transportation, future technology and vehicle concept - man using car control panel
One of my favourite toy cars as a kid was my Corgi version of the mighty 1972 L & M Porsche 917/10.? I remember seeing the monsters racing at Mosport (Sorry, CTMP) that year and was blown away by the wild looking Porsches. The car above is chassis number 003, which was typically driven by George Follmer. At the ’72 Can-Am at Mosport, Mark Donohue finished second to Denny Hulme’s McLaren in chassis #011.
In a recent auction, a 917/10 without a race history sold for a rather substantial $4.4 million. #003 is the very car that George Follmer drove to win the ’72 Can-Am Championship, so it goes without saying that Mecum Auctions is expecting the car to claim a new all time auction record when it crosses the block in August at Monterey.
If you have never hear a 917, check out this video from the 2011 Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca as the team prepared #003 for Follmer to pace the 917 race.
