (a lawyer) who could have looked into what regulations apply and ensure they met all of them. Seems like a passenger van would have worked just fine for them and would have been a lot easier to import.

Transport Canada's import rules are designed to promote protectionism for local car manufacturers and importers. It's impossible to import a European car into Canada because it hasn't been made for the Canadian market and is therefore "unsafe". I'd rather crash in a European car than in a US box. Even cars that are identical, made in the same factory, can't be brought in, which is absolutely ridiculous. Just to clarify, I agree that not any soapbox on 4 wheels should be let in, but there is no reason whatsoever to prohibit import of an identical vehicle. Any lawyer up for a pro bono case under WTO to strike this ridiculous stuff down?

A little bit of due diligence on the family's part would have saved them this hassle. The Government of Canada website has mountains of information on importing vehicles into Canada including custom-alterations like this one. I know as we are looking to import a car ourselves.
Custom conversions must be certified to meet Canadian safety standards prior to importation (as do all US vehicles). The process is not difficult or costly, just time-consuming.

In regards to the "motorcyclist, lucky to be alive" Indeed she is lucky to be alive. Unfortunately she was totally at fault. Her lane positioning was totally wrong before she made the turn and she rode right into the wrong lane. When you are making a left you go from your lane to the left lane, then to the right lane. Lastly she was way too slow on the throttle after she had made the turn. Taking a safety course would be a good idea for a start.

Yes, it is a new vehicle so it needs to be imported. It only takes 3 days to import a vehicle. As long as it is registered in the US, recall repairs have been made and meets CDN safety rules for passenger vehicles. But, all of this needs pre-approved before you show up at the border.
