Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge:Published April 8, 2013
Raging winds, severe sandstorms, bogging down in “mountains” that shift beneath your wheels: welcome to the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, where you will never encounter a rain-slicked road or black ice, but you may be coughing up sand for weeks afterwards.
Formerly known as the UAE Desert Challenge, the prestigious international cross-country rally for cars, trucks and motorcycles — the current leader, Spanish driver Nani Roma is sluicing through the dunes in a Mini — is staged across the Abu Dhabi emirate, with most of the routes running through its majestic desert areas. It was originally the last round of both the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup and the FIM Cross Country Rallies World Championship, but is now the season-opening round.
During the Challenge, competitors face two days of documentation and scrutinizing on Friday or Saturday before the Super Special Stage on Sunday, which decides the starting order for five days of racing the Liwa Desert and the Moreeb area of the Empty Quarter. This year, Sunday’s Super Special was choked out by a vicious sandstorm, forcing motorcycles to sit out the event.
