PARIS: Volkswagen is calling its I.D. Concept the “countdown to a new era.”

Revealed today (Sept. 29) at the Paris Motor Show, the I.D. is an electric car with a projected range of 400-600 km on a single charge.

VW said the I.D. is the first of an entire range of electric vehicles with the I.D. launching in 2020 along with the new Golf.

VW also plans an autonomous version by 2025.

In autonomous mode, the multifunction steering wheel retracts into the instrument panel giving the passenger compartment a “special experience”.

One interesting function is the I.D. will be able to independently pickup parcels if the owner isn’t at home.

It will be based on VW’s new Modular Electric Drive (MEB) chassis that will be platform upon which the next generation of electric cars will be based.

It will be powered by a 125 kW electric motor.

At Paris, Volkswagen announced it plans to sell one million electric cars a year by 2025.
