Amazon launches online auto parts sales

Amazon takes on Canadian retailers with digital storefront

Published October 31, 2013

Amazon, the online retail giant that built its business selling books and entertainment, will now deliver auto parts to Canadians’ doorsteps.

The company is expanding into the automotive market — a move that directly competes with Canada’s biggest automotive parts supply stores.

The Amazon.ca Auto store  features automotive items for cars, trucks, RVs and motorcycles from brands such as Camco, Curt, OTC, Schumacher and Battery Tender. Items on offer include car care products, jump starters, seat covers, windshield wiper blades and automotive tools and equipment.

The move is sure to push Canadian Tire and other car parts retailers to explore similar options.

Amazon (Nasdaq:AMZN) says most of the items can be shipped for free using its two-day subscription service Amazon Prime.

The company has also opened a section of its website that sells grocery products.

“We’re working to deliver an unmatched selection of everyday essentials and must-have products,” said Amazon.ca country manager Alexandre Gagnon in a release.

Amazon.ca has more than doubled the product categories available to customers in Canada in 2013, most recently adding the Grocery and Auto stores, as well as the Office and Toys online stores.
