Two young men in their late teens or early twenties ended up in Mission Bay in San Diego in the driver’s BMW at about 7:30 Saturday morning.
The driver said he swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel.
“It’s a nice BMW, but it’s going to be totalled; it’s a shame,” San Diego Lifeguards’ Chris Ingalls told CBS 8 News.
Carbuzz reports that the young men weren’t “under the influence of anything other than compassion for wildlife.”
Nevertheless, their story is being met with a certain amount of skepticism.
Fiesta Island, where the incident took place, has few roads with very low speed limits next to wide beaches.
So it’s difficult to imagine a squirrel being the only reason this Bimmer driver ended up window-deep in muck and water.
However, there is no immediate proof that anything other than an errant rodent caused the calamitous swerve.
What is known for certain is that the car is ruined, the two young men are fine — and the squirrel could not be reached for comment.
