The black box info will help in the future to nail distracted drivers. The Poilice will know the time of the accident from the black box and also the time the "Dumb Driver" was on his "Smart Phone". Eventully this will become like "alcohol related" accidents. A guy in Hamilton knows a person who was "T-boned", by a young girl chatting on her cell. The Police used the blackbox and her phone info ,to nail her specificly, for "at fault while distracted" Hopefully one day this will be very serious/criminal offence. After all they "distracted drivers" kill nearly twice the people "drunks" do!

Driving is not a God given right, it is a privilege. A previous poster appears to recommend lying and hiding the truth if you have acted illegally or unsafely.

We accept that we are required to demonstrate at least a minimal level of competence to be granted a license to drive. It's not so unreasonable that we be held to acting within the law while doing so.

I don't mind having the car's black box to back up my story if I get into trouble. But then again I don't download pirated movies of software so I guess I like being honest. Does that put me in the minority?

It's only going to get worse. Your smartphone is already a spying tool for companies/GOV. Your PC has been for more than 10 years. Cameras everywhere, satellites take pictures every day. They can tell you if a quarter on the ground is heads / tails......

I for one welcome the data collection. If someone crashed into me, I'd like to know as much as possible about the reason. Similarly, if I was involved in a crash, I'd like to know if it was my fault or there was a mechanical malfunction.

GM call their units 'EDR's <event data recorder) and in one of my models it is located under the central console between the seats and screwed into the floor pan slightly covered by the carpet. It is hard to get to on purpose for removal but it is easy to located the serial port like connection that GM tech's can use the Bosch crash data retrieval tool in order to download the last 10 to 15 seconds of data preceding the deployment of the airbags. I could tell you how to disable it but I won't. I will suggest that if you are involved in a serious accident where charges are possible and where your vehicle will possibly be 'written off' you may wish to have your vehicle transported to your home instead of a garage or body shop. As soon as you consent to the insurance write off - the insurance company OWN your car and they WILL allow the data to be retrieved by the police - warrant free. The same applies to Leasing and financial institutions who have liens against your vehicle because you have a car loan. Guess what comes back to haunt you during court appearances...

One of the reasons I won't be buying a new(er) vehicle. Aside from their complexity, life is crowded enough without your car spying on you. We are not fast or erratic drivers, just want our freedoms left alone
