After four transmissions in 125,000 km on her ’05 Forester that she bought new, my significant other, Cherie traded it on a Mazda3 Skyactiv this summer and loves it. Great fuel economy, solid and it’s fun to drive.

The heated seats are fine but she’s already finding the hard plastic steering wheel cold and unforgiving. I’d like to get her a leather-wrapped steering wheel, preferably heated. The only reference I can find is a company called B & I who will rework your wheel for $300. bitrim.com

But, since you have to ship your steering wheel to them, rendering the car undriveable, I’ll likely just spring for a leather steering wheel cover for $25.

While I was on my fall motorcycle tour this year, I dropped in on Whitehorse Accessories in North Conway, New Hampshire. I picked up an electric vest that’s thin enough to fit under a riding jacket, has four heat levels and, get this, is powered by a rechargeable battery.

I bought an end-of-the-line model that was just over $100 but worth its weight in gold. On “low,” the battery lasts for about five hours and I can also wear it under my fishing and hunting clothing, on winter hikes or while driving a convertible in cooler weather. whitehorsegear.com

For those rides on cold mornings where that little gap on your neck between your helmet and jacket collar seems to be flash frozen, there are several thin, balaclavas that extend down far enough to keep your throat warm. Bike shops have them, as do snowmobile and ski shops, for $15 to $50. Just make sure your helmet still fits properly and remove them before entering any convenience stores.

My youngest daughter, Jamie, announced that I’m going to be a grandpa for the first time next March — which means hockey gear, fishing rods and, especially, motorcycle clothing for our future Moto GP Champion.

GP Bikes in Whitby stocks a complete line of Ducati brand infant clothing. Ducati baby booties, $11, Born to be a Ducatista t-shirt, $40, and a Pasta Bib, $15.

Having a future grandson to spoil: priceless!
